Hi

A mate of mine recommended I show off my Black Templars here. I'm new (-ish) to the hobby (been painting on and off for about 7 months). I'll be posting stuff here mostly as it's completed (or as it's completed, then I notice things I wanna touch up/change ect.), so I guess it's kind of a blog. I'll try to keep things updated, though it might depend a bit on having access to a camera as nice as the one I got to use for these initial pictures.
More to come soon though! I have already finished a few more dudes!

A bit of fluff (Disclaimer - I know next to nothing about the lore of the 40k universe. Sorry. I welcome all criticism and verbal abuse.)

Whilst on the Armageddon Crusade's warpath, Helbrecht's forces encounter an Orders Militant fleet, tasked with the purging of a weaponized Ork space hulk in orbit of a moon-sized Agri-world. Mindful of the Order's long history of shared operations with the Templars, and indeed the benefit of assisting to the Crusade, Helbrecht extends his assistance.
The ensuing operation is swift and efficient. Unfortunately, upon cornering the warboss at the ship's helm, a particularly powerful weirdboy, a potent psychic blast is unleashed in the hulk's bridge, killing all present, save one Sister of Battle, Sister Agatha. Agatha initially seems mentally incapacitated, becoming prone to fits, and incomprehensible rantings. The Inquisition is dully summoned.
However, following weeks of quarantine, and excruciating interrogation and testing, Agatha is discharged.
Her fits - visions.
Her rants - messages.
Their source - the God Emperor of all mankind.
Following much prayer and meditation, Agatha is taught to understand and control these blessings, and ascends to living sainthood. Furthermore, the fractured messages she has received seem to be urging her to a sacred journey.
The Imperium, however, can ill-afford to bend to the whims of but one saint, and refuses her any military assistance. In her desperation, Saint Agatha appeals to the Marshalls of the Black Templars. Though Helbrecht cannot assent to the diversion of his Crusade to Armageddon, he agrees to allow a volunteer force to accompany Agatha on her quest, to rejoin the Crusade should the mission be a success. This is the Warband of the Pilgrim Saint.

feth, I hope that wasn't too long and gakky, got a bit carried away there!
Anyways, here's some pics, if any of yous are also into lists, feel free to hurl some advice my way!
Thanks for looking!

Group shot of the Warband as it exists at the moment. If you want any more pics of any of my Templars, just say. I've got a bunch on my profile too.

The Pilgrim Saint. Decided to name her Agatha, after some dumb band I like. Thought the bright red hair didn't really fit a 'Celestine'.

Glad to see you on here!

For your first batch of miniatures I think they're great. Not sure on feedback. I like the fluff though.

Here's a little update for anyone out there.
Please excuse the godawful quality of this one. I no longer have access to a nice camera, along with a person who actually knows how to use said nice camera.

Nonetheless, here's how the warband looks at the moment. I've finished a terminator chaplain, an emperor's champion and a razorback, and am slowly making progress on my Terminators. you can also see the base-coated assault marines, sternguard vets. and the still-boxed Land Raider Crusader in the back.

Cheers!

Really good man.
I had a look at the other pictures in your gallery, you should definitely put them up in here.
The only major issue I noticed is your mold lines. Consider removing these entirely before painting

Keep it up

Another underwhelming update for you brave and bored denizens of cyberspace!
In the absence of any real progress, and as one person was so kind as to suggest I ought to post 'em, here are some fancy shots of some of my Templars from during the summer, back when I had access to a nice camera. These aren't all of them, just the ones I was most pleased with at the time. I feel like I ought to add that I have since started putting Lamain Medium over some of those decals.

This one's gonna be a bit of an imagedump, but thanks for checking it out anyway. As always, any tips or critiques you might have are appreciated!

Your 7+ months of painting already looks miles better than mine, and I've been painting for 4+ years. Lovely Templars

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."
Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

I haven't had much sleep, so what better time than to post another update!

Here is my Terminator Chaplain, Emperor's Champion, and a converted Space Hulk terminator.

On the Chaplain I tested out using a micron pen to do the writing on his parchment. Please tell me what your thoughts are!
The Space Hulk Terminator is among the first of a few conversions from Blood Angels kits (though my earliest Termies (which are humiliatingly still wip, after well over half a year at this point) are also converted, only from the Dark Angels). I kept it pretty simple, only getting rid of the most obvious stuff and push-moulding some greenstuff over the top.

Thanks for looking!

You should work on the whites more, you really need to do them with loads of thin coats to get them smooth. Lahmium medium would help.

I think his whites look fine, at least in the larger pics. There's a couple of robes that could use a little more highlight so as to not look so grey, but those shoulder pads are aces. If I may lay down a critique, though? In the first image:

The text on the back banner is perfectly straight and even while the banner itself is wrinkled. As the text is directly across the folds, then the lettering would follow the curvature of the material. As it is, it looks like you just stuck a decal over the thing and didn't think about it.

Finished another couple of models!

One Assault Terminator (What? That's not a nemesis force sword, it's a thunder hammer. No, really. I mean, I couldn't have a squad of Black Templar Sword Brothers and not have at least one sword between them, that would be silly.) That one of my non-40k mates dubbed "Assassin's Creed", a name that has regrettably stuck.

Also here's my 1st tank! (nearly finished. still need to get hold of an extra cupola) Razorback 243: The Battle Tank Danzig. So named because I picked this up off a mate, and stripped the paint. He had got it off a Dakka swap some time ago, already primed, and had painted it up. After working through his job and the undercoat, I reached what was pretty obviously Ultrasmurfs blue, and eventually traces of bright red.
"The Danzig" moinker was sort of inspired by this, and my nerdish desire to create some fluff to pay homage to the tanks origins, along with the sheer trauma of stripping a tank with about 3 liberal paint schemes. What else, historically, is a cantankerous old dog of war, has fought under many flags, and is a symbol of chauvinist hyper-masculinity-to-the-point-of-homoeroticism? If you were thinking of the old Prussian city, you're wrong. I of course mean Glen Danzig, the toughest dude to have ever worn fishnets.
This is the first time I've ever free-handed onto a model too, let me know what you make of it

I like the idea that the Templars discover an old, still-functioning but abandoned loyalist razorback on a deathworld and send it to their tech-preists for a once-over for heresy, only to discover traces of evidence in the machine of centuries of service, past a lengthy stint in the ultramarines until the Tank's data is simply to aged and ill-attended to to be completely uncovered. As such, the tank is revered by the Templars for its machinespirit's dogmatic commitment to war in the name of the emperor. Whilst perhaps the temperamental presence of the aged Danzig is not the most reassuring in the heat of battle, its continued service is testimony to the indefatigablility of one who dedicates their existence to killing in the emperor's name.

Okay, another Poser McBogus first!
Actual WIP pics!

I'm looking for advice on these two dudes. First up is my captain in artificer armor. You can see him mocked up, and I'm pretty please with how that looks (paintjob is still unfinished right now, but y'all get the idea), but his head is held in place with blu tack, as I want it detached until I've finished both the torso and the head. The blu tack fills up a noticeable amount of space and elevates the head into the position shown. The obvious solution would be greenstuff. But should I put that in now, and paint it black, then glue the head to it, or do it as part of the final assembly and just hope that the green doesn't show up?

Also, what do you think about putting a white cross on his red robes? I've got decals, but I could (maybe) freehand it, though I've never really been good at maltese crosses, nor have I ever freehanded onto anything that wasn't a flat surface.

Finally, we got the guy with the hammer. 40K puritans and WYSIWYG players avert thy tender eyes. You can see where the hands are blu tacked on. I've already done a bit of filing down so that the surfaces seem to mostly match up (I kind of figure that the glue will melt the joints a bit anyway, and smooth out any gaps a bit). But should I just suck it up and slap a bit of greenstuff in those gaps, just to be sure?

Cheers fer looking!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also! I don't have any shoulder pads for the captain! Can I just use the plain spaghetti space marine ones, or will only Forge World ones be the right scale? Thanks!

Looks great. The marble effect looks really good and the control panels are gorgeous.
The only thing that bothers me a bit is that the crossing lines on what I think is the radar (?) in the first of the 3 pics is a bit off-center.
In the last pic is that a heartbeat monitor for the machine spirit? I love it.

For the marines, have you considered drilling out or maybe even just painting the barrels of bolters and such? Imo it adds a lot but not everyone likes it.

Well, it's been a while, folks.

Do not fear, however, the warband marches on!
I've not had a ton of time to paint recently, and my painting is increasingly divided, as I decided a couple of months back to more or less buy everything that I wanted for my Templars (more or less... Games Workshop still have their clammy-yet-powerful modeler's grip around my wallet's throat), causing me to leap schizophrenically between tanks and infantry, drop pods and characters, completing little, yet tearing through paint like a bejaysus.

But! Today I finally finished my first miniatures in months!
The FW tank crew kit is an absolute doozy - so much character for such small chunks of resin, I can't wait to add them to the tanks I'm building.
Also, the Danzig has been granted some new furnishings. I finally tried out one of the big ol' decals from the FW sheet. Whilst I could've done a better job of it, I'm pleased with how it came out. For future reference though, has anyone tried writing on top of decals with a micron pen?
Here are the pics - enjoy, and thanks for checking this out. I'll have some more stuff up in the coming days.

Unfortunately this is the day that the Warband of the Pilgrim Saint grinds to a halt.

I'm going abroad for a year, and there's not space for me to carry any Sisters or Templars with me - plus the journey is pretty extreme - Though many in the Warband have braved the perilous journey from Hull to Reading countless times, battling through the tunnels of the London Underground, across the great plains of East Yorkshire, and even through the irradiated death-worlds of Grantham and Hull, I think the journey to South Korea is too much even for Saint Agatha.

As such, they shall remain garrisoned in Reading.

At least they're all primed, and more than half have at least a layer or two of paint.

Here's a little group shot, mostly for me to look at when I miss painting and stuff, but also for all you nice folks who've helped me in the last 18 months of me being in this hobby - it's been a blast, and I'm going to return to it as soon as life stuff lets me. It gives ya a fairly good impression of how much the army has grown over the last year-and-a-half. I like to think I've made progress with my skills (though with my older, most complete models are at the front, this maybe isn't very obvious). I might put up more later - there are a few semi-painted minis that I'm quite proud of, and I'm still learning to use my new camera - Panasonic TZ57 (a brilliant little compact, especially considering the price).

You'll probably see me asking dumb questions in the army lists section over the next year, but as far as painting goes, this is McBogus, signing out.

Wait, it's been HOW LONG since I last painted a Black Templar? There's a new edition? Primaris Marines?

I'm back. Well, a little bit. My long hobby hiatus recently ended when I went to Tokyo for Korean Thanksgiving. While I was in Harajuku, I popped into the Games Workshop there, and grabbed some stuff. Obvs I picked up a few of the Japanese blind bag marines. I only got three, but boy oh boy are they nice.

I've finished the first, though no transfers on the shoulders until I get back to blighty.
I'm not sure what I'll do with the base - should I stick some sand on it to match the rest of the army, or butcher it (ahhh, it's so pretty though ) and then stick that on one of the 32mm bases? (I'm thinking of upgrading the 25mm bases when I get home anyway)

As ever, thanks for looking! Hope to have more stuff (like, only two marines, don't get too excited) soon!

It's Saturday night in Korea, and almost everyone's got vacation for new years, so you know what that means...

But, as it turns out, not too sick to paint.
Today I managed to finish the second of the three Japanese marines. Pretty pleased with this one too, so excuse the gratuitous macro shots - I couldn't help myself.

These have got to be some of the nicest plastic sculpts I've ever seen - I'd be shocked that they never bring them elsewhere. I wished I'd picked up two more so I could have a full squad
Anyway, that means the warband is back on hiatus now. I've got some plans for when I get back to the UK, but for now, I think this is as far as it'll go for the next few months.

Tried some stuff out on the flamer guy - I've never really tried to do any really finicky freehand on a templar. It was kind of supposed to be a homage to that one John Blanche painting of the black templars.

Probably won't try again, holy hell, that was difficult. Turns out the white for the white check on the kneepad is just as agonizing as doing it on pauldrons. Who knew?
