Staying on target.....

Hey everyone,

Been a while since I checked in here but I thought it was time to get a blog going again. Finally got a solid gaming group and that means I'm painting like a madman and inspiration is everywhere!

This blog is mainly going to be about my return to 40k. I fell out of it a year or so ago and just couldn't get back into it as well as other games largely taking over my time such Bolt Action and X-Wing. However, after watching some fantastic battle reports on Youtube, I realized just how much I missed playing my childhood tabletop love and decided I needed to get back to it. After much thought, I decided to go outside the box and play something you don't see everyday - Chaos Renegades. Having always loved some of the models produced by Forgeworld this seemed the perfect opportunity to own some.

So, to start off with, I got myself this bad boy!

And what a book it is! Complete with the renegades list it also has every chaos vehicle you could want in it, well worth the money in my opinion! If anyone wants any info on the book, please ask away as I wish there was more about it on the interwebs.

I now had a rough idea of what I wanted to use for my force but there was a little problem - while I wanted to put money into this, I needed to upgrade Cadians into the renegades to make up my platoons which as I am sure some of you are aware is........ costly to say the least. Fortunately, I stumbled across a page on 1d4chan that explained all about the renegades book and ideas and thoughts on it. It contained an absolute gem of an idea: use chaos cultists with autoguns as renegades. Bingo! So I swiftly began to buy up as many autogun squads of cultists as I could! So far I have the following built:

This makes a single platoon and is going to cost me around 200pts. Money wise however it's cost me only £24 which is amazing! I still have another 20 guys on the way which leaves me to hunt for another 10 to complete the second platoon.

As well as my renegade antics, I've started doing small commissions and have had the opportunity to paint some marines of late. This is the first model to be painted, a chaplain and then I have 10 tac marines to get on with over the next fortnight, all of the Carcharodons Chapter:

The client wanted a bone coloured Chaplain (not deathwing) so I went for a savage darker look to suit the background complete with black eyes - just like a shark! The tribal pattern around his shoulder was fun to do and I'm looking forward to putting detail like this on tac squad.

That's me for now folks but looking forward to sharing more over the next week!

Now, time to put in a Forgeworld Order....

Staying on target.....

It's been a busy week but fortunately, I managed to put aside the time to get some hobbying done! It has also been a pretty tasty week in terms of purchases too....

SUPPLY DROP!!!

First up my order from element games, many thanks to them Got my HQ choice, my Heretek Magos Stand in, a small box of cultists to act as my Magos's retinue, red spray for my armies undercoat, razorwire for bases, paint for my commission and a base for a very special piece for sale (I'll show that off at a later date....). Oh! And magnets, you'll see why shortly. These are 2mm rare earth ones.

MORE REINFORCEMENTS!!

Now this is what I am talking about! Bagged three Renegade Ogryns and a Decimator with Conversion Beamer and Storm Laser. With my army, because my HQ is a Heretek Magos, I can take Decimators as Elites choices! Hurray! I have read they aren't the best but he's nice and fluffy and has some really cool rules, can't wait to field him.

Also, you don't have to wait long to see them built

And I thought dreadnaughts were cool. This guy is huge, standing at about 5 1/2 inches, he is going to get a good vantage point anywhere on the battlefield! Super happy with the way the pose can out too, very aggressive and sinister.

Both this guy's arms are magnetized at the forearm, so I can twist the weapon, and at the gun joint so I can change weapons between matches. Never used magnets before, but it wasn't that bad to be honest, well apart from trying to glue my hands together

These guys are such great miniatures, just love the aesthetics of them: hulking, sycopathic monsters ready to beat the living out of the foe. In game they cost a pretty penny though, this squad of three sets me back roughly 230pts!! While my Decimator is my favourite model, these will be the best to paint for sure.

Also, I've made good headway with my commission on the Carcharodons but they are in the messy wash stage of things so I'll show them off when they look a little prettier.

Next time I should be able to show you my built Magos and maybe some paint on some heretical scumbags, ciao for now!

Thanks mate, it's a great book isn't it? Just rammed full of character and flavour. I hope to have some friends up for that chappie very soon.

Just working on a test renegade now, simple but hopefully effective scheme....

It's been a while since I saw a good renegade army, look forward to seeing how it goes; if the chaplain is the standard your going for, it should be pretty good

Haha, thanks man. Really enjoying the vibe the army gives, hoping my take on it all lives up to it!

Januine, you NEED to! There are such nice miniatures and with the Packmaster and Hounds in the mix too, they make a very cool unit on the field! Oh btw, been lurking on your blog and you have some great stuff going on, I'll pop along later to say hi!

Cheers fella! Yer always welcome along!! Aye - that packmaster orgryn is awesome. Really have to get the lot of them. FW have done a cracking job on the chaos militia there. Totally sends me back to Gaunt and the Sabbat worlds books. Resin though....hmmm....... always worried how it'll stand up to the hot humid weather we get over here. then again.....it's not 'finecast'lol

You've added even more awesome since I last saw your blog!

Yeah, planning for five or six personally along with the packmaster. Glad I'm not the only one who likened the renegades to that of Gaunts Ghosts, such great reads and full of character. I wouldn't mind knocking up a couple of those demon engines on the traitor world....hmmmmmmm. Aye being in blighty, I have no worries when it comes to temperature! You dealing with some serious heat?

It's not so much the heat. Doesn't really go over 30C which is fine. But at this time of year, the humidity is gak. Really heavy thick air. Doesn't hurt painting much as I use a wet palette all the time but any sort of spraying is out of the question and it totally sucks the energy out me. Meh - only a few more weeks of it to go.
Wanting to do a dark mechanicum force at some point. Those orgryns with a few tweaks would be awesome hench troops. Definitely want to build one of asphodel's ' woe machines' - need a seriously bigger bits box first lol

Nice! Someone else who does renegades! I love forgeworld's models for these guys, 5 years in and I have finally found my plastic crack. I'll be all over this thread, which, it looks, to be coming along very nicely! Just need to convert all my 2nd hand Cadians now...

Ouch, I can definitely see why that might affect you!
They do have some great parts to suggest they are affiliated, one has a big cog strapped to his belt and with all the tubes etc. they fit right in IMO. Think I'll have to reread the book with them in, been years - you remember the description of them?

Hurrah! There are other out there! Welcome to the party mate. You going down the conversion kit route for all of your renegades?

Also, small update - just about finished a Renegade test model, will share it tonight if I can!

iirc asphodel made loads of different types. there were the stalker tanks which were cool as hell. Dave taylor did an awesome one as part of his Blood Pact project - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/150/226624.page

He and krautscientist are two of the best chaos kitbasher/converter/scratch builders I've come across. Simply awesome

the 'woe machines' descibed in Gaunt were some nastyass machines. Definitely need to be built!!!

"The scale of the enemy woe machines is almost unimaginable, the sheer cruelty... extraordinary: great flywheels fixed with blades, scissoring jaws, vast wheels designed purely for crushing, insectoid crawlers breathing flame from draconian snouts.

They are the mechanisms of an insane torturer made real and magnified to giant proportions. The Imperial Guard is many things, but in the end, it is only flesh and bone and blood, and these... are fashioned simply to strip and rend and break those mortal substances quite utterly.
Marshal Blackwood, 757.M41, in his private journal."

from the background book to the Sabbat Worlds Crusade

always quite fancied having a go at making one of the chaos wirewolves too. they were nasty business!

Ah! Wirewolves are the ones I was thinking about! But the Woe Machines also sound pretty cool.... Hmmm.... time to look at the dinobot chaos kits and see if I can manipulate one.... I reckon that you make the Forgefiend kit into something Wirewolf like, I could also maybe use them Impalers instead of the Forgeworld version
