Hawke's World is named for Aloysius Hawke, the captain of the colony ship that discovered it during mankind's age of exploration. The colonists aboard the ship were mostly Merican, and they rejoiced to find such a verdant paradise. There was, however, one small problem- Orks. It wasn't long before the colonists were in a constant war for their survival, and retreated to a number of heavily fortified, mostly subterranean, city-keeps to survive, leaving much of the surface world to the feral greenskins. By the time Old Night fell, the humans of Hawke's World were a highly militarised, rigidly structured society bearing advanced weapons and armour. They never managed to exterminate the Orks entirely, but the presence of the greenskins saved the humans from some of the worst depredations of the Eldar and various other alien races, and the psychic energy given off by the warring tribes blanketed the planet, reducing the number of human psykers, or killing them early through constant exposure to Waaagh! energy.

Morning all! This isn't really a new army, I've had some Eisenkern kicking around for a while now, but I've decided to do something with them. Rules-wise, Militia/Cults 30K list with Survivors of the Dark Age and Warrior Elite. The basic troop in the army has a 3+ save, Ld 8 (9 with a Sergeant) and either a 30" range S4 gun or an 18" range S5 gun, and they roll around in superheavy tanks! What's not to like?

My first purchases- Eisenkern Valkir Heavy Troopers and Eisenkern Valkir Assault Troopers.
These will form the core of the army, the Hawke's World Ironclad. Accompanying them will be some of the basic Stormtroopers as lower-ranking infantry (basically anyone with a 4+ save is a Stormtrooper, anyone with a 3+ is a Valkir)
Each squad of Ironclad will be accompanied by a Medic for that fun FnP.
Command Squad (still to buy) will have a Land Raider Proteus and Grenade Launchers
Squads with the 30" guns will be accompanied by 2 Heavy Weapons dudes with Rotor Cannon, for even more S4 love. Squads with the S5 short range guns gets flamers to accompany them.
Sergeants have Valkir Swords, counting as Power Mauls (Hawke's World never did get true Power Weapons working, these are just big swords)

Currently I'm building 2 squads of 12 (10 base and 2 special weapons), 1 long range and 1 short ranged, and the Force Commander out of the Valkir, and a Medicae detachment and Heavy Weapon teams from the Stormtroopers

Worth mentioning, nothing in this army will be GW if I can avoid it- not for anti-GW hate or anything but to continue the theme. There stuff isn't Imperial

Excellent idea plans for Leviathons?

Thanks EDC and Llamahead

Planning to use leviathans in my imperial knights army, but one might find its way here. Stay tuned...

Also, picked up another 30 Valkir. Hope to get some painting done tonight, pics to follow

Picked up some more Valkir, now reasonably certain I own all the possible Valkir models in the central coast/ newcastle/ hunter region

Rounding out my Grenadier squads, I built a laser-cannon armed Valkir as one of my long range Rotor Cannon soldiers. Unfortunately the heavy weapons set only has 1 of each gun, so I'll need to wait to get more in before I can complete the second rotor cannon and finish the squad.

Started assembling some HQ units to lead, fixing their armour on properly too. The Valkir have the options of armour plates or robes, I went with the extra armour plates as, whilst the robes look cool, they're not very practical for an Ork-infested jungle.
Gave the Platoon Commander some grenade-launcher-toting bodyguards, for extra punch up close. The commander himself has a plasma pistol, refractor field and power maul. In the army anyone with a Valkir sword has a power maul, anyone with a small shield has an invul save, and anyone with a heavy pistol has a plasma pistol. Still need to add a Vox Operator, Standard Bearer and several more Bodyguards, and their transport- a Land Raider Proteus with twin-linked heavy flamers.

Also grabbed some basing stuff as inserts for the bases they come with, going to paint these as overgrown old roads, as the Ironclad either fight offensively to reclaim human settlements lost to the Orks, or defensively to prevent human settlements being overrun in the first place, so the neat cobblestones aren't too out of place

Great stuff are you planning to use the stock Land Raider Proteus or a counts as?

Still thinking on that, Llamahead. I'd ideally like to do a counts-as, more for theme than anything else, but I'll still need to have it match the size, access points, weapon arcs etc as the actual Proteus, so I might end up buying one.

Thanks EDC. I'm planning to do something more like a 40K storm shield for my Force Commander, as after all his buffs n stuff he has a 3++.

Camera's broken for now, but I just picked up a squad of Bolt Action Late War Germans to use as security forces. Fluff as follows:

"Employment in the cities of Hawke's World is through means of contracts, clearly outlining the responsibilities of both employer and employee and further outlining the rights the employee gains by following and completing these responsibilities and duties. These rights encompass accommodation, rations, and occasionally currency for spending. Each contract has a period of service, and a clause for furtherance of contract if required. Only those who have completed their contracts may advance further into positions of greater responsibility.
For those who join the Security and Defence Corps, the first step is as an Internal Security Officer, or ISO. Each ISO is held to a high responsibility of personal pride, health, and presentation. They are expected to lead by example in matters of the law, and to be familiar with their local beat and the people who live there. If asked, they are expected to provide help to their local community, excepting when such activity would prevent them from upholding the law. Additionally, although private citizens are permitted the ownership of single shot projectile weapons, 1st class ISO's are issued repeating handguns and, as well as using them in furtherance of their duties, are expected to be able to form and lead citizen levies if the war outside ever spills into the city."

Expect pics of my first ISO unit to follow soon, along with my first painted Ironclad, hopefully tomorrow or Friday. Enjoy!

So, no painted models....still working on sorting out the paint scheme for the Ironclad, as the first scheme I had sorta fell apart, tiny flames on armour plates are a bit beyond my skills right now. But I do have a couple of shots of Ironclad for different roles:

With a H.E.L (High Energy Laser) rifle (S4 AP- 30" Rapid Fire)

A H.E.L Carbine (S5 AP- 18" Assault 1), Flamer and sword

And the Captain with his Grenade-launching bodyguards

And, last but not least, a single ISO

So it took a while, but I've settled on a colour scheme!

Plan is to have the armour plates highlighted up to a dirty tan colour, with the undersuit in a dark brown or grey, and metal parts done as oiled steel, so all calipers, hydraulics etc. Shoulderpads will be a dark blue, with rank markings painted on. I'll try OSL for the helmets, to give them that Dead Space glow look

Been working on the Ironclad some more. Still only the basecoat though

Going to leave the armour at that level once I've finished edge highlighting all the plates, the undersuit will get some more detail work, thinking grey next

So, still sourcing the transports and trying to find time to paint (around work and everything else I'm currently painting)
Also awaiting a squad of Panzerjager so I can add some ladies to my lighter-armoured forces; as for female Ironclad they exist, but the armour is no different.

This is the current list I'm building to

HQ- Force Commander, Survivors of the Dark Age, Warrior Elite, Master-Crafted Plasma Pistol, Power Maul, Melta Bombs, Digital Lasers, Cyber-Familiar, Carapace Armour, Iron Halo, Planetary Overlord

HQ- Militia Platoon Command Cadre, 4 additional Bodyguards, Carapace Armour, Land Raider Proteus with Twin-Linked Heavy Bolter, Hunter-Killer Missile, Dozer Blade, Auxiliary Drive, Extra Armour, Armoured Ceramite, and Havoc Launcher, all Bodyguards carry Grenade Launchers, Commander has Melta Bombs, Refractor Field, Plasma Pistol and Power Maul

Elites- Auxilia Medicae Unit, 3 additional Medics

Elites- Ogryn Brute Squad with Power Axes, Carapace Armour and 7 additional Ogryns

Troops- Imperialis Militia Grenadier Squad, Lasrifles, Advanced Weapons, 2 Support Grenadiers with Rotor Cannon, Sergeant has Melta Bombs, Power Maul, Hand Flamer, Dedicated Arvus transport

Troops- Imperialis Militia Grenadier Squad, 8 additional Grenadiers, Laslocks, Advanced Weapons, 2 Support Grenadiers with Flamers, Sergeant has Melta Bombs, Power Maul, Hand Flamer, Dedicated Gorgon transport

Troops- Imperialis Militia Grenadier Squad, 8 additional Grenadiers, Laslocks, Advanced Weapons, 2 Support Grenadiers with Flamers, Sergeant has Melta Bombs, Power Maul, Hand Flamer, Dedicated Gorgon transport

Troops- Imperialis Militia Support Squad with Mortars or Twin Heavy Stubbers, 5 additional teams\

Fast Attack- Auxilia Thunderbolt

Fast Attack- Auxilia Thunderbolt

Heavy Support- Auxilia Malcador

I'm thinking these guys as Ogryns, with a head swap. Idea is they're combat engineer teams; they'll have a 3+ save and S6 AP2 attacks

http://shop.prodosgames.com/203-large_default/juggernauts.jpg

What's your thoughts on the list? More dudes? Less dudes, more armour?

Also if anyone can think of a more ogryn-sized exosuit looking model please let me know

Insomnia, tea and plastic crack- what more is there to life?

Quickly built these two, and tested a paint scheme for the lowly ISO's

First off, an Ironclad Major (Militia Force Commander). Her shield is directly linked to the enhanced power pack of her armour. It used to be part of a cannon, I think.

An Ironclad Radio Operator, for the Lieutenant's command squad.

The holographic device on his wrist allows him to control his comm set

And the screen and keyboard on the back ensure that, if he is slain and the comm set still operates, another soldier can use it

Both the Major's and Radio Operator's packs were spare heavy weapon packs I repurposed.

And lastly, a test paint for the ISO's.

I wasn't sure if the same colours from the Ironclad would work, but I'll persevere

The All-Terrain Armoured Crawlers used by the Ironclad were once bulk cargo vehicles. Able to operate on land and sea, they were envisioned as a multi-purpose transporter for cargo between settlements. With the outbreak of the war against the Orks, these vehicles were pressed into service to ferry armed forces around; a large cargo bay and rugged frame made them well-suited to the savage fighting the first colonists endured. Generations later, these vehicles have been outfitted with offensive weaponry and powerful shield generation systems and are used as armoured battering rams; firing on Orks hordes as they close, they crush the greenskins under their treads and disgorge great numbers of Ironclad deep into the enemy ranks.

I bought a WW2 Landing craft kit to represent the Auxilia Gorgons my Ironclad squads are equipped with and will be fitting it with tracks beneath the hull and extra weaponry near the pilot and along the sides of the hull, all controlled by a pair of soldiers located at the rear of the vehicle.

So far, I've only blu-tacked the bits together, but it seems to be the right size (ish)
Hull-

Crew-

Troop Bay-

I'm pretty sure it's bigger than the actual Gorgon model, which I don't mind; it's an AV 14/14/10 HP9 vehicles with an invul in certain locations; it's supposed to be big

ISO's who served 5 years with distinction were often given the option of joining the defence militia, or DefMil. Each settlement had their own DefMil force. They did not patrol, they did not venture outside the city limits, and they rarely aided the ISO's in their work. Their sole task was to defend their home from Ork attack, and they were well equipped for defensive warfare. Once promoted to DefMil service, a soldier could be assigned to specialised roles such as heavy weapons operator, vehicle crew or battlefield medic. Some specialist forces even accompanied the Ironclad on their patrols, although the decision to detach defence units was never made lightly.
This particular soldier has undergone specialised medical training, and wears a different helmet to those usually issued. Such headgear incorporates medical sensors in addition to the usual night vision and heat-sensing systems a standard helmet would have.

As well as the medic I slapped some paint on the Force Commander. Still needs some highlights, but here you go-

Evening all! Been slightly neglecting the Hawkes while I work on my Wolfbrothers, but I have managed to get a 1/48 scale track set for the ATAC, and picked up this from Dust Tactics as a Thunderbolt proxy:

I'm going to build it as the laser cannon variant and then add bomb racks for the sunfury missiles I've given it in the army list. I'm also thinking either blue and yellow invasion stripes on the wings or a yellow fuselage with some blue bits and invasion stripes in black and white on the wings

I'm thinking I'll reverse the colours used by the US Navy Blue Angels, so a yellow body with a blue stripe down the spine of the fuselage and blue wing and tail tips

So, I haven't forgotten about the Ironclad (or any other project) but I've had some problems finding time to paint or photograph. I'm nearly done with my first squad with H.E.L Rifles, and about 50% through the command squad, so I'll have those posted soon. I'm stuck on the tracks for the landing craft atm, the first idea I had didn't work so well. Back to the drawing board

Anyway, pics soon!

""Each time the Ironclad forced back the Ork hordes for a space of a few years, births of psionically gifted individuals increased, becoming dangerous. They turned, as always, to pragmatic use of technology to solve this problem. The result was a number of vehicles, mainly intended for combat, that relied on the pilot's own otherworldly powers to operate. These devices were colloquially known as psyphons (psychic siphons) for they drew upon and focused the user's powers. The machine pictured here belonged to the pyromancer Madeline Eckhart. The pistol focused her flamethrowing powers, while the sword glowed red-hot when swung
