Questing is treacherous business, and no one knows more acutely than the heroes and villains taking part in fantasy live action role playing (LARP) events. Luckily for their fictional personas, there are healing spells and potions in case of injury. But should their real-world selves get hurt during the game, these miracle salves have no effect. Fortunately, the real world has LARP insurance.

The practicalities of LARPing.

To the topic, back when I larped, I had this problem running events. Some sites required insurance and it was damn near impossible to get at the time.

Eh, I never understood the point of LARPing. I love me some D&D and video games, but LARPing always seemed lame.

Now if I was to do something like this, it'd be full contact medieval contact

It is an excuse to spend a day or weekend with friends hitting each other, drinking and otherwise geeking out.

It's all geekdom. Some is just more "out in the open" that other formats.

Looks like fun, but I would have to pass.

Maybe I could dress in my Star Trek uniform and then pretend I was on an away mission.

With foam bats? Meh. I'd rather go paintballing or play lasertag. LARPing always seemed like a poor man's version of gladiators. If I'm going to dress up as a knight, I want something where I can get hurt, dammit!

I can do that without the need to go outside. 40k and d&d require much less had eye coordination. D&d doesn't even require me to navigate a table full of minis, and I can do it sitting down. Much more drinking friendly than larp.

Oddly my hobbies seem to be no alcohol (cycling, motorbikes) or very alcohol friendly (RPGs, boardgames). No inbetweens for me.

Also, LARPing doesn't allow for nachos and the like, which can easily be done during 40k or D&D

Well, our guys (and gals) don't actually LARP but a couple of our private summer CONs back we did dress up for roles in a Call of Cthulhu game. It was actually quite fun, and inspired us to keep up the RP while on breaks too.

And ofc, Vampire... If one had been there the largest local Vampire LARP had some great characters that people still talk about. Not because of the dress but because of great roleplaying. The stuttering, drawling monologues of the noble-born and noble-born again Prince were supposedly both terrifying and entertaining.

I went to a Vampire LARP in the late 90's and it was pretty damn cool. There were a few oddballs, but the majority of folks were friendly and really having a good time with their characters. At the time I was still in high school so I couldn't make the game a regular occurrence (it was a roving game and I didn't drive, plus the costuming was beyond my budget).

I'd still prefer table top RPGing to LARPing, but I can see the appeal of LARPing especially if a group of friends/family played together.

Exactly. My friends and I used to do this all summer long. There was a group of about 12-16 of us, and we'd do pitched battles until we were exhausted. Only two people cared about "quests". The rest of us just wanted to get good exercise, beat each other, and be last man (or team) standing. I took home a large number of wins, myself, even winning a tournament for a "magic" sword. The guy who ponied it up for the winner to keep turned around a month later and demanded I give it to him, changing his mind because he didn't like me. I told him to get stuffed.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

You need to avoid the Tau Stealth Cadre versus Predators events.

This is what I do. Privately owned land, fires and songs, participating in 100/200 a side fighting. Amazing set pieces with awesome people.

That is LARP at it's finest.

I LARP with a group that rents out entire group campgrounds, and then runs events that run 24 hours a day from Friday night to Sunday morning. I have had combats in pouring rain, in two-foot snow the second week of January, and have been woken up at 4am by bandit attacks where I had to fight barefoot and barechested in March because I couldn't get my armor on in time. Our events are all strung together in a living world, rather than tiny combat scenes. We sometimes have to deal with consequences from a scene two or three events later.

It's awesome fun, and forming effective teams under pressure is a great feeling.
