Hey all. I got in on the Kickstarter for Maelstrom's Edge and have been very excited about pretty much every part of it. I don't get to play games due to RL demands, but I am nevertheless keen to try with this little beauty. I got two starter boxes to give me good starting forces and the amount of plastic crack is huge!!!

So I wanted to start off with the Angel because it was probably my favourite sculpt. I have 4 and have plans to do 2 as combat, 1 as flying and 1 as slasher, when I've worked out what that is meant to be. The two combats are going to be pretty stock, because I need to get a feel for the models. So one will be in the box pose and the second is going tone climbing snow covered rock shards (pic below). I'll be entering at least "Rock Crawler" in Paradigm's painting challenge for February, check it out, there's some great stuff on there.

I don't paint as much as I'd like, but will update here as I go. I always welcome C&C so feel free!

Cheers Lego, had a flashback to Starship Troopers along with a bit of Avengers (with Hulk on the building) and just thought I would not want one of these bad boys looming over me!

Thank you everyone for your interest, I'm kind of overwhelmed. I don't think I've started a thread that stimulates so many responses!

Hope you continue to find this of interest then.

So the blu-talk is gone and here is the current positioning on base with legs nodded to fit in place:

Each leg had the lugs cut off and either trimmed or a bit of Green Stuff added in, except for it's back left leg which I glued directly in place for a sturdy reference point. I had to pin the front left to get it to stay in place then when the superglue was dry added the green stuff.

The right arm was gently bent out of shape to preseve the moulded lines of the plastic. The left was hacked a lot and rotated so that the top of the shoulder is further posterior and the armpit is slightly more showing. It needed a bit of shoulder shaving and then green stuff to try and return the natural lines. Not sure it was the greatest green stuff work I've done and have gone back and smoothed over the finger print I missed after Januine's eagle eyes spotted it. Here's how the GS looks:

Going to go for a purple and black scheme. Tempted to have the organic components based a light grey and then purple wash over them and then use wet blending on the legs and tentacles to blend purple in with possibly a nuln oil wash after. Think I might have to make a minnow too to test the scheme out

Oh dear. Then this happened:

Basic build except for the right arm - kept fouling with the leg, so bent it out slightly. Pleased with the base, these are the first I've used cork with and pleased so far.

Oh and then these happened :

It's like an addiction!!!! I cut the stem down on "Swoop's" flying stem because I wanted him closer to the ground about to engulf a hapless Epirian victim. Stem is a bit unstable at the moment while glue still not fully set, so will re-assess later. I suspect a big chunk of cork and lots of PVA may stabilise it enough

You won't want to see this then

4 minnows constructed and WIP of their bases.

Honest moment here. Like the minnow sculpts and the blissful ease of obstruction. Hate the hex bases though. From day 1 I was troubled by the use of different base shapes for the fliers in MEdge, but understand the rules rely on knowing the front and back arcs. I think a different solution could have been formulated. I'm not a gamer sadly and definitely not a rules-smith, but as a hobbyist I am uneasy at the lack of consistency between all units. I know in the Rulebook there is the allowance for base changes, but I would rather know the minis are all legal and there will be no quibbles if ever get to play a game.

So this is why I am modding the bases as much as possible in an attempt to disguise the variation as much as possible

No more models now. I am going to finish the bases properly after the glue has dried on these core cork elements then prime them all in one go. Considered doing it tonight but it's freezing out there!!!!

I don't think you need to fear issues with changing those hex bases into 25mm ones. The book explicitly says it's permitted, no "opponent's permission" and what not. As long as the arcs have markings it's legal. Cork works too though!

I know you can, but I haven't got anywhere near enough spare to meet the condition that if you do change all similar models must be in the same base type. I may just go and do it down the line. I'll see how I feel later

So priming done.

Gotta say........

.......when I picked up the primed Angel I did fall in love a bit. These sculpts are beautiful. I have no idea how I am going to pull off the paint scheme.

I'll resort to the bases first to give me a goal to work towards (and put off messing these guys up)

I do love the look of those minis. Even if I don't get into Medge properly, I still might pick up an angel or two and a pack of minnows to run in generic sci-fi skirmishes. The bases are looking great too!

Loving the cork basing, it contrasts very nicely with the smooth lines of the Angels. That craggy rock landscape is very reminiscent of the locations in the novels where Wynn first encounters a Mature Angel. Looking forward to seeing them with paint on them!

Thanks Darrkespur. Not sure what you are going to think of these now though I like starting by finishing the bases first so that when the mini is done, they can be presented straight away. Also it means that I can see the fluff of the mini to help me make sure the colour scheme fits. I wanted snowy bases for once having never used this basing style for an army and just wanting to for a change. I'd planned on making the cork bases in to ice shards of fjords originally before cutting them up and the rock crawler angel's base was going to be ice shards. Then Januine happened to suggest painting the bases as rock with snow over them. Immediately I saw the potential, but only on the condition that the rocks were brown - every other army I have are on some form of grey rock or grey/black Tarmac!!!

So here we go, let me know what you think:

0 - Prime black.
1 - Heavily thinned Mournfang Brown to get into most cracks, but not essential that all recessed are painted.
2 - Drybrush with Skrag Brown. Bought the large Citadel drybrush for the larger bases and was overjoyed at how good it was. I used my small Citadel drybrush for the smaller bases.
3 - (Bear with me) Light drybrush with Terminatus Stone. This may confuse some people because it is far too big a leap from the Skrag Brown to work as a light highlight, but that wasn't why it was used. but to me it worked perfectly as a sort of frosty edge on the ground. I actually had to do it a second time when the paint had dried to enhance the look a bit.
4 - So then I selectively used thinned PVA glue on high points or flats to glue the finer snow from the Scale 75 set I bought from www.elementgames.co.uk. The set comes with larger snow crystals too and I plan to use this a bit more with the infantry.
5 - (not pictured) I then used Black paint to paint the edges of the circular and hex bases. I haven't painted the notches like some have - I'm too obsessional about making the army consistent. I do need to find a way to indicate squad groupings on the MEdge models, but haven't cracked that yet.

So there we go. I think they look just as I had hoped, what about you?

Here is a photo of the bases near their intended owners and the two primed Mature Angels are placed on the bases to give some idea of the final look:

Sorry about the rambling post, I find basing tricky, if you get it wrong it doesn't sell the mini enough and snow can look over the top sometimes. Hope this is helpful for some (as long as people like them )

I need to start trialling the purple paint scheme soon. Nervous because I am not sure how it's going to come out. We'll have a look though

I really like how realistically rocky the painted cork looks beneath the snow, it contrasts very nicely.

My space wolf army is snow-based so it's very tempting to do the same with my MEdge stuff, but I think I'm going to resist as yours will look so much better!
