I’ve been having fun with rust. It can be pretty bright. I’m still working on an effective read on what colors to use and where. Included a few real world shots so fellow dakka users can reference this vs the real world.

Still working on corrosion on my second drone. It’s been a good learning experience. I haven’t previously used paint chipping at all on my vehicles, nor have I added rust or corrosion to any of the green plating on the outside of my tanks or vehicles. So, pushing the envelope a little bit I added both to this most current drone project. I really enjoy how the overall rusting effect gets built up over time. I’ve been using a rust effects kit from Vallejo paints, as well as the added Vallejo skin wash, doom bull brown. Pretty happy so far. I have one more drone to complete, and then I have to start green stuffing and magnetizing them. They all need flesh mowers. Since my army is pretty vehicle heavy, I plan on picking up a myphetic crawler or three.

While I dont have my army all figured out, nor do I own the codex yet, I have been trying to figure out what my list will look like for the Mortis Apostate.

Currently something like this, bc I am trying to save money and cant afford to add lots of new bling to my army. Thus I am only really considering adding two units of terminators.

Lord of Contagion
Sorcerer

10 Plague marines Rhino
10 Plague Marines
20 Pox Walkers
20 Pox Walkers

Tallyman
5 DG terminators
5 DG Terminators

3 Foetid Bloat Drones

Defiler
Plague Burst Crawler

Something like that. I am trying to add less than 100$ worth of stuff, and five terminators and 2 blight haulers seem like a good investment.

Your rust effects are some of the best I've seen, and I've seen a lot on Dakka (especially when i was doing my Necromunda terrain project). Very well done.

You mentioned around a year ago that you were downsizing your hobby collection. Looks like you cut even deeper than you had then. What do you have left?

Cool to see you active on something, its always a pleasure to see your work.

What’s up Skalk. Good to see you too amigo. I did get rid of over half my army. I moved from CA to Virginia, then back to Seattle, and then too and from North Carolina twice. Being a biologist is rough. Either way I discovered along the way that. I was feeling tied down by my stuff, lots of which I never used. So… I have less stuff.

Thanks for the compliments on my rust. I’ve been really enjoying this aspect of the hobby. I got my sister into figure painting, and she has mad skills. I wasn’t painting at all for a couple years, but now that I am stuck in the wilds of southern Washington, I rediscovered my passion for painting, but as a less bulk oriented and more for fun oriented hobby. It’s been good. Glad your still kicking around here.

Ps. This is what I currently have left. I am in the process of finishing my last six models. Then I have to start basing them. One of my favorite parts of finishing a model. I’ve got about 60 that I need to base with mud, bodies and body parts, and barbed wire.

Noxious blightbringer more or less finished painting today. I’ve been using the heavy warm grey from Vallejo game color for my pallid looking flesh. On some of my past models it came out looking super bright using other flesh combinations. I like the more subdued color scheme for the tentacles. Some models have way to many. This one is just about as much as I think any mini should have. Also pretty happy with Game Color Tinny tin as a base for the Balthazar gold dry brush when making brass.

Been using AK streak n grime with reductive shading in these guys.
Base coat all the areas.
Wash with Streak and grime.
Use Q tip with white thinner to remove the streak n grime from the high light areas. I went a bit heavy on this step here
Go back in and add the washes and highlight areas that need it. I also do chipping and sponge weathering at this time rather than later since I like to be able to really see the chipping I am doing rather than having it concealed. Maybe not the most realistic but I like doing it that way.

Started this mini a couple of years ago. A good conversion that a mangled by rushing. There are a few points on it that didn’t turn out as well as I would have liked. The right elbow I lengthened bc I didn’t feeel like GW had the proportions right. They did. I rushed the clean up on his left hand and now there’s still a hint of ax still left where he’s gripping the haft. Did my best to cover that up. Also, the top where I made the pestilence organ pipes, the central three needed to be a few mm longer but they are what they are.

My second effort at free hand. Turned out ok.

He needs some work on the rust effects for his armor and then he’s pretty much done. Overall I’m just glad. He’s my last marine for a time. I have a bloat drone and one more daemon and then ALL my minis are painted. All. Lol!

Working on finishing up my third and final drone. This is also THE last DG model I have that remains unpainted. I also only have 1 daemon model left to paint. Weird feeling to know that I don’t have any knee models to paint. I am going to have to start sculpting them.

I like how the mottled skin on the belly turned out. Looks very bruised frog. I used to get paid to hunt bullfrogs so this is something I know. The corrosion on the face and body looks good. All I gotta do is finish the face and done corrosion and it is done.

And complete. My last unpainted Deathguard model of my Mortise Apostate army. Now I gotta start basing them and sculpting new stuff to paint. I do still have two models that need touch ups and I’m thinking about oil wash ring all of my pox walkers since they are so bright compared to slot of other minis in my army. But for now I’m pretty much done.

I still really like the bruised skin I did. Lots of stippling which was my sisters suggestion.

There is still one daemon to paint though.

That looks great! The aging and corrosion has been really well executed.

Thanks JamesY. I think I like messing models up more than I do painting them if that makes sense. I really got into adding dust and mud effects to some of my tanks. Been looking at all the new Horus heresy 30k stuff. Maybe a leviathan dread?

I have two of the new plastic leviathans on my painting table at present. I think that you'd have a lot of fun with the kit. Model that size is going to made a lot of mess, so lots of good opportunities to use pigments and powders on them.

Agreed. Are you building those up for your Iron Warriors? Seems like a natural for that arm6 to have a few leviathan dreads here n there.

No, the Iron Warriors are finished with no plans to do any more. Sons of Horus now. Something a bit different, but can still ally them together for Siege of Terra themed games. I'll put up pictures in my blog thread as I do them.

Look forward to seeing your next pieces.

I still have a total of two minis that I need to paint. The Spoilpox scrivener and a Warhound Titan. The Titan isn’t finished with being converted. So, that might not happen for a while. In keeping with my self promise that I am not buying new minis when I can sculpt them I started working in sculpting a Greater unclean one.

I started with a mock up using modelling clay. From there I made a mannequin out of tin foil and wire. Now I’m building that up using sculpty.

It has a huge bulbous belly it’s dragging. I’m thinking about having the crotch of the model blown out and a nest of entrails and playing nurglings dragging behind it. I’m also considering having it modeled with a LONG coiling tongue dangling down and huge horns. That coil to the front like a Minotaur.

I made good progress. Most of this I did today. Tomorrow I am planning on trying to get the other leg and arm situated as well as the head. Hands and feet are last since I really don’t enjoy sculpting those.
