Listen up green skins! This here is da start of Mad Goon's Grots. We're a grot army dat counts as orkies. Spare me yer line o sight, base size grumbles. We fight for fun only, the way it's 'possed to be.

As a little background, I like the idea of a grot army....but, them lot is only good for kicking an sticking. So, I'll be modeling a grot army that counts as orks. I'm leaning towards a green tide shoota army that looks something like this....

Big Mek
Big Mek

30 Shoota Boyz
30 Shoota Boyz
30 Shoota Boyz
(I may adjust to 20 per mob, and may also add/change 1 mob to sluggas)

2 Def Koptas
2 Def Koptas

3 Killa Kans
3 Killa Kans
3 Killa Kans
(I may drop/swap 3 Kans depending on how it plays)

The fluff.
A mob of Bad Moon grots (Mad Goon is a play on this) run off the battlefield because, well, they're grots. After the battle they come back for the pickings because, again, they're grots. They find no orkies but a nice supply of Bad Moon toys. With no orks, the grot with the biggest gun decides he is now equal to an ork warboss. Grots don't ask questions to anything with a bigger gun, but since Mad Goon can be an ork, they are too. Mad Goon agrees because, what warboss wants to lead an army of grots? And there you have it.

As far as the sudden burst in strength and orkish characteristics, they owe that to a little blue pill. Ha ha ha, just go with it. It's gonna be a fun show.

Now the fun stuff, this will be a long slow army build. What, did you think grots would become orks overnight?

I realized I needed bits and grots. At least a pile of each to start. And if I'm fielding 100+ grots, I need more than the 10 poses in a gw box. So, I went hunting on eBay. I found out that goblins are a suitable substitute. But, fantasy does not like different poses for troops. Then I found a nice pile of gnoblars and snatched em up. You ready for some pictures yet?

So here's what the gnoblars pile looks like. It was listed as ogre kindoms bits. And it definitely has a bunch of ogre weapons that I probably won't use. When I broke into the bits I was happy to see some unique grot poses that just need some dakka bit. But then I came across about 20 gnoblars carrying piles of dirty laundry. WTF! This ain't a dry cleaning shop, its a war! I figured they are useless and maybe I could sneak a few in as filler/fodder.

I kept digging through the bits and found out ogres are much bigger than grots (gnoblars). Check out the club and fist, way to big. The fist alone is as big as a grot.....actually, its almost the same size as the body...almost exactly....if I just had some limbs and a head.....

Well, you know grots, always jamming their bits where they don't belong!

So I hacked off the laundry grot's legs, and gave them a test fit on the ogre fist...hehehe, bootleg grots coming up!

But the leg bits end at the knees, and proportions are key to a proper 40k model (you see what I did there?).

Hmm, I need some grot thighs (and an order of wings, a coke, some breadsticks)....wait breadsticks....ogre clubs. The ends of the ogre clubs! Chopped and glued. Here is the first real progress pic. I will modify some stances, chop some of the "armor", and be able to use these guys as 'ard Boyz. Or not. I haven't decided yet. I'll be able to make about 50 of these bodies but only around 20 laundry legs.

Always always love grot armies. I have quite a few grot conversions myself, lemme spoiler you some to get your kunnin' but brutal juices flowin'!

Spoiler:

I use the necro grots as Shoota boyz (or cron allies). The immortal grot is a flash git, and the Mega Armoured Grot.... is well.... a Mega Armoured Grot!

Love the fists your using as armour, looks really effective with the legs sticking out the bottom. A few other grot ideas I have kicking about;
  • A tower of grots holding each other up, also holding up armour plates, forming a Grot Kan! - think the knoblars who are on each others shoulders
  • Grot kopta! - no engines, just grots in hamster wheels turning the kopta blades!

  • Favourite Game: When your Warboss on bike wrecks 3 vehicles simply by HoW - especially when his bike is a custom monowheel.

Thanks for the kind words! And those necron conversions are really great. I never thought to convert them but now I'm wondering how a converted destroyer would look (for the Koptas).

If you play orks you can convert anything That's the rule I go with! Just make some fluff to go along with it and your golden Currently working on an enormous Gorkanaut that is a combo of a necron triach stalker, some big Nid beasty, plenty of GS and some ork stuff ofc

For a grot-necron destroyer you could have loads of wires coming out of the back of the torso of the destroyer, have them go off to maybe some broken looking control panels with some screaming grots in front of it. Maybe a grot or two hanging off as the destroyer flies out of control?

Just a small update for now. I picked up a pile (around 100) of 2nd edition gretchins on eBay for cheap. I needed (and still need) bodies and bits. Sadly, the bodies are about the only usable part besides bases. I think they are an ok model if fielding in small quantities, but that isn't my plan. I want 100 grots that look like grots.

I modified two as a test. I was trying to determine plastic hardness (for carving ease) and possible pose options. I don't think I can alter the torso and leg pose enough just by carving to make them an easy option. I will likely get out the dremel and start kit bashing the current gw grots, 2nd edition, and gnoblars that I have. I'd like to throw in some whf goblins but they don't have many different poses either. If anyone knows of some solutions let me know!

After hiding through the battle, a lone grot emerges from the rubble. The ringing in his tiny head is nothing new but this time it won't stop. As he claws his way to the top of a pile of bodies he sees something in the distance. He jumps and points wildly screaming with delight but he can't hear his own voice over the ringing. Out of instinct he ducks his head to avoid a swinging ork fist but to his surprise, there isn't the thump of his skull meeting a knuckle duster. He looks around and there aren't any orks. There aren't even any humies. A smile rips across his twisted face as he runs to his newly claimed loot.

I'll be using this guy as one of my big shootas. There's still some work to be done with painting details. The gun came from a mech warrior mini (wizkids). I should be able to get a decent amount of bits off the mechs. Here is also an AOBR shoota for size.

When I made my Grot army (link in sig), I too had need for Gobbo parts, especially hands (as I converted them from Basicks Gobs). I used that molding stuff which you can heat up in hot water to make molds (2-sided) which I used to sculpt my own hands. Maybe a good tip for you too.

Loving the thread and will be following this one. Feel free to steal any ideas from my Grot army, should you find something to your liking.

If you could I would appreciate it. Or even just the unit name that gw sells them as.

I checked out your army and loved it! I did pick up some thermal plastic but I'm not sure on the casting material. I tries super sculpey but I just don't like the end result. It seems way too brittle. What did you use? I may attempt resin next.

I forgot about this thread...but I haven't made much progress. There are a few things I did mange to work on in the last few years. First, I have a weirdboy grot. This fella is a Scrappa pogo I think? From blood bowl. I also have a walker kan. I like the actual kan model but I want a more cyberpunk aesthetic. And lastly, a hover bike. I feel like the grots have become more clever with no orks around.

Ooh grots, always fun . For other kits: try the old WHFB gobbo spearmen sprue, they come with wolf rider legs as well. I find the gnoblar bodies small but doable, don' t like their heads though
