Subject: [1850] - Tyranids - Competitive List

So I'm debating on switching to Tyranids because I really like the looks and FMCs that the faction has. The list below is only 1770 points and I'm looking for some criticism and tips to improve the list. I'll primarily be play against Tau and Dark Eldar, but I also want to be able to bring the list to the tournaments in my area.
Skyblight Swarm
Hive Tyrant
Wings, 2x twin-linked Devourer with Brainleech worms, Electroshock grubs
Hive Crone
Stinger Salvo
Harpy x2
Twin-linked Heavy Venomcannon
10 Gargoyles x3
Combined Arms Detachment
Hive Tyrant
Wings, 2x twin-linked Devourer with Brainleech worms, Electroshock grubs
Malanthrope
Tervigon
Scything Talons, Stinger Salvo, Eclectroshock grubs
30 Termagaunts (1 unit)
15 Devourers, 15 Flesborers
Exocrine
Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Why bother with the Tervigon and Gaunts? Buy some Rippers and put the rest of the points into Mawlocs or more Gargoyles. 15 per brood is a good number and survivable. But too many small bugs means not enough big bugs. Middle of the road is never good with Nids when you're talking even slightly competitive. Go all in on one theme. And realistically, you should be running three Flyrants in this list.
The only reason to keep the Tervigon would be to Outflank via Hive Commander. But you haven't included that. And even then, against Dark Eldar and Tau, it's not going to be a good idea to leave momma alone on the side of the table.

It's not bad, but maybe not the best. The CAD should use both HQ slots for Winged Tyrants. If you add a Tervigon, I like to Outflank it using Hive Commander. I would keep the Termagants all vanilla to conserve points. I'd think about a Hormagaunt screen for Tervigon if you aren't going to Outflank.
If you want to upgrade gribblies, look at the Gargoyles, because they can respawn, so you might get enough production to justify the cost.

I'm actually glad Mawlocs were mentioned. I really wanted to run one in my list but I felt like I didn't have enough fodder. Again, I'm new to Tyranids and haven't played against them much either, so I'm just trying to build a solid 1850 list before making my purchase. With the suggestions mentioned, I've removed the Tervigon and Termaguants, added another Flyrant, 2x Ripper Swarms, and a Mawloc. I played around a little bit to see if I could get another Mawloc, but without removing the Exocrine, it doesn't look possible. Although, if removing the Exocrine for another Mawloc will prove more deadly, I could probably move some things around to get 5 more Gargoyles in each brood. So here are three list variations (all criticism welcome):
List One
Skyblight Swarm
Hive Tyrant (Wings): 2x Twin-linked Devourer with Brainleech Worms, Electroshock Grubs, The Miasma Cannon
Hive Crone: 1x Drool Cannon, Stinger Salvo
10 Gargoyles
10 Gargoyles
10 Gargoyles
Harpy: Twin-linked Heavy Venomcannon
Harpy: Twin-linked Heavy Venomcannon
Combined Arms Detachment
Hive Tyrant (Wings): 2x Twin-linked Devourer with Brainleech Worms, Electroshock Grubs
Hive Tyrant (Wings): 2x Twin-linked Devourer with Brainleech Worms, Electroshock Grubs
Malanthrope
3 Ripper Swarms
3 Ripper Swarms
Exocrine
Mawloc
Total: 1843
List Two: I had to remove The Miasma Cannon from the Skyblight Tyrant, the Electroshock Grubs from all Tyrants, and the Exocrine to insert another Mawloc and add 5 Gargoyles to each brood in the Skyblight Swarm.
Skyblight Swarm
Hive Tyrant (Wings): 2x Twin-linked Devourer with Brainleech Worms
Hive Crone: 1x Drool Cannon, Stinger Salvo
15 Gargoyles
15 Gargoyles
15 Gargoyles
Harpy: Twin-linked Heavy Venomcannon
Harpy: Twin-linked Heavy Venomcannon
Combined Arms Detachment
Hive Tyrant (Wings): 2x Twin-linked Devourer with Brainleech Worms
Hive Tyrant (Wings): 2x Twin-linked Devourer with Brainleech Worms
Malanthrope
3 Ripper Swarms
3 Ripper Swarms
Mawloc
Mawloc
Total: 1848
List Three: By taking the second list and replacing the Ripper Swarms with 2x 15 point Mucolid Spore Clusters for the Troops selection in the CAD and swapping the Malanthrope with a Venomthrope to keep Spore Cloud, I was able to free up enough points to include 2 Mawlocs and an Exocrine in the third list. I could swap the Toxinspikes from the Mawlocs for Electroshock Grubs if needed, not sure how often they will be locked up in close combat though.
Skyblight Swarm
Hive Tyrant (Wings): 2x Twin-linked Devourer with Brainleech Worms
Hive Crone: 1x Drool Cannon
10 Gargoyles
10 Gargoyles
10 Gargoyles
Harpy: Twin-linked Heavy Venomcannon
Harpy: Twin-linked Heavy Venomcannon
Combined Arms Detachment
Hive Tyrant (Wings): 2x Twin-linked Devourer with Brainleech Worms
Hive Tyrant (Wings): 2x Twin-linked Devourer with Brainleech Worms
Venomthrope
Mucolid Spore Cluster
Mucolid Spore Cluster
Mawloc: Toxinspike
Mawloc: Toxinspike
Exocrine
Total: 1850
Again, I'm completely new to Tyranids, and I've read that the Malanthropes are very important to have, especially since they have Spore Cloud and they're a Synapse Creature. However, I'm not sure if the Synapse in this type of list is more important than an extra Mawloc / Exocrine. Anyways, let me know what you guys think! Thanks in advance!

The Flyrant can't have the Miasma Cannon and two Devourers. It does replace a weapon and you need the full twelve shots to do a proper Strength 6 Spam.
Never remove the Grubs. Once you put models on table you'll see how amazingly versatile they are. I remember how they surprised me the first time I really got going and got good with positioning my Flyrants.
The biggest difference between the Venomthrope and the Malanthrope is T4 - T5. The T4 Venom can be instakilled by a Lascannon, Dark Lance, Heavy Rail Rifle, Krak Missile and so on. S8+ The Malanthrope has to be hit by S10 to get gibbed, which is rare on the table and easier to designate as the 'avoid LOS at all costs' danger area. However, the Venomthrope can hide under certain buildings. The Manufactorum set from GW and the Aquilla Administratum. If you play ITC rules that say a Barrage blast lands on the floor that the little center round part is touching, which makes it a bit more survivable against the bane of my Tyranid's existence: the Thunderfire Cannon. Just things to keep in mind.
So, other than the Miasma Cannon and without seeing what is common in your Meta, I would go with list 1. Worst case, the Malanthrope and a brood of Gargoyles escorts the Exocrine up the table giving the Gargoyles a 5+ Cover and the Exocrine and Malanthrope get a 3+ for intervening models. It's a good enough plan that it's worth getting on the table and trying it out for yourself. Just drop the cannon and add either Fighter Ace (an upgrade from the Leviathan supplement and Nids have a great one) to your Warlord or more Gargoyles.

Like SharkoutofWata said, never remove the grubs, they are just too good.
I too would go for List 1, except consider removing the Exocrine. The reason is that a large Plasma blast mounted on an MC sounds good in theory, but rarely makes back its points. There's too much cover around for it to be really effective, and it's not exactly hard to kill one MC. The one possible exception where I'd take an Exocrine is in combination with the Living Artillery formation, because there at least you get to reroll your scatters.
So my suggestion would be:
List 1
- Exocrine
+ Mawloc
+ 5 Gargoyles on two of the three units
