This week Hyacinth Games will begin its third Kickstarter campaign to fund art work and models for the new regional sourcebook of Shangri LA. Set in a post-apocalyptic Southern California, the region of Shangri La was flooded by the Pacific after a series of cataclysmic earthquakes. The lucky, and well-connected survivors, fled to the area's mountains while the less fortunate fought and died in the deluged cityscape of Greater Los Angeles.

I am personally excited about this project as the writer of the book. It has been a 2-year journey writing this book, and I am looking forward to finally having the opportunity of sharing Shangri LA with the larger gaming community. If you ever wanted to take your post-apoc games onto the water, well, Shangri LA is for you!

Now on to the official pitch...

Shangri LA is an upcoming Wreck Age source book which will give you a plethora of details and background on the fabled floating city that lays isolated on the Washed Coast of the Merikan continent.

The city state of Shangri LA is a coalition of many water-borne communities in Malibu Bay and the surrounding areas, from the lawless Sandy Echo, to the social and economic heart of Shangri LA: the Sphere. Shangri LAs borders span many countless kilometers, and is defended by a volunteer citizen militia. Outsiders are met with disdain and contempt, and all but the most resourceful and renown traders must do business at the far-flung trade posts of the Boneyards, laying deep in the Mojave desert, and connected to the city by a high speed rail line.

The Shangri LA sourcebook book is jam-packed with:

· A history of Greater Los Angeles, including details of the Malibu Quake and local events leading up to the Exodus.

· An Exploration of current-day Shangri La, a reclusive resurgence-era nation built on the flooded ruins of Greater Los Angeles. Told from the point of view of a mysterious agent, and a shady Caravaneer named Gallo.

· Extensive post-Exodus regional events and descriptions, including overviews of the various societies competing for resources along the southern Washed Coast. From the Arhk, to Stitchers, to the the Gente Del Mar, there are many factions vying for power in the area.

· An in-depth examination of Shangri La’s society, culture, economy, and military, as well as the subterfuge and intrigue that’s rife in the various floating communities that make up Shangri LA.

· Gorgeous artwork by industry veterans and up-comers.

· New information on ARHK’s incursions onto the Washed Coast, and their conflict with the Shangrilese militia.

· Details on the mysterious Stitcher cult which rules Shangri LA’s governing council from behind the scenes.

· An introduction to the Fung, an underworld organization who act as middlemen for the body and organ trade which sustains Shangri La’s economy.

· Descriptions and details of the major players in Shangri La and the surrounding areas.

· Floating cities: Shangri La’s great floating cities include: The Sphere, El Monterino and New Port, along with ideas for generating your own floating community.

· Learn about the Bone Yard, an ancient medical hub and Shangri La’s public face, which resides on the outskirts of the ancient I-15 in the arid wastes of the Mojave desert.

· A hobby section: giving you ideas for how to make your own floating terrain and boats.

…and much more!

Wreck Age provides you with seamless rules integration - allowing you to play a pen and paper RPG, a 28mm tabletop skirmish game, or a hybrid of both!

Shangri LA introduces this exciting new setting to the Wreck Age universe. This sourcebook comes complete with background that can be integrated into campaign play, as well as a variety of encounters, structures, and new equipment can help you jump right into the action in Mist City,

On top of artwork for the book we hope to raise funds for some exciting new miniatures that can be used in your games. Because Shangri La examines communities living on or near the Pacific, watercraft are an important means of transportation in the region and we would like to bring some post-apoc watercraft to life.

Included are some concept drawings of the watercraft we'd like to fund and give an indication of the types of vessels seen zipping about the waters of Shangri La's Angel's Bay.

Jet ski:

Junk:

We also have ideas for a fan boat and catamaran. I will post concept art for those in the next few days as we get closer to launch day on Friday February, 19th. If you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them.

Thanks for reading!

I have some of the wreck-age models (Reclaimers) and they're quite nice . Will certainly check this out, although I'm not sure what I'd do with boat minis!

Having seen some of the greens for the upcoming miniatures, the range is going to expand with some really neat options.

For those familiar with Wreck Age's factions, Shangri La will focus on the mysterious Stitchmen, the body harvesting physicians who sustain themselves indefinitely on stolen organs and other bodily tissues.

Here is another preview of a Shangrilese watercraft, this time a fan boat:

Congrats John, the KS is rounding third after less than a day!

I was an outsider on this project but it was a lot of fun (and inspiring) to dip into the dropbox files here and there to see the progress you and Anton were making.

Post collapse fanboats are awesome and I am glad they might become a reality.

Thanks, Matt! It was a fun process, and I too hope that post collapse fanboats become a thing. I want a whole fleet of rusty, chain-covered boats.

Apprecitate the support, Matty! Though, if you saved up that much from a sober January allow me to point you towards the $1,500 pledge.

Speaking of rusty boats. In case anyone missed this in the paint and modeling section, here is a modeling project I started in association with this Kickstarter. It should give everyone an idea of what a typical Shangrilese pirate craft looks like.

I might have to back this. There's not a whole lot of options (read: none) for post-apoc 28mm watercraft and I think these all look really nice. Maybe when it gets closer to the $5000 mark so I can back for the 3 craft + Catamaran. And for $5 one of the floating terrain add-ons is a bit of a no brainer. Might even get two

Yeah there aren't many wet post collapse settings, maybe because everyone is terrified of being connected to Waterworld? Hey, it was better than the Postman.

I have some greens to share.

The first is the child Daph. She is the charge of Gallo, who is the narrator of the source book. Daph was found by Gallo surviving on her own in a small trading town in what used to be Arizona. A resourceful young girl with a penchant for fire and sharp objects, Daph acts in a supporting role in games of Wreck Age, able to move quickly from cover to finish off injured opponents with her collection of knives.

We have two sculpts of Daph available, one in a running pose and one crouching.

Next we have a Fung agent. The Fung are the human middlemen for Shangri LA's Stitcher community. Not only acting as intermediaries for their Stitchmen masters, the Fung also manage the black market slave and organ trade that exists within the reclusive nation. Favored agents receive augmentation from their masters, and this specimen has an additional limb to assist in wielding its tech-maul.

Finally, we have Rhea, the head of Shangri LA's Stitcher cult, and the oldest Stitcher in the region. The master surgeon is paranoid, despite making its lair under the cold waters of Malibu Bay and frequently alters its form in order to placate its irrational fears. Rhea most often presents itself as a hairless, emaciated being with a mechanical uterine sac grafted to its flesh, often along the abdomen or back. Rhea appears androgynous, but desiccated and weak. Rhea’s hairless body is shriveled from lack of muscle use and loose flesh hangs listless from its torso and arms. Rhea’s face with sharp, angular features give a raptor-like countenance to the otherwise silently contemplative creature. When active, Rhea moves with an economy of movement so precise that it is often mistaken for grace. In total control of its nervous system, every flicker of Rhea's muscles is calculated and deliberate. However, Rhea’s neural implants allow it to control the various machines scattered throughout its laboratory so Rhea rarely choose to move. Instead, this bald, pregnant waif sits hunched and motionless for days at a time in a pressurized chamber isolated from the rest of its massive subterranean laboratory through layers of transparent steel and thick, ballistic and pressure resistant glass.

We have two versions of Rhea available. Either would also make a fine generic Stitcher for your games set outside of Shangri LA.

We are only $95 dollars from funding, and 1/3 of the way towards unlocking a free novella about Gallo, Daph and the journey from Arizona's wastes to the border of Shangri LA!

I am happy to say we are funded!

Thanks to everyone who has backed so far. We are now moving on to stretch goals, and the first one is about 1/3 of the way met. If we hit 100 backers each backer will receive a free story about the characters of Gallo and Daph. If you are on the fence put $2 down so we can unlock that story and see for yourself if you want to dive into the murky waters of Shangri LA!

Thanks again everyone.

Hey guys!

We are nearing our second stretch goal and we have added a free download link on the Kickstarter page for the Wreck Age quick start rules. Check out the Kickstarter page to download the free rules.

I will also be posting some new terrain and some additional background material for Shangri LA in this thread over the next few days. I've been slowed down by a hand injury that occurred a week ago which has impacted my painting. Guess I shouldn't handle knives in the kitchen.

More soon!

Hello everyone.

We are in the final stretch of the campaign and we are close to unlocking a few stretch goals!

I wanted to post some recently finished terrain associated with this setting book--which also provides a great excuse to post some excerpts from the book detailing aspects of Shangri LA's culture.

In the floating communities of Shangri LA dry space is at a premium, and most residents live in cramped conditions with multiple bodies sharing a single tent or container-stack apartment. The shack above represents a single-person residence which would likely be found precariously linked to other such residences via walk-ways of planks and rope. Such an individual would be fairly well-to-do to afford an isolated shack free from prying neighbors.

Another indicator of the resident's wealth is the freshly applied swath of painted art-work adorning the side of the structure. Such art is prized among the middle and upper classes of Shangri LA as a sign of status.

Bottles of medicinal agua dulces, or "sweet waters". Sourced from the purified lakes in the San Bernardino Mountains, sweet waters are infused with pharmaceutical-grade narcotics and are used by residents to treat all manner of infliction from inflamed muscles and bacterial infections to boredom.

Enjoy some excerpts from the source book.

Agua dulces:
Made from the purest water available in the region, agua dulces are sourced at Big Bear Lake which utilizes a sophisticated filtration system first used to restore the lake three centuries ago. This system underwent overhaul during the RSA-era, and continues to operate through the ingenuity and dedication of teams of trained technicians overseen by Reclaimer Clerics who have maintained the system for the last 80 years. Starting with such clean water allows the addition of medicinal additives with a range of treatment options. Most popular are Agua dulces for common ailments like colds, sore muscles, and gastric distress. More sophisticated agua dulces can anesthetize which are prized both by crude local surgeons and drug addicts looking for the next high. Due to the value associated with agua dulces it is not uncommon for counterfeit product to find its way into the marketplace. Often these knock-off agua dulces are little more than common, often irradiated, water. Because of the damage to their trade reputations such faux-waters can bring, sanctioned Bone Yard caravaneers are always hunting for leads on counterfeiting operations and have openly engaged in conflict with counterfeiting gangs. If a gang gets too successful in their scheme a multi-alum force of Civil Defense militia will be dispatched to ensure operations cease.

Paint Culture:
Graffiti covered building materials salvaged from the ocean floor inspired a cultural preference for painted buildings that persists throughout Shangri LA to this day. Many of the structures erected on the decks of rusting sea vessels, or cobbled together on the side of an ancient cracked highway, contain colorful artwork that bears a visual ancestry with graffiti designs. Names of revered family members and even pictorial family histories adorn the sides of residences. For merchants, loud and expressive advertisements or slogans are often displayed along their storefront’s outer walls. The artisans who create these murals are revered within their community, and competitions are often held to determine the best “tag” in each hub, county, and ultimately, the nation. Troupes of artists ply the internal trade routes of Shangri LA offering their services to communities across the region. Interestingly, the more successful troupes even have their artwork recognized and “followed” by admirers who undertake journeys across Shangri LA to view a particular troupe’s creations. Considered a sort of domestic tourism, the association of a troupe with such aficionados can greatly increase the asking rate for that troupe’s tagging services. Further, color trends exist by region and shift every few seasons. For the socially competitive members of Shangrilese society, living in a residence or running a business with outdated tags can be nearly as damaging to reputation as contracting an illegal disease.

Thanks for looking and a big thanks to everyone who has helped make this campaign a success!

The hardcover Wreck Age rule book is still being worked on, and since the game is growing it will include expanded rules (using vehicles in the game, community expansion rules and some new factions) and will likely be released later this year.

For backers of the 1st KS campaign that pledged for the hardcover my understanding is that they received refunds when the hardcover was delayed. If you have additional questions about the hardcover I'd recommend sending an e-mail to Hyacinth Games since I began writing for them well after that campaign ended, so my knowledge is limited.

Also in the pipe are some additional setting books--one that details Mexico City during the resurgence and another that examines Chicago. 2016 should be a good year for mucking about in the Post-Collapse wastes!

Thanks, that means a lot! A water-themed Necromunda table would be incredible to play on. I hope you give in to the inspiration and make that happen.

Also, if you're interested, grab the free quick-start rules and use your Necromunda figures to play Wreck-Age!

If you like it you'll have even more reason to build that table!

Hello everyone.

I wanted to share the post-campaign update and thank everyone on here for their interest and support in this book.

For anyone attending Adepticon next weekend stop by the Hyacinth Games booth. They will also be running a Wreck-Age game on a pretty bad-ass Shangri LA themed water/city-ruin table.

And the big take away for me from this update is resin boats will be a thing very soon!

Thank you all!

Thanks so much for pledging your support to Shangri LA. We're gearing up for Adepticon (adepticon.org) so if you're in the Chicagoland area next weekend, please stop by and get some games in with us. We'll be sending out backer surveys and everything else after we return from that. We have some more art trickling in and we are hoping to finish production on Shangri LA sometime in late April, and then send it off to the printers (and get PDFs out to those who pledged for that). Models will be in hand next week, and we're looking to have everything fulfilled rather quickly. The resin boats are the only thing still not in production yet, but those will be coming soon after Adepticon.

Thanks again! See you in the Wilds.

We had a really fantastic time this year! So many dice, ideas, and games were tossed around.

We'll be moving into our production phase, and we're happy to announce that the printing will now be full-color (or colour for our English friends). Very happy for this to be hitting the printer. We're anticipating about 30-45 days before we send the files to the printer, and then a few weeks from there before we ship. All of the minis are completed, and the boats are in process.

More very soon!

Some big news in this post-Adepticon update. The book will now be printed in full color! Also, even though the boat stretch goals weren't met the models are currently being developed and will see release soon.

I am working on another terrain project while waiting for the Shangri LA book to be printed and thought I'd share my progress here.

Much like the floating shack shared earlier in the thread, this project will feature a floating structure. However, unlike the single shack, this will actually be a floating apartment stack comprised of old shipping containers and salvaged boat parts.

The courtyard of the apartment complex will take the form of this barge.

I filled the inside of the barge with sand and it will be painted up to represent fertile earth used to grow plants. This courtyard will act as a community garden for the apartment complex and will feature rows of corn, pumpkins, broccoli and cauliflower.

There will also be other boat parts grafted to the barge. The white pieces below will be worked into the model once I build up more of the supporting superstructure.

More pictures to come as the model takes shape. Ultimately I hope to have this be piece of terrain able to support game play. There will be walkways and space throughout the apartment to position figures and engage in mortal combat as is fitting for Shangri LA's violent culture.

A small update.

The foundation of the shipping crate-apartment stack has been laid, and basic painting has begun. My plan is to get the foundation painted and finished before working on the upper sections of the apartment unit.

The flat sections will ultimately hold shipping crates and I plan to build additional rooms and walkways around those crates.

I had some down time while the model was drying so I painted up a pool table that will find its way into the apartment complex's rec room.

An update, the floating farm is finished.

This project went from being a potential apartment complex made up of cargo crates to a farm residence. I used an O-scale railroad barge kit as the foundation of the farm, and used plastic card to expand the structure and make the walls/roofs.

In the Shangri La setting, this farm would represent a community that had banded together and pooled their resources in order to raise their standard of living. As a result this community has access to some luxuries not found in a lot of post-Collapse settlements including a recreation room with pool table:

As well as a functional lavatory with bathtub to maintain proper hygiene. The toilet and tub models are from Dakka's very own Dr. H!

More floating structures to come! I plan on building enough terrain to cover a 6x4' table.

Thanks! Glad you liked the farm. Keep an eye out, there are a bunch of new post-apocalyptic goodies coming out for Wreck Age in the next few months.

Below is an update from the Kickstarter regarding the resin boats that were part of this campaign:

Just a quick update to show everyone some mock-ups of the watercraft. These are NOT the final versions and will be in resin, not MDF, but these are being used for scale and general shape. We are really happy with the progress on these, and we hope to be able to show you more on these soon. We've seen some of the work on the resin pieces, and it looks fantastic. We'll be showing more soon, as this aspect of the project progresses a little more.

Again, the final boats will be resin, but these MDF mock ups are simply being used to determine the overall size of the final models. Still, they are coming a long and will be a nice addition to the Wreck Age line, as well as useful for other post-apoc settings that need watercraft.

We just sent the book to print, and should have it in a few weeks.

We'll begin sending out all the PDFs to people sometime next week, so look for the links for that in your inboxes very soon.

We're very excited to have this done and to get it into your hands. It ended up being 116 pages, and we'll also be sending everyone an additional supplemental book with the rules and scenarios very soon. We wanted to do it this way, so that we could come as close to meeting our promises to you as possible, even though it will be at additional expense to us.*

Boats are coming along as well, and we hope to have something to show you on that front either late next week, or the week after.

As always, thank you for your continued support, and we'll see you in the Wilds!

I have some more Wreck Age terrain in the works.

Currently I am building a multi-storey floating apartment unit. It consists of storage container apartments along side scraped together structures.

Below is a ramshackle residence cobbled together from salvaged materials pulled from the sea. There are some luxuries present in the space notably a kelp-rope bed, deer skin rug and steel tankard. This room will be the penthouse of the multi-storey structure.

The tin roof still needs to be weathered, but otherwise the room is finished. The roof will stay detachable for gaming purposes.
