Wondering Why the Emperor Left

Morning, I'm going to start compiling a bunch of my finished miniatures for my Death Spectres.
So far it's early days but I hope to keep adding and grabbing a few games as well.
Please feel free to give unbiased critiques.
And ask any questions I'll try my best to help.
Cheers

Wow - fantastic stuff. Very well done weathering and dynamic poses. The painting is top notch.

The Death Specters have some great fluff - I'm always hoping GW will expand it one day. Great choice of chapter.

This is the painting style that I wish I could replicate. These miniatures look brilliant, and to me are the perfect mix of grubby and clean

Wonderful brush work - and I'm so pleased to see nicely painted marines who are on standard bases and not twenty meters of marbles or cork, or volcanic stone.

The only thing which seems out of place is the cockpit frame on the flier (plastic dyed red I guess?). That's really the only thing which stands out to me.

Beyond that, these are without reproach.

The brushwork and weathering are top notch!

My only critique is that the red canopy on the flyer is a very jarring break in color and theme. It's not quite the same red, and it really breaks the lines on that portion of the model. I think it would have been better if it were left clear. One possible fix may be to draw the framing elements in the same bone color as the rest of the cockpit.

Really Nice work!

I have to ask, what method did you use to create such a realistic Mud effect?

Really nice work! Black is always a tricky color to make look good and all the weathering on these miniatures really kicks them up to a new level.

Great Work but, I also have to agree about the canopy on the flyer. It being one solid color really takes away from the whole model. Maybe doing the Trim a different color may help some. Or even clear would of been a better choice IMO.

First off thanks for the feedback here, it's the best response I have had here. So I'm doing something right.
The weathering basically makes up for my lack of edge highlighting skills.

The mud effect was done with lifecolour colonial sand and forgeworlds dark earth powder.
I'd like to get a better effect on my next tank though.

And a few of you have mentioned the red canopy, I was cheating. I haven't painted the pilot, he is zenithial sprayed white and the red filters it to look like he is lit up.
I may add the bone color the parts on there.
But that can wait for a day when the army is at a good size.

Once again massive thanks folks. Appreciate the comments and suggestions.

The attention to detail on these miniature is excellent! They really look battle worn and are everything I want my own marines to be

Great work. I have been collecting a Death Spectres army and ordered sholderpads through a 3rd party 3D printing site. Very inspirational work.

I do agree with the canopy from the Stormtalon. The frame around the glass should be painted as it looks a bit incomplete, especially when you look at all the detail work completed on your Rhino.

Thanks for sharing.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Thank you for the feedback on the weathering.
It's something that I feel would happen despite the fluff of their armour is repaired and cleaned to new.
I want to have an in the fight look.
Also it helps me raise my level up a little since my highlighting game isn't strong.

Not much done this weekend however tactical marines 8 and 9 are complete.
Just the sergeant to go.

I think a good fix for that is to paint the support frame some distressed metal look, the thickened bits of clear canopy looks strange.
Actually, it is because the rest of the model is done so well it seems to highlight this area: either the canopy is replaced all the time or it is tougher that the fuselage: no scarring.
I half expected you to drill a hole here and there and spider-web around those.

Ha! people think red is jarring: it IS your accent colour: I would have painted it all green like the old style green CRT monitors. A nice contrasting colour!
PLUS red is how you light military vehicles when you want to preserve night vision.
The glowing red cockpit would freak out the enemy (nevermind make a good target but they ARE marines).

Am I a bad person where I see that cockpit I think this?:

You've got a gorgeous force here. It almost strikes me as more of a skirmish warband given the individual nature of each Marine and your focus on small groups of them in the photography.

superb painting. there's not a single bit of criticism i could give to improve it!

in the fluff, IIRC, Death Spectres have pale white skin and black eyes. why did you choose to paint them in normal skin tones? not a criticism, just interested?

I seem to paint my flesh work dark all the time.
Believe it or not I thought this was pale, I started with kislev flesh instead of my usual bugmans.
Haha so just and accident.... Lets say they've got dirty faces.

Thanks folks this is all great and pushing me on through my next squad.
Although the terminators kit is shockingly static so no extra character for them.
I'll be soon off to watch with these guys so I'll grab a few tabletop shots.
