Subject: Karists! Let's Start With Troopers. Lots of Troopers.

I spent this weekend working on my first Maelstrom's Edge miniatures that I actually plan to use (I practiced on some Karist Troopers that you can see in the background, the yellow ones). So far I have 18 Karist Troopers, with an effort of giving myself some flexibility in squad builds and planning on using large, 5 man-squads. Yes, this is more than just what you get in the boxed sets. What can I say, I like troops!
For the conversions, the goal was to do simple conversions that only used the Karist Trooper sprue that you don't have to be Insaniak to do.
Here's a shot of the group:
I did a few conversions (which are focused on below), and each row is basically a squad. I like putting rifles on the Quintarch (or any sergeant-equivalent) if the model actually has it, but having two specialty weapons in two of the three squads offset that. One thing I noticed is that while I had to trim the anchor points of each piece, there were no mold lines! I was very happy about that. I found that putting both arms on the model with the plastic cement, then using the rifle to adjust the position of the arms worked very well for me.
Drilling the barrels was pretty easy as well, although I had to step down a few bit sizes from "bolter" (which was really big enough to drill pilot holes for carriage bolts). Also, this time around I managed to make sure that all of the models were facing the right way on the base with regards to the facing markers.
The conversions!
From left to right:
- This is a simple trimming of the empty left arm. It looks a little shorter, but I really like the pose much better. I'm going to try this again, but I'll extend the trimmed-off arm with another unused upper arm and cover some of the cheat with the pauldron.
- I was trimming down a Radwave Emitter to use the tip for a prop (see the fourth conversion) and got the idea to extend it out as part of a rifle. This is the end result, which I'll fill in a touch with greenstuff. I plan to use this as a Pulse Rifle Mk2.
- Chopping off the pistol and adding a Pulse Rifle to the right hand was very straightforward. It took more time to trim the left hand off of the rifle. The Pistol swap to the left hand was also quite simple.
- The left hand is holding the tip of a Radwave Emitter, and I positioned the head so he's (she's?) looking at it. I like the idea of it being a little sensor. I also cut the tip off of the Radwave Emitter in his (her?) right hand and re-mounted it transversely (as well as trimming off that pesky left hand!).
- This is just a simple re-mounting of the emitter portion of the Radwave Emitter, just like the fourth conversion. To me this conveys a bit more of the "spread" aspect of the weapon.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k. Rule #1 - BBAP

I might have to steal the extra long pulse rifle. I like the sensor, although I do wonder how he reads it. (Inception bwaaaah)
The transverse rad guns look much more three dimensional an visually interesting, but I had assumed the parabolic brackets kept the beam more focused in the vertical directions while allowing it to spread from side to side..?

Man, it's been a while. I've been busy, but each time I go to take pictures, it's too late or I'm too tired or Firaxis released X-Com 2 (the jerks).
Here's an overview of what I have so far:
That's four Kaddar Novas, eighteen Karist Troopers, a dozen Minnows, a dozen Tempests, six Shadow Walkers, one Mature Angel, fifteen Epirian Contractors, two Apprentice Bot Handlers, and two lonely Spider Drones.
Karist Close Up 1:
Karist Close Up 2:
My favorite Shadow Walker is the Flashdance one.
Epirian Close Up:
I haven't done as many conversions on the Epirians yet, as I'm starting to go more for speed. I have some ideas in mind, but just minor conversions so far.
I know that this is more than I'll need in a game, but I wanted to have lots of spares so I can try out many different loadouts and configurations. My goal is to have all of them assembled, based and primed by the end of March. Here's to hoping!

Another small update. I spent WAY too long on converting a mature angel, but now I've got all of the models I'm going to use assembled and based.
And primed.
Next up: Airbrush time.

Finally! An Update!
After driving me mad, I finally got the preliminary Karist Trooper finished. I like the color scheme, and found ways to paint it that doesn't take too long. I cheat by using some metallic medium on the purple (and the black of the weapon) to give it a tiny bit of sheen.
I also bought a pair of cheater lenses that attach to my glasses and magnify what I'm painting; it's about 6.02 x 10^23 times easier to get the small details now.
Now to finish the squad, and re-learn how to paint human flesh (it's been a LONG time since I've done that!).

I like it. Good contrasts, and the glow on the weapon looks ace.
Could maybe add another highlight to his eye pieces, as they're somewhat eclipsed by the weapon, at the moment.
