Warlord Games is absolutely delighted to have secured the licence to produce a miniatures game based on the BBC's enormously popular TV series, Doctor Who (back on BBC One on September 19th!). So delighted we might just have a celebratory jelly baby.
As lifelong Doctor Who fans ourselves, we are extremely pleased to have the chance to bring this iconic series to the tabletop with a game system you all know and love as well as the official range of miniatures to complement it.
The licence covers not just the latest series of Doctor Who but encompasses all of the Doctors, their companions and their foes. So, expect to see Sea Devils as much as Weeping Angels, Leela as much as Martha Jones, and a long, brightly coloured scarf as much as a fez (fezzes are cool, by the way...).
We'll bring you news, previews and work-in-progress in the coming weeks and months. Keep an eye on the Warlord Games website and weekly email newsletter for further details.
However if you want to be the first to hear all the news, be sure to sign up below to the Doctor Who Miniatures Game newsletter.

There was me thinking Dad's Army would be Warlord's coolest licence ever.
Next stop for Warlord must be world domination.
Good luck to them.

So if they have Dr Who and Dad's Army... what is the next BBC license I wonder.
I'll be interested to see how their models size up to the Crooked Dice ones as they have produced some outstanding stand in models so far

Didn't Crooked Dice also call their game the "Doctor Who Miniatures Game" when they still had the licence? Could have possibly chosen a better name choice to avoid confusion. =/

They did indeed. They still sell the starter booklet, though the website for it hasn't been updated since 2013 ( http://www.drwhominiatures.co.uk/). Time to do a site scrape before it (potentially) goes away. They did close down the Yahoo and facebook groups a few months ago though
I'll be interested to see what rules Warlord intend to use for these too

You can still buy copies of the Crooked Dice rulebook at shows, though those are presumably old stock. I picked up a copy at one and frankly its just 7Tv with different names (or rather 7Tv is that with name changes).

Ok, so the first thing I see on my Blogger newsfeed about this is the writer stepping forwards.
The rules are due to be written by John Lambshead, who has written a few supplement books for Warlord in the past:
- Bolt Action: Germany strikes!
- Hail Caesar: Brittania
He has also written Warhammer Ancients: Fall of the West

Is it just me or is Doctor Who a pretty odd choice for a tabletop wargame? The central character has spent almost his entire life (the War Doctor notwithstanding) trying to avoid any kind of violence at all, never mind all up war.
I'm sure a fun game can be made of Cybermen fighting Daleks, but it just feels weird and not a good fit for the license.

As a wargame I agree Doctor Who makes little to no sense however the announcement does say miniatures game not miniature wargame. I can't help but wonder if Warlord are looking at the silly amounts of money being thrown by gamers at the likes of Zombicide and Imperial Assault. A campaign driven board game with excellent minis could certainly work with the Doctor Who license.

Can you make space corridors for less than the original series scenery budget? Can someone make 28mm scale egg boxes so you can do authentic 70s Who sets?

So basically a cops and robbers game, but if you ever roll a double 1 you must immediately have an existential crisis, mental breakdown or wierd dream sequence featuring creepy 70s children's TV?
A year ago, I'd have been jumping up and down at the idea of official Dr Who minis, but the last series was bad enough to kill my interest in the show for the most part. Still, might not be able to say no to some nice 28mm Daleks...

If it's anything like the other Warlord boxed things, plenty of empty space, not to mention a shoddy getting started booklet that will tell you to read the included rulebook and play from there.

7TV is a development of the Dr Who Miniatures Games.
Presumably Warlord will write a new set of rules. It will be a chance to put in some non-destructive elements, though TBH non-violent resolutions normally consist of the Doctor getting everyone to sit down and negotiate, which doesn't seem like a good rule mechanism in itself but if it can be made dependent on achieving non-violent scenario objectives I think it could be done rather well.
The big plus here is that we can hope for good 28mm figures for all the major monsters.

Very cool, I can see a really great skirmish game being made out of it.
Themed scenario games don't have to be violent to be fun, the "steal mushrooms from farmer maggot" lotr scenario was great.
If anything there's an opportunity there to create a different kind of wargame, one that focuses on objectives and outsmarting to win rather than violence.

Chances are there will be a rule that the good Doctor has a special sort of plot armour that prevents him from being harmed by anything.

Crooked Dice didn't have a licence, as far as I know. It was and is all unofficial.

Debatable judging by Gates of Antares. Although all the design work is already done for Cybermen, Daleks, etc, and WLG do make nice miniatures (as opposed to the ones they buy from others).
