In addition to new characters, we also hope to fund a line of highly detailed resin western-themed building kits. Here is the nearly finished sculpt for the first one, a small shop. All we need to do is add some tabs to the sides of the walls so they can fit together good, and maybe add a back door. The inside floor is 4x4", side walls are 2" high and the roof and lower walls can be built as separate pieces so you can move your guys around inside. You can click the pic to enlarge it in the gallery and there's some more angles on our facebook page.

We're also thinking about using the same lower building, but putting together 1 or 2 other roof and storefront signage pieces, like a flat roof for ambushing your foes.

What do you think?

Looks good! Will certainly be keeping an eye out on this one.

The Unsung look especially tempting, and I can see them getting some extra work in Brimstone!

Thanks Lots of hard work (and hard earned cash) going into this one. 3 weeks to go and I feel like I’m still nowhere near ready, but forcing myself to have a deadline is the best way to keep things on track.

I’m hoping to have a sample PDF of the new rulebook ready around next week or so.

I really liked this game when it was first released, but you lost me as a customer when we went all weird west. Still, good luck with the kickstarter.

Weird west is what has me interested!

Will definitely be backing just have to figure out for what. On items you already have renders for when are you estimating fulfillment as currently?

@Catyrpelius thanks and sorry to see you go. This is the direction I always wanted to take it but I know it's not for everyone. What can I say I'm a nerd and I love monsters

@RiTides I'm going to be using the Mechadrome Method with fulfillment and guesstimating way in advance, but hoping to ship much sooner. I'll have to wait until the rulebooks and everything is all printed before I can start shipping, and I'm betting Chinese New Year will end up delaying things... But I'm expecting to have things in the warehouse ready to go by April or so.. I was going to put June of next year as the delivery date just to be safe.

I'm still waiting for printing quotes, but I am hoping to do the rules as a deluxe box set that has the full rulebook + loot cards + fancy dice + punchboard full of tokens.. I stole that idea from the Twisted steampunk game. So that's going to have to be printed in China. I wanted to do something a little more special since it's basically a rerelease of the game from the ground up.

Might want to add a blurb on what Blackwater Gulch actually is (for those of us new to it). e.g. from your site:

Blackwater Gulch is a western horror skirmish game of Outlaws, Lawmen and Savage Beasts.

I'm not usually into weird west stuff, but this looks pretty good!

I have some new news I wanted to announce today. It’s a long one, so TLDR, I’m going to be using Prodos Games’ Unicast (resin/HIPS hybrid) for Blackwater Gulch minis in the upcoming campaign.

Due to recent gaming-world events I thought this deserved special attention and I just want to be up front now and let everyone know what’s going on from the get go. I know this will be a deal breaker for some of you, and if so let me apologize in advance. I have been back and forth over this.. I was going to switch a while ago when I first learned about Unicast, then changed my mind back to metal, but I made my final decision now based on overall price and more importantly the quality of the final product. To be honest I was a bit scared to announce this due to people’s "passionate" reactions to Prodos lately. Their recent campaigns may have had a lot of issues, and they might not be great at dealing with the public, but in all of my research and chatting with others in the biz, their track record doing production for other companies is solid and they have been forthcoming and answered every dumb question I can think of. Today I gave them the go-ahead to create the first Unicast mold for the Unsung gang and hope to have samples to show off shortly.

My goal is to have a retail-friendly game, with boxed sets of minis all shrink-wrapped and ready for store shelves at an affordable cost. Unicast comes with the added bonus of highly detailed “plastic" minis that are all 1 piece and ready to play right out of the box. Comparing prices to metal, I can have new starter sets for $25 retail in Unicast, or $35 in metal. Mold & 3D printing costs for 1 starter set are around $800 per gang for Unicast, or $1200+ for metal depending on the amount of parts. PVC just isn’t an option for me at this time, it is way too expensive in the low quantities I need, and more importantly the detail level isn’t up to my standards.

So with that in mind I’m going to be offering all new gang starter sets for $20 in the Kickstarter “sweet spot". The rulebook box set I mentioned previously will cost around $50 retail or $40 in the KS. There will also be a free PDF version of the rules too as usual (almost done). If I do a hardback rulebook instead, that would cost $30, but I think the box set will be more “special” and a better value since it will also come with Loot Cards, custom dice and lots of tokens & markers. I will also be offering bonus miniatures in the campaign, the first one will be the Jackalope and we’ll add others in as stretch goals if all goes well. The funding goal will likely be $20,000 because of the boxed ruleset, I need to order at least 1000 copies and it will be printed in China. If I do the hardback rulebook alone, that would likely cost $30 and give me a $15000 funding goal, but I can have that printed here in the US.

Lastly, the building kit I was hoping to add to the campaign probably isn’t going to happen at this time. It’s going to be very expensive to produce and the lowest margin I could afford will make it cost around $45 which I feel is too expensive for a little 4x4” building. I was hoping for $30 or less. So what I will be doing now is offering the print-ready 3D files as a free bonus in the campaign, and after the campaign ends I’ll start looking for other alternatives to try and get a better price for resin models.. maybe even try casting it myself. But for now, folks that have access to a 3D printer will be able to print as many copies as they want.

So that’s all for now, I hope to have some more previews in the next couple of days!

Interesting news.

Very curious to see how the sample Unicast stuff turns out, as I'm sure you are too.

Interestingly enough my Unicast stuff has needed more cleanup than my resins from Prodos in recent orders, but the overall detail is just crazy, considering the poses and equipment the figures have.
Even then it's mostly just been trimming off little excess bits of flash for the most part.

At the price point you're offering hopefully it works out for all parties involved, as that starts entering into impulse backing territory.

Do you expect to offer the freebies in unicast as well, or will there be options for figures in other materials (especially if the end up on the larger scale of things)?

Pretty much everything is going to be Unicast unless it's too big to work, and then it will be resin. The first stretch goal is going to be for the Jersey Devil, which will be a big monster on a 50mm base, probably around 60mm tall. So I'm not sure that will work in Unicast. We pretty much have to do the sculpt, then send it to them to check out and then decide if it will work or not. So if it doesn't work, then he'll be resin. Also artillery pieces like the Gatling Gun would probably have to be resin too because of all the different parts.. but I plan to keep that in metal for the time being.

I was going to wait until the goal is hit but I decided to have Krisztian go ahead and sculpt the Jersey Devil now (He did the Rake, Ghoul and Wendigo and the building kit). Mostly since it's a big model and I want to be sure what it will cost and all, and also because I just couldn't resist. Here's his concept art

A few updates. We decided to push the KS launch date back to August 29th. This is so that there will be ample time to get some samples of the miniatures done. Since it's an all new material for me I want to be able to show off some high res photos or a video showing the detail and quality. That will also give me time to keep working on the rulebook and cards and other items so everything will look a bit more polished.

Speaking of the rulebook, I just finished the first draft. You can click here to download it. It's just the rules, a lot of the gang bios and other things will be added later. It also hasn't been proofread yet, and still needs a lot of art, photos and diagrams. I wanted to get it out there now though so playtesters can start playtesting.

Next up, since the Unicast minis will need to have integrated bases, we put together this set of Rocky Base Toppers. These will be attached to the minis, but I also wanted to see if I can release them separately in metal or resin, for folks that might want to add them to metal minis. They are 23mm across, so they should fit inside the top of the 30mm round lip bases or on top of a GW style 25mm base. Here's some picks of each one, and also how they will look attached to a mini. You can click the pic to enlarge

Next up I'm going to start laying out the Loot Cards and Character Cards.

I recently received a sample of Unicast and was really impressed - and I think it demonstrates well the potential for your range:

Look at that bored out gun barrel! It's not going to match resin for level of detail, but looks really nice, feels robust and also doesn't cost as much. It lets you do things like that barrel without making the miniature in a ton of parts. I'm even more interested now that it's confirmed you're using it.

Obviously just planning out lead time is important - ideally schedule receiving the minis well before the projected delivery date, as you already mentioned you will be.

Looking forward to it

Will there be a seperate pledge for the buildings?

Are the buildings made by someone other than Prodos?

Edit: Never mind. Missed the bit about no buildings. Minis are nice and affordable, but I'll be giving them a miss because Prodos.

Yeah I'm real impressed with the amount of detail they can get. I just think about the Chupacabra minis we did last year, those little guys ended up having to be in 6 pieces because of the dynamic poses, so the body, arms, legs, tail and head are all separate. They're a pain to build. And those extra parts meant extra expensive. I'm hoping after the campaign is done I can update them to Unicast and have them each be just 1 piece and a lot cheaper.

As far as the building kit goes, I'm still looking into the best way to go with that. I'll make it happen eventually. Since it will have a real low margin I don't think I'll try to make that retail-ready and just sell it directly on my site with a small markup. The pieces are pricey since they're big and chunky, but I wanted them that way so they won't warp easily. So i'll probably just sell that for like $35 and take preorders to see how many copies I need to make.

We’re gearing up to get the campaign under way. Monday, August 29th is now set in stone for the launch date and everything is on track! For now, I have a couple more previews to show off.

First, here is the Jersey Devil sculpt. He’ll be the first stretch goal for the campaign. You can click the any of the photos below to enlarge them in the dakka gallery

Next up, here are two characters who will also be featured in stretch goals as bonus miniatures. First is the murderous fiend known only as Jacob, he will have a special Undying ability that will allow him to get back up in the next game turn if he’s taken out of action. And he’s followed by the infamous demon hunter Ashton Campbell, with his nefarious Book of Curses that only works if he says all the words right.

We’ll post the preview link for the campaign page as soon as it’s ready! Probably over the weekend or early next week.

Probably too late for the KS, but I'd like to see a ruleset compatible with the Shadows of Brimstone miniatures. That way, you can open the game to a boardgaming audience, with minimal investment. You could make character cards for the Reaper western miniatures, to generate interest from the Reaper miniature fans. Secret Weapon Miniatures and Reaper have just finished a Tablecapes: Mines KS, and you could make scenarios that use the core set.

Shipping… stinks. It’s getting more and more expensive lately. I’m going to be using ShipNaked for fulfillment, and that will be a big help for things like customs and VAT and stuff like that. US shipping will be reasonable, $3-4 per pound. Overseas shipping not as good, will be roughly $10 per pound, and that’s for UK, EU, AU, China, Japan and others. However Russia, Brazil and a few other countries will be much more, around $20 per pound. I’ll have a full shipping prices and info listed in the campaign FAQ. That said, the ruleset box alone will weigh 1.5kg or just over 3 pounds, but the plastic minis will be light so I’m expecting the sweet spot pledge with the rules + 3 new gangs + bonus minis to be around 4 pounds. ShipNaked does have warehouses all over that could make shipping cheaper, but the only way for that to work would be if I can send a shipment to the other warehouses directly from china, that means a minimum of 1000 copies.. so that would only happen if the campaign manages to go insanely well, like well over $100k. Just based on previous campaigns I’m not really expecting that to happen, but I guess you never know I do have a bunch of of stretch goals planned just in case, but there will also be a finite amount, I’d rather just have a few stretch goals that are easy to fulfill on time and then do a second campaign after the first one ships with more stuff, rather than one big one with multiple waves that drags on and on.

As far as other games are concerned, I don’t play Shadows of Brimstone so I wouldn’t know how to make balanced character stats for that, but if someone else wants to put together stat cards for our models then go for it! That being said, the new plastic minis are going to have bases molded onto them already like board game minis, but they will be a lot more detailed. For regular sized minis these integrated bases will be 23mm across, so that they will fit inside the top of the 30mm round lip warmachine style bases we have been using kind of like a base topper. They will also fit perfectly inside a 1” square for most board games too I’ve actually been wondering if we should even include the extra plastic bases with the new minis, since a base is part of the mini now.. so far I’m still planning to keep them so they match the old metal minis, but I was thinking of putting that to a vote during the campaign.

Also on that note, the focus of the new rules is to use our minis and stat cards, but there will still be rules for creating your own characters from scratch so you’re also more than welcome to use minis from other companies in your gangs too.

The theme isn't my cup of tea (western) but I'm all for some good looking miniatures. I think the ability to create your own characters is a good touch. I am interested in the new designs, detail and the material will help a little on being lighter to ship at least.

It is looking good.

The plan is for the figures with integral bases to still be unicast, right?

I wouldn't worry so much about making rules for uses in other games- as it stands, most of the Shadows of Brimstone characters are based on a class as it is, with a hero sheet based on that particular class and skill set. There's nothing stopping us from using any of these new figures in Brimstone, just like there's nothing stopping me from using my Wild West Exodus Jesse James as a Gunslinger in Brimstone!
