I have been paint up some chaos hounds that I have painted with various colours. I have done drybrushing with those with a lighter coloured coat, however when I tried this technique with those with a darker coat (doombull brown) it made it look very funny – the lighter paint almost look a pink colour and so didn’t look like a highlight.

I was wondering whether if anyone had any advice about this? I wasn’t sure whether highlighting darker colours in this way is always a bit dicey, or alternatively whether more care has to be taken to ensure that the paint used for the highlights is only slightly lighter than the basecoat (relative to when using a lighter base coat).

What colours are they specifically?

If you drybrush a light colour over a brown that has a reddish tinge, or your drybrush colour itself has a reddish tinge, sometimes the drybrushing can come out looking a bit pinkish.

In general it's often a good idea to work your way up with drybrushes, drybrush some intermediate colours to build up the effect toward your lightest colour, rather than just going for your lightest colour over your darkest colour straight off.
