Ahh, I've spent many hours with Sonic, finding all the hidden bits and seeing just how many lives I can build up.
Never played Zaxxon or Golden Axe though...

I also missed diablo and all it's sequels for some reason, I was deep into Oblivion before I'd even heard about them.
Before Oblivion my PC gaming was all FPS games and still is mostly (so I even missed Morrowind and it was a friend that introduced me to Oblivion).
But the freedom and "collecting" elements of Oblivion (and then FO3, FO-NV and now Skyrim) largely spoiled any other "shorter" games.

My console gaming on the other hand, is largely racing games (Gran Turismo and Wipeout) and platformers.

for a strange reason i haven´t played that many steampuny games... or even any...?

Do you run out of steam before getting to them...?

oh my... the typo gremlins are onto me again^^

somehow racing never ever did it for me...i get way too frustrated by the outcome of any racing game... and i donk´t even drive in RL.... tried it... but my teach said... not everybody is a born pilot...d´oh...well to be frank... living in berlin you seldom really need a car...
and i played some FPS games... but i often get seasick due to some effects... somehow my brain can not handle the 3D effects so well...i get dizzy and even puke...(yep, it has happned due to duke nukem for instance or even halflife...)

so mostyl i play strategy games... like jagged alliances and RPGs... and of course the great biog slavemaker WOW...but i am clean now^^

I couldn't leave that one alone considering what's been happening here over the last couple of pages.

I can get frustrated by racing games, but not nearly as much as beat-me-ups (I even broke a controller because of SFII and M. Bison), But I prefer the tinkering and perfecting a lap time rather than head-to-head racing (the other cars just get in the way ). I do enjoy driving irl as well, so maybe that's the difference. My driving instructor once told me that I didn't "need to try and do 0 - 30mph in 2sec every time"...

I can see how that might put you off those kind of games...

I can't really get into strategy games, usually because I get wiped out by the computer on the easiest settings
I really enjoyed Dune II as it was so easy and the AI was stupid. After that, all those games just got too hard

and I didn't get into WOW due to the paying monthly thing to play a game I've already paid for Seemed like a rip-off to me.
also I'm one of the (few, it seems) people that like to get away from real life with computer games so tend to only play single-player games (or ones where you sit next to the person you're playing with) and avoid games where there's real people in there with you.

i started strategy games when tank rushes in red alert still very possible.. those were the days
and it tok me quite a bit of nerve to start a mmorpg...but after a short time it was like here on dakka... you meet peeps that are good company

or total jerks...( here and there^^)

and i strated it all on an old atari console way back... and i smashed and stomped and hurt that poor controller more than anyone should know about me... and do you remember summer games? there were joystick killer games... and belive me... i am guilty of murdering quite a few of them

Oh, joystick killers, yeah. I think we had a Daley Thompson game (a little before my time) that left the joystick on our Amstrad (one with a tape deck in the keyboard) a little worse for wear.

Not where I should be

Gods seems funny reading you guys talking about games.

Totally remember most everything you guys are talking about, I started out with a zx81, now thats old school.

For just driving have you tried Testdrive Unlimited. i spent weeks and weeks just getting in a Aston Martin and driving around Hawaii Just for fun.

Oblivion has to be the best game ever. Think I will have to reinstall that.

I used to play a MMORPG called Everquest, now that was a game. once sat 17 hourrs in a chair and did not move for anything playing that.

But fondest memorry is Daley Thompson Decathlon on Atari 2600. I used to go to a friends to work out. 3 blokes working out intensive training weightlifting for 2-3 hours. Arms would be dead by end of it. Then he pulls out that bloody joystick of doom and trying to do 1500m takes on a whole new meaning in pain.

Thank you both.

LOL I remember Decathlon on the 2600! I lost all feeling in my index finger one night because of that game, I didn't think i'd get it back :-) racing games I am the worlds most sucky player, and seeing as I only own a 13 year old PS2 that I use as my dvd player the only racer I enjoyed was Auto Modelista, loved the cartoon look to it! the only game I could say I was hooked on all these years was another 2600 game we all know and love! Cam: We had a spectrum that was already pretty much collecting dust by the time I got into computer games, the amstrad was the first games machine I used.
I have tried a few different driving games, but I only really get into them when I can modify and tweak settings and then improve my lap times. Although creating mayhem in Driver or Carmageddon can be a lot of fun every now and then.

NF: I'm still using a PS2 to get my Gran Turismo fix. Although I did go through a Mario Kart Wii phase for a while until I'd got at least a star on all the cups. Sadly I've completed all the Wipeout games I have (really liked the Zone mode in Fusion), will have to go back to those one day though (or get a more up to date one when I get a newer console).

Not sure if I could go back to Oblivion after Skyrim (on which I have a few mods to make it even more pretty).
There are things that were changed for the better in Skyrim and some things that I miss from Oblivion... But I have pretty much been everywhere and done everything in both of them... I'll go back one day once the memory fades a little.

In other news: There isn't much. But I will try and get some modelling back into my modelling thread soon.
I have actually done a bit of work on the vent for Axe #6.3, so I can show that once I've finished tinkering with it.

Done a bit of putty work.
I've added a few more hands, as seen on the previous one, and managed to get these on with minimal squashing and no cracking.

I tried to add some putty as guards on a couple of them, but was very difficult to get it to sit right on the sword which is why it looks rubbish at the moment.
I will have at it with the scalpel later and see what I can make of it, but it's just as likely to break and I'll start again.
This was the reason that my first sword (on the Dire Avenger) had a guard made from plastic carved pieces. May resort to this for these...

Also tried to enclose the vent on axe #6.3 (you can actually see it in this photo) with card, but I wasn't happy with how it looked so that's come off and I'll leave the vent without a surround.

i have thought a bit about your pressmoulding the hand... have you thought about using GS for the actual pressmould instead your milliput? it would be more bendy and thus more likley to allow you some more natual wielding poses?

Made in gb
Mastering Non-Metallic Metal

I have thought that it would probably be easier with GS as I've read numerous times that it's better for more organic shapes than milliput. But I don't have any GS at the moment, maybe if these really don't work out then I may have to invest in some...

I've only really got to make one perfect (or at least serviceable) hand for the model and I'm done.

i didn´t mean to suggest using it for the actual hand model... more for the mold... thus you could wrap the mold more easily over the handle then...

but if you are about to invest... then maybe that stuff you can reuse again (forgot the name silly me) would be even better?

Made in gb
Mastering Non-Metallic Metal

Oh, I see. I'm doing the hand moulding separately and then sticking and bending the new hand to the sword. Moulding it directly onto the sword would be even easier in theory.

I know what you mean and I do have my eye out for some. Instant-mold or something Japanese....*taps into internet*...Oyumaru. Will definitely get some when I find some money burning a hole in my pocket...

Its great and you can make your moulds what ever size you need.

Briancj is running a contest on his blog here

 Briancj wrote:
Updated Rules, removed references to newbies, clarified suggested bits, adjusted one point category to award points to people whose entries are easy to duplicate.

------------

All right, let's crank this baby up.

WAFL* Contest! Everyone loves waffles, right?

Please spread this around on your plogs. Thanks.

--------------

The prizes:

The ORIGINAL Nuka Cola machine that started the =]L[=.
A giant bag of bits and stuff. Seriously. Epic. Even I don't know what'll be in it. But I'm stripping down my collection to focus on Minotaurs and IG.
Way OOP GW Posters!

The contest theme:

Discarded treasure. I am on a major recycling kick in my life. Recycling, freecyling, upcycling. Reduce and reuse. And it drives me insane when I throw away what should be perfectly good materials!

The rules:

You must create a piece of terrain the size of a CD/DVD. The terrain must utilize leftover modelling supplies. Examples of this are paint pots, plastic sprues, discarded packaging, and leftover plasticard. The debris of completed projects, normally placed into the dustbin. The terrain must be usable in a game of Warhammer 40K, but there are bonus points for making items usable in more than one game system. Multiple terrain pieces ARE allowed, as long as, collectively, they are the size of a CD/DVD. They should also maintain a similar theme (IE: You've taken four 40mm bases and built 4 jungle-themed objective markers). There is no required terrain type, the goal is to show people how to recycle things they would normally throw away into usable game terrain.

While there is no height restriction, consideration for newbie players and/or workability on the battlefield should be kept in mind.

Scoring:

A maximum score of 100 is possible. Ties will be broken by the judges. If the judges are deadlocked, I will call upon readers of this plog to vote. If THAT deadlocks, I'll declare a tie, and divide up the prizes appropriately.

Competition requirements:
These are not cumulative. A few bitz used to enhance the terrain does not count toward percentage, but loading up your entry with bitz (instead of recycled parts) will not score high. Imagine you're a new modeler, and you have a few leftovers from your initial purchases.
Entry is 25% recycled materials or less - 0 points
Entry is around 50% recycled materials - 10 points
Entry is around 75% recycled materials - 25 points
Entry is around 100% recycled materials - 40 points

Modeling:
These points ARE cumulative. A focus on techniques and designs that are easy to copy/emulate will score more points, here. You're helping the masses make terrain. A unique entry might be something that makes the judges go 'ah-ha, that's a GREAT idea'. This is where you can score points for originality of design and making a cool scene or mini-diorama.
Entry is easy for a newbie to duplicate - 10 points
Entry shows a unique idea - 10 points
Entry is visually interesting - 10 points
Entry is usable for more than just Warhammer 40K - 10 points

Painting:
Points are not cumulative. Minimum three colors. Washes and highlights to qualify as well painted, at a minimum. Amazingly well painted is something that wows the judges.
Entry is painted - 10 points
Entry is well painted - 15 points
Entry is amazingly well painted - 20 points

-----------

Weight will be given to people who come up with UNIQUE, creative uses for things most people throw away. Things thrown away: bits of dried putty, paint pots, dried paint, sprues, packaging materials, chopped up plasticard.

You may not use existing terrain or other creations, as with all League competitions, show your work. Deadline for entries is August 8th, 2013. Judging will occur a few days later, over the weekend. There will be no extensions allowed, as this is not a complex 'theme'.

Submit your "WiP" photograph ASAP. With your completed photograph, submit an explanation of what you've built, and what materials you used, as if you were writing a short tutorial.

Gits and Graven have agreed to be my judges.

--B.

*What, ANOTHER League contest?

and it wouldn't leave my mind alone due to a single word; "sprue".

So there will be a brief interlude to the sprue weapons in order for me to have a go at...

A SPRUE HUT!!!!

Going to have to pull my finger out and work (relatively) quickly on this...fingers crossed.

Currently, I'm using the tip of my scalpel, sideways and just scratching the surface repeatedly.

I'll investigate a wire brush. Although I'm cutting the sprue in half, length ways, and then doing this on all sides. But a brush would at least do half the work as it wouldn't be possible to use the brush on the "planks" once they're cut this small.
