Subject: Putting together an army list for a complete newbie using the Ghulam infantry as a base?
I've tried in vain with signing up to the Infinity forums but i can't get the activation e-mail, therefore I'm hoping you guys won't mind me picking your brains instead?
A box of Ghulam Infantry landed in my lap recently, I believe they were an unwanted present but I've received orders to kick start a new army at 150pts by a friend, they're really nice minis but I'm a bit lost when it comes to Infinity army list building as I've been out of the loop for a very very long time and I only played demo games way back when anyway.. (several years, crikey that went quick! :( )
I like the look of the Kaplan, Sekban, Druze and Ghovads miniatures along with the Lasiqs and Janissaires but I've no idea if they're any good or have any synergy with what I currently have.
Is it feasible to buy a box of these guys and add a blister or two to have a playable force at the ready? I'll be borrowing the rulebook to pour over shortly but advice from old heads would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for stopping by and thanks in advance for any sagely advice.
Cheers.

Yeah, the official forums can be quite...erm... erratic. To answer your question, yes, it is possible.
Now the wall o' links.
Get the rules, including a nice set of quickstarter rules, scenarios ( in the ITS package), unit profiles and more, here (free) http://infinitythegame.com/archive.php
You could probably start a pretty capable 150 points army by adding a starter box.
Each army has a "vanilla" incarnation, which gets to choose from all of the models for that faction across the miniature range, and a number of "sectorials," which contain subsets of those models that get certain bonuses (like an ability to function together as part of a fireteam).
If you really like Kaplans, and you find yourself digging Sekban and Jannissaries as well, Qapu Khalqi might be the faction for you. You can play your Ghulams in either vanilla Haqqislam or in the QK sectorial.
The vanilla Haqqislam starter box would work well with your Ghulams because the box I think you have only really contains heavier weapons like the Missile Launcher, HMG, Sniper Rifle, etc. and it gives you 3 regular randos (I'm assuming that you're talking about the 4x Ghulam box). The Hassassin Bahram sectorial starter box would actually be a pretty good addition for you, if you wanted to go in that direction, the Fiday, Ragik, Lasiq and Muyib are all solid, and Daylami are really cheap infantry. Of course, the QK box would also be a pretty good addition, giving you a pair of Spitfire-armed models, and a bunch of Hafzas which will become more useful at larger point games.

Bearing in mind that the Jannisary and Naffatun in the current starter box are 'out of date' from a miniature perspective.
Nice models, just don't match the new versions.

If you want Haqqislam always remember to buy a doc for your teams. Play to your strengths.
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Thank you for taking the time out to reply to a newbie like myself and pointing me in the right direction guys, it's greatly appreciated. Red Harvest, The Datasphere, Army Builder and downloadable rules are just too much! You can even sign up to the Datasphere forums so that's a bonus over Corvus Belli's efforts at this point!
Shae-Konnit, I've stumbled across your thread before. It's a great looking service that I may make use of very soon at this point...
Nuggz, I will certainly be starting at 150pts as I'll just be getting to the basics of the game anyway. Thanks to Red Harvest pointing me towards the Datasphere I've looked up QK as you suggested and they seem like the force for me, I love the models (talk about rule of cool!) and I imagine they'll be a bit easier on the newbie than the Hassassins. You're dead on with realizing I have the specialist Ghulam box, no bother though... just means I'll be proxying for a while.
TalonZahn, I'd normally take your hand off at such an offer but as I dwell on a dreary island located between the North Atlantic and the North Sea (UK just to be clear ) I think that postage costs might scupper any potential deals. (You can always PM me the prices of your Haqq stuff if you think otherwise, though!)
Sorry Scrub, that's what you get for not logging out. >_>
blaktoof, Lots of food for thought, thank you for the example army lists. I've been comparing with others I've found online and slowly but surely coming up with my own. Ghulam Lieutenant with HMG sounds like a winning option!
plastictrees. I've since read all about the controversy between old school and updated models in both a size and aesthetic sense, thanks for pointing that out.
Orlanth, Yes, doctors do seem to be a Haqq speciality!
I've also seen that UK based Wayland Games are doing a 50% off RRP for the new HSN3 book if bought with £20 worth of Infinity, meaning a £40 book becomes £45(ish) with the ltd ed mini and a box of Kaplan or similar, pretty tempting! What do you guys think? To this end I've tried working some army lists. Would Kaplan be an ok place to start? Otherwise I think the QK starter looks like a lot of fun as you guys have already suggested.
Near enough identical and definitely looks fun as a painting project, in terms of being a starter army for a bit of 'team deathmatch' to get started with, what do you think? It's gotten as far as being ITS compatible which means it's legal, I suppose. I don't mind if there are any glaring weaknesses as such, just that it'll be a straightforward list to play and learn the game with... if that makes sense?
Anyway, again a big thank you for the replies to my query, the new resources are really brilliant . Except for Scrub, who will always be a goddamn scrub!
