Hello, and welcome to my current painting blog

I have decided that rather than creating different threads for each crazy gak i paint, i'll keep a single rolling thread and will update the title when needed.

As those following over the years probably noticed, i'm only painting but not playing at all, so it'll be an interesting mix.

What i'll add here to start with is the 2 Horus Heresy plastic boxes - planning on doing Imperial Fists, Thousand Sons and World Eaters.
Haven't decided on the 4th faction yet

I'll paste below links to various completed stages over time.
And now, the original post and the start of the Mechanicus painting!

Ave Deus Mechanicus, brethren adepts

As of today, I will start working on a game-valid, Mechanicus army. This will consist of 2 formations, the death star Cohort Cybernetica and an Ironstrider Cavaliers.
As I understood from other members of the conclave, I should be able to field these 2 formations without needing to declare them as Unbounded.
However, as an adept that has just joined the ranks of the Mechanicus, I still have to learn the rules of Warhammer – so for the time being this is more of a modelling project rather than a battle-ready army.

To please the Omnissiah, the army will be painted in Mars colours and will have its very own diorama. The terrain will be a raised, martian, smoking battlefield. Minimum debris/mechanical parts spread on the soil. However, I am thinking of adding the objective markers as well as part of the diorama, but for the moment I need inspiration to further expand on this subject.

Work has started with the small guys first. That’s the Dominus, the 2 Datasmiths and the 3 riders. Pictures just for the first 3, as the riders were a nightmare to get standing on their own only with blutac. Regarding the Datasmiths, I’m quite happy to see that while their posing is fairly rigid, it is possible to incline one to his left and get a much more dynamic stance.

And a very quick look at how I plan to build/arrange the diorama. Top and front view, for a better noospheric representation. Hexamathical measurements have been taken, and will result in a 45 x 33 centimetres board, in the lettering of Old Earth.

+Clarification: I do intend to use rail (o-Gauge, mode train scale, etc) smoke-generators tied to a series of thin pipes (straws?!) to get a nice smoking battlefield effect. As I understand, the majority of these need a power connection and will not work on simple batteries. Wiring the entire diorama to a wall socket won’t be a problem.+

+Interrogation: Is it possible to fit these generators up-side-down, so the smoke will be pushed down the pipes? Alternatively, is the use of a tiny/laptop fan advised, in order to get the smoke through all the piping and “out of the ground”?+

+Request: Any adept with basic or extensive knowledge about rail-modelling and smoke generators is kindly asked to step forward.+

ooooh - liking the idea. Have fun with the new AdMech figs - they are glorious!! (Though the Kastelan heads are a bit iffy.....have a look at FW's Castellax for a different take) I've been working through some of the new GW AdMech stuff and really really loving painting them. One wee word of advice, paint them in sub-assemblies; they are so detailed and with some many wee parts it's hard to get into the tiny nooks and crannies otherwise. Enjoy and may the Machine God forever smile upon your calculations

Haha, i had a feeling you'd be the first one to comment lol.

Regarding sub-assemblies, i'm all up for that. As you probably noticed on my Death Guard thread, i paint everything and then i put glue to the wound

As for the heads, i got two cool sets, if you need some eBay can help for "alternate Kastelan heads".

I plan on using 3 of them, and for the fourth just use the standard one. Filled in and smoothed out, and paint it as a special:

Thank you for the advice, brother. And may Omnissiah shine upon your Knight!

Glad to see y'all like the new heads. They feel a bit weird being so small/short, compared to the bulk of the robot

Also, probably no one noticed - the heads for the Datasmiths are also different, as i didn't liked the kit ones. Went with some from the Ironstrider, but now the cables from the front unit to his head won't fit. Need to work on that

A bit of work was done here inbetween Death Guard contemptor bitz.

Nothing to write home about, really. Just primed the units with Vallejo black surface primer. First time using this stuff, and it's a blast! Even easier to clean the airbrush afterwards

Next step will be masking and painting the robes
Pics, as soon as possible

Ha, not a lot of work actually Bash
But thanks!

That said, i managed to paint the robes yesterday. I might have went trigger happy on the orange for the Dominus, i'll lay a bit of red laze to see if it fixes it.

Before and after taking off the blutac

And the Dominus blutac'd in place to get a better view

Next step, metals. Probably large areas will be sprayed with Alclad. Then bronze trimming

Anyone who might have a word to say re: the glazing and if it will fix the orange, feel free. Never used a glaze before.

Also, still looking for hints regarding the smoke generators.
Stay tunned!

Very nice airbrushing work. Like the way you blocked off the other areas.

Yeah, i think i read this idea with blutac here on Dakka. And was thinking wow, that really makes sense.

Of course, it's not very precise around small details, but i can't say i'm bothered, there's minimal blocking to do now

Did you find that the blu-tac left a residue on the bits it was sitting on? I gave this a try once and it may have just been my particular brand of blu-tac, but there was a film of gunk on the bits where paint wouldn't sticl

@Januine is right here. Just use a bit of blutac to remove anything. Now, i guess you mean a sticky residue and not tiny bits of blutac? I haven't had any issues like that, but then again i tend to use the same blutac again and again and again. Give it a try as per Januine's instructions or grt a different brand

Thank you both, if i keep getting more feedback like that i might actually drop the idea of toning down the orange.

I start liking it myself a lot more now.
Today i should be able to lay a bit of metal, most probably drybrushed.

If you dont like the orange you could always just wash it.

Right gang, here we go again!

The Dominus has received some much needed love
All blocked, and metalics drybrushed - touchups needed

And after about 3 more hours, bronze trimmings complete, as well as metal washes and drybrush highlights.

The orange trimmings around the holes in the robe will probably take a lot of time next, so i don't expect to have a quick update

Thanks for looking!
Any ideas, shout
Alex

Yeah, ciuncky's gang
Welcome!!!

The metalics are already washed with Nuln Oil. Part of the wash was lost under the highlights, but that was later fixed. I guess the lighting was more than what these pics needed and that's why they look so clean. Anyhow, i don't want to get them very dirty

Looking back at it, I can see the wash. It looks a little light, but that may be the lighting added to the fact that I might overwash a little

Yeah, some parts might have been a bit under-washed or the black obscured by new highlights. That said, i'm trying to take it easy on the weathering and not go trigger-happy as with the Death Guard.

Thank you all, a great deal of work went into this little fella. I keep saying that i won't spend as much time on the others, but this is the HQ. I know I'm deluding myself. Not entirely happy with how it looks, but miles away from my skills 2 years ago.
