~ Winter's Workspace ~

G'day everyone,

Some people may recall my name, I pop up every now and then on various P&M topics and try to provide help where I can; I have also entered some of the Monthly P&M competitions and had a few highly voted for minis, including my tech priest.

To add a little about myself, (as it standard for these kind of things), I am mid 20's grad student who is not too far off finishing his PhD and somehow I manage to unwind from the stress of finishing my experiments, writing papers and finishing my thesis through painting. That said, even when I was less busy with things like real life and had far more spare time to dedicate to my hobbies I have always been a painter more-so than a gamer (despite getting a few in on the rare occasion). Because of this, more often than not I just paint various miniatures based on what I think looks cool and/or what is fun to paint, although I do have a few "projects" (including some HH Alpha Legion) that I'll probably include in the blog here.

So more often than not I will jump around between a couple of 40k armies (Space Wolves and Vostroyans), 30k Alpha Legion, possibly some Warmachine (Cygnar) & Hordes (Circle), and whatever else is on my painting desk. So hopefully there will always be something for everyone.

I'll be doing my best to keep things in the first post up to date, and will do my best to provide links through to the relevant pages.

To kick things off I figured I would put up some of my previous work for people to look at, and then I'll get some WIP photos of what exactly is on my desk at the moment. So without further ado:

Space Wolf Rune Priest
Space Wolf Terminator Wolf Lord

Badmoon Orkz:

Well that's it for now, time to actually get stuck into some painting so I can keep this thing alive.

Comments and criticisms are always welcome.

I'm going to be having a crack at the Forgeworld scheme; the blue-green metallics.

I have everything that I need and set-up; however I just need to work up the courage and start attempting the airbrushing. Going to make a start today, and at least get the metallics down.

~ Update ~

So that said, in my procrastination of not doing that airbrush work, I did manage to get some paintwork done last night, and made some nice headway on the DKOK Diorama base and a Lord of Plagues.

I'm not planning to spend too much more time on the base, namely because most of it won't really be visible when I get all the soldiers back onto it. Outside of finishing up the wounded soldier, I just have some tidying up of splashes, and some weathering on the metal objects/barbed wire to do.

As for this guy, I have had him sitting around for a while now, and am going to try to work on some funky grey/purple skin tones.

So some more progress on the Lord of Plagues. I am pretty much finished off the skin at this point; I am still somewhat undecided about it, namely because it turned out far more green that I had hoped even though I was quite light on the green glaze that I used and was a bit ham fisted on the purple.

Hopefully as I complete the rest of the model, it should start to tie together and grow on me a little more. Next few steps are to complete the armour, and the boils and intestines.

As for the Alpha legion, they are all currently some shade of silver in preparation for more airbrushing. I just need to find the time to sit down and spend a few hours on it. Proving difficult with end of semester looming and all the things I need to complete for my Teaching duties.

I'll try to find some pictures when I can.

It is getting there slowly, I have managed to start basecoating the other models to go on it. And started planning the last few steps on the base.

Unfortunately for me, it is the end of semester for University out here, so rather than being neck deep in hobby, I am neck deep in exam marking and admin. Hopefully I'll get a little time here and there to do things.

teban wrote:I really like that model. Maybe I should get it sometime. Just to paint it up

It's definitely quite fun to paint, lets you invest time in lots of different techniques: weathering on the armour, flesh, viscera, metals, rust, bone, wood grain, etc. There are endless possibilities for this guy, a great model for painters.

RISE!!!!

So after being buried neck deep in various things that I needed to finish so a bunch of undergraduates can successfully move on in their degree, I managed to get some hobby time.

I am almost finished up with the Lord of plagues, just got to finish off the intestines and do some fancy weathering on his axe, plus a few clean ups. (I'll try to get a decent pic, but it's night time at the moment, and I only have my phone.)

Most surprisingly to myself, I managed to find a few hours this afternoon to make some headway on the Alpha Legion. I am going to be attempting to emulate and probably slightly tweak the blue/green scheme used by FW for my Alphas. So I emailed them a few months ago when I started planning the army, and thankfully they got back to me with a detailed recipe; it focuses a lot on using Tamiya clear paints and metallics to create the colour.

With that out of the way, onto the progress (and pictures):

So first off, the entire army has had their metallics finished up, although I might go back and tweak a few little spots here and there. It's not a particularly complicated series of layers, first is Tamiya Gun Metal all over, followed by a top down layer of Tamiya Flat Aluminium.

Just some more random WIP; namely because I paint every marine (that I make) without their bolters because I like being able to get to the chest. The moderately eagle eyed among you will probably notice a little blue/green man in the bottom left. He is my test model and looks like this at the moment:

This is where the scheme gets a little bit more complex, with some nice feathered airbrush layers (Top down Tamiya Clear Green, and bottom up Tamiya Clear blue), and a really odd semi metallic highlight in the middle of it (a mix of Tamiya Flat Aluminium and Tamiya Sky Blue). It's definitely an odd scheme to watch develop because its starts off quite green, and really close to a Mymeara eldar scheme and gets tweaked quite heavily from there. He is actually a friend's model, so he and his 9 comrades get to be the guinea pigs/experiments before I end up spraying my own minis. So at the moment, I am going to let him the chance to cure overnight, and then get onto finishing him off tomorrow.

Anyway that is progress for now, I am catching up with some mates tomorrow for a day of hobby, so I should have some more updates (hopefully a finished Alpha legionnaire).

Well you need wait no longer!!!

I spent the day doing some painting with some friends, and amongst other things managed to finish this guy off pretty quickly. I also managed to finish the Lord of Plagues off as well, which can be seen here:

I'll try to get some better final photos of both the models, I just need to sit down and knock together a lightbox, or just pony up the money for one.

Anyway comments, thoughts, etc. are always welcome.

So onto another update, cause I spent an hour this morning doing some painting, rather than going to work on time.

All of that time was spent on the Alpha Legion, and I have managed to get the first layer of colour down on everything. From here on out it will be a little bit slower as the airbrushing gets a little bit more fiddly. Anyway onto the pictures:

They look a little Sons of Horus at the moment, and I was definitely thinking with a little black in the mix that I am using, you could do a really easy metallic Sons of Horus army.

Lastly, and sadly because it is the middle of winter in Australia, and we are currently losing light at about 5 pm, I won't be able to get to too much more airbrushing until the weekend. So i'll have to find some more single miniatures to get started on in the meantime.

C & C as always is welcome.

The Alpha Legion dude is looking awesome.

Is that the final colour for the eyes?

Lord of plague looks great, the axe is really cool.

Lord of Plagues was fun, I definitely recommend picking one up if you are a painter. I am a bit hesitant to, but I might still tweak a few things here and there on it, maybe some more work on the axe, and definitely some dead grass on the base.

As for the eye lenses, at the moment they are a purple colour, sadly it is a little hard to see because of my crappy photography and the reflection on the miniature. That said, I am not 100% sure about it just yet, the same as I am not 100% on what colour to do power weapons etc.

So that is something that I am definitely open to suggestions on.

As for my crappy photography, I looked at constructing a lightbox, and then in my googling determined that buying one from eBay was fair cheaper and so picked up one of these:

So hopefully it will mark the end of my crappy photography, when it turns up (fingers crossed the end of this week).

So the weekend so far has seen some nice progress. So far I have managed to magnetise the plasma cannon for the Contemptor (few other weapon options left to do) and have made decent progress in airbrushing the whole army. Looking at time spent so far, I should probably come close to finishing the airbrushing entirely either today, definitely tomorrow.

The army currently looks like this:

The interesting thing is the scheme really doesn't look like it is going in the right direction until you finish. You basically have to be finished painting the entire model (including trim etc) before it all comes together. It's definitely quite daunting.

Hopefully more updates to come shortly.

I don't think the purple lens pops enough, have you considered red?

Then you could use purple for the power weapons, an alternative colour that might work well is orange.

Nice work on the dread and stuff too.

I think I might go for an orange/red colour, I do kind of agree that the purple isn't doing much for me at the moment. I'm almost finished with the airbrushing so will probably finish off another marine quickly and see what the orange/red mix looks like.

More progress happened today, I was hoping to fix them, but probably inhaled far too many paint/thinner fumes so called it quits a little early. The army is currently looking like this:

From the last set of photos they have had blue airbrushed on the bottom half of panels, and then a mix of Tamiya Sky Blue and Tamiya Flat aluminium on the sections that were green. It's quite interesting because it forces them into a weird minty coloured stage which hopefull will then correct into the turquoise colour.

Last steps are a few thin layers of blue over the metallic mix and they should be ready to finish off the trimming etc.

The scheme is complex but surprisingly quick, will definitely be the fasted painted army for me, just in time for the old tax return and some more purchases.

Pokemon GO also kind of got in the way.

So the week has been crazy; and sadly I haven't had a huge amount of time for hobby, although the weekend is looking good. Photos will hopefully come ASAP though.

As for the rest of the army, tax time arrived down under so I I have been toying with a few ideas on lists to inform my next purchases. I expect, I will be mostly working with either Skorr's specific Rite of War, or something simple like Pride of the Legion.

I kind of wish there were some more Alpha Legion specific models that I could work with, and that Headhunters still had preferred enemy but alas.

I am considering something like:

Autilon Skorr

Apothecarian Detachment

Veteran Tactical Squad
Veteran Tactical Squad

Contemptor
Contemptor
Leviathan

Headhunters
Xiphon Interceptor

Any thoughts? Might add some transports, and/or swap out the Leviathan for a Sicarin perhaps.

As I said progress would come, and come it has! The XX legion pretty much have their major colour finished off. They are currently looking like this:

I just have to go back over them all with a final light coat of the Tamiya thin blue, just to clean up any spots that have been missed and to tone down some of the more greener spots. Then I can start the wrestle that will be painting all the silver.

Hopefully, I can get a test model with the new eyes (orange) finished up tonight, so we can compare with the purple.

More to come!

So after a relatively long period of not doing much painting, and a number of other life things (like my doctoral thesis getting in the way) I have managed to get a few things painted and some proper photos taken too.

All of these models were quite fun to paint; I enjoyed the diorama the most as I have had that idea floating around in my head since I got the mounted commissar close to 10 years ago. Might finally get around to the next diorama idea I have too. The rest of the Custodes squad is coming too, I have just decided to do a few other models in the middle.

Comments and criticism are always welcome, and embraced. So without further ado the photos.

Lovely work, the dio is very captivating and love the way the red seems to burst from it. The tech marine has a great menace and mechanical presence and the shade and tones on the custode standard bearer are truly Impresive, looking forward to seeing more.
