Hi all,

Completely new to hordes and never played a game in my life.
However, after doing some reading I've been drawn in and wanted to make a start.

I've decided I wanted a warbeast heavy army and from what I can see, legion do this the best.

I have the plastic starter box on its way as a beginning, but wondering where to go from here?

Want to get to 25 points as a basic list, but as I say, I'm new to the whole game.
So, where should I go from the starter box please?
Want to focus primarily on warbeasts.

Thanks in advance.

Legion have a few good units that can sort of...help out with the warbeast love without adding a bunch of dudes to your list, if that makes sense. They have the pot, and while it adds some dudes it also keeps adding warbeasts all game until it's dead! (in most match ups). Additionally things like Ogrun Warspears, while they are dudes, they're big meaty guys so might fit well with beasts?

As for specific things, I'd look at maybe another caster, I feel the lylyth you have likes at least some infantry. If you like ranged beasts look into eLlylyth or eVayl I'd say, melee beasts go pVayl, eAbby or pThagrosh maybe?

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

The pot seems pretty essential and from what I've read, the basic caster from the box isn't amazing, so I may swap out for eThagrosh instead.

Ogruns fit the bill fine too.

I just wanted to move into hordes and away from WHFB and 40k as I'm fed up of painting 100+ models per army.
So looking for a small, elite beast like army instead.

The main draw to legion is the mass beasts as from what I've read, nothing in hordes or warmachine comes close to legion in terms of beasts/jacks.

So hoping legion can fit the bill on this one.

Now this is for 50 points, I have less experience against them at 25...

There are a lot of legion lists using big battlegroups. Because I'm not half asleep I can be more useful now ha. For melee-centric beast builds, I've had my teeth kicked in by eThagrosh and eAbby quite a bit. eThagrosh involved a couple of Scytheans, Raeks, stuff like that. The eAbby list was 2-3 Scytheans, 2-3 Raeks, Shredder, support staff, and maybe the sniper solos? Either way they were both impressive lists.

Shootier lists have included eLylyth with a bunch of guns, eVayl with gun and melee beasts (Ravagore and Angleius) but one unit of, say, Raptors or something similar, so it's not all beasts.

Thragoth may be worth a go.
I'm assuming the Epic version is the Messiah one?

Still new to this so working alot out.
They sum him up as capable of wrecking most things if he needs to, but to avoid combat if possible as he is pretty much made of glass.

Raeks always seem to be run in pairs from what I've seen, so 2 of those seems to be a must.
I've also seemed to notice that people who run them don't really use angelius either, so looks as if those 2 are personal preference.

Scytheans seem to be the big hitters and are much needed for wrecking jacks and heavies.

My only concern is a friend plays skorne and runs a bronze back like religion.
So I'm guessing it's a case of shoot it off the board as it hits like a freight train.

Careful shooting it, if you're too close you will only get a few shots before he's in combat, which is bad. Hyper Aggressive and counter charge is an amazing plan wrecker.

I probably won't be much help for legion v skorne, having never played either, sorry.

That's fine, just trying to work out a battle plan to remove it quickly.
Combat wise I have nothing that can go toe to toe with it.

Just didn't want to get caught out by it.

Might run an army as normal and see how it goes though, may be able to kill it or atleast work around it.

The key thing to remember against the bronzeback is threat ranges. Your scythean has an 11" threat range (6"move+3"charge+2"reach melee) versus the bronzeback having a threat range of 7.5" (4"move+3"charge+0.5" melee). While true that the BB can have its charge range extended by rush (titan gladiator animus, +2" move), this still only gives it a 9.5" threat range meaning that you can charge him before he can charge you. There are a couple of spells that skorne have access to that can extend threat ranges but they are very obvious.
A Scythean will one-round a bronzeback, especially under Manifest Destiny, and if you charge to max melee range and use eThagrosh's feat to pull back after then you should be able to back up out of range of his other beasts.

I'm also a new player wanting to run a large battlegroup legion list. So far my only model is Azrael because he looks awesome! Anyone have suggestions for other warbeast warrant to run along side him as well as which Warnock to use with him and lots of other beasts?

Get Shepherds. And Forsaken.

One allows you to force beasts outside your Warlock's Control Range, while the other allows for Fury management outside that same range and is called a 'tactical nuke' for a reason. . .

I don't read many blogs, (though bogs and podcasts are great for learning) but this guy is a pretty good (cygnar) player who does a state of the game type post about once a month.

What he puts up as sample lists are what you might see as a homogenized top tier or at big events. That being said, if you're not sure what you want to build (thematically or otherwise), the sample lists give you an idea for what are some of the most used synergies right now.

For legion specifically, you can see 3 different beast heavy lists, so take from that what support is being used, and what's a common, repeated choice of beast.

Personally, my last pairing was epic twins and Abby2 (who i replaced with Fyanna2 when she came out). I would suggest playing a warlock you like in a single list for a while, and only tweak a couple of things at a time. As you figure out your list weaknessess you can expand into a 2nd warlock that covers those matchups.

Making a TAC list is fine, but due to skews and synergies, you'll always have some hard matchups. Trying to make one warlock into a good matchup vs everything will drive you crazy, so while you shouldn't feel pressured to get a ton of models and warlocks quickly, if you're stuck in a rut you might not be doing anything wrong.
