Finished! More in my Gallery under Historicals.

ACW Perry. So awesome. So stoke to be putting them together, but JFC... they are soooooo much more finicky than orks lol. Teeeny tiny fidley lil bits. Ok. Nuff whining.

Anyhoo, I dipped 9000 points of orks in polyshade royal walnut, but my Bolt action did so good with just inking. Wont do a batrep unless painted for this (you) wine and cheese audience, do you think dip or no? Gotta say, my BoltAction minis are my best with 20,000 pts of GW minis under my belt. Airbrushing... zenithal... anything for speed. Theres just so many of those yanks and rebs.... any advice?

Tons of little dudes in massed ranks. I'd go for speed and dip. ACW uniforms were much plainer then, say, Napoleonics, so I think they lend themselves to a quick paint job

Finally done assembling. Why did I do this again? I decided I will base them after painting. I guess that how you button conters so it? Guns not yet glued to carriages and cavalry not yet glued to their mounts. Fencing, I figured would be easier to prime and paint. So all of this, brand new costed $125 USD. Looking at the same number of orks would be $460. So dont let a GW apologist whine about design "costs".

Ignore the abandoned YVarha proj....

I have the bits for anyone wholl make it worth my while. You pay shipping to. It will include the bases, as I ordered black powder compatible ones from warlord. Probably 100ish pairs of arms holding muskets. Some swords. Hats o plenty. Should be 12 field gun barrels but no carriages of course.

Federals especially:

Cap and jacket dark blue.
Trousers sky blue.
Waterbottle and strap off-white.
Belt, ammo pouch, cap bill and shoes black
Blanket roll can be done various colours because it wasn't a uniform item. Light grey, dark grey, or red, all work.
Rifle is brown and gunmetal.

Condeferates can be militia grey if early war, if late war, a mixture including butternut brown, militia grey, and captured Federal colours.

There are uniform books for the ACW that will guide you especially for units like regular army, marines, zouaves and Berdan's Sharpshooters.

I would finish with a medium dip, finally spray matt.

The set came with a painting guide. The Zoauves Ill paint like the Louisiana Tigers and the 5th NY. I was thinking the feds would all be the same, and the rebs look more like a rabble. My home state gave 1 regiment to Lees army, so I will call them Lees army of NVirginia. My GGG Grandfather was in the seige of Vicksburg, but I dont think that army was super active during the war. At least not as famous.

- I am modeling all the Zoauves as skirmishers on 20x20mm.

- The guns will have 4 crewmembers each. All will be the "Napolean" 12 pder. Confederates w straight barrel. Yanks will have the muzzle swell. Gonna paint them gold as they were bronze. Is that right? Green gun carriage for both sides. Do you think model the crew independent of gun or no?

- i am modeling the cavalry 2 per base. Per the BP rec. Does anyone know if there are certain colors (breeds) I shouldnt use? I was gonna use all of my limited horse knowledge. All black, all white (Traveler?), black/brown w white face and ankles, bay, palamino, appalusa (sp?), brown with large white sploches. One base in each army will have a base of a bugler and banner man.

- The infantry, I may have put in too many bannermen. They will be mounted 4 to a base. Comprising a total of 4 battalions each. Each battalion will have 3 regular bases and a banner base. The union bannerbase will have a drummer, commander, and 2 banners. The rebs will have only 3 men (due to amount of models in the box). They will consist of 1 bannerman, 1 drummer, and 1 commander.

-The generals will all be mounted on large round BoltAction bases. I had 2 gunners left over, so I gave them cavalry banners to stand next to general on the circle as an aide d'camp

What do you all think of that? I think I may need to swell the ranks or maybe omit some command bases to make the battalions larger.

Lastly the banners they are giving me hives. I have seen several tutorials. The most impressive was a hand painted banner on some sort of rice fabric and then elmers. I am a little concerned about yellowing of the elmers. Then theres the tin foil technique. Finally theres the one im inclined to use is thick clear plastic packaging, and maybe Flags of War waterslides. Other option is hand paint thase clear plastic bits and buy a heat gun to crinkle them.

ACW guns were a mixture of 12-pound Napoleons and a variety of rifled guns, which were mainly found on the Federal side. The Napoleon had a muzzle bell. The smooth tapered barrel sounds like a Parrot or Whitworth 10-pounder. Therefore I would give the Federals more of the smooth barrel guns. Realistically, the Federals should simply have more artillery of all types, because they did.

The rifled guns I think were steel rather than bronze but even bronze guns were painted, as were their carriages. I don't remember any details right now so some research on T'Internet might be useful if you are serious about using the right colours.

(When I did my 15mm Federals 25 years ago, I just painted the barrels bronze for Napoleons or steel for rifles, and painted the carriages and limbers grey. I think this is wrong.)

Flags are easiest done by printing them on paper and painting them with diluted white PVA glue.

I did mine freehand on tin foil, and I am proud of them though they look pretty crappy compared to modern stuff. My varnish yellowed a bit because I "cooked" it to finish the units for a convention.

Speaking for myself, I am not hyper concerned if any of my wargame figures are completely accurate. I want them to "look good" , which means at least painted in semi-realistic colours. For example, I did not know in the early 1990s that Federal artillery wood was usually painted green, so I painted mine grey, and I'm not going to repaint them now.

You have easier access to better information now, thanks to the Internet, so do the right colours if you can, but remember that the point of the hobby is to slap down lots of lead or plastic and start rolling dice.

Right KK!
Regarding the guns, what I saw is that the confederates had no muzzle swell on their FGuns but the yanks did. All smooth bore. I gave 10 of 60 rebs union blue trousers. Thank you airbrush. My god its like cheating.

When I say give the Federals more of the Napoleon 12-lber, they should also have more of the rifled guns too. The Union had much more artillery. The Conferedates used the same guns, but they tended to have a smaller proportion of rifled guns because they could not manufacture them, and had to capture or import them.

The Wikipedia article gives a good run-down of the various types.

Thats my source! Haha! I just dont know if the gun should be goldish or black. The carriage will be green and black. Just bought some Airbrush Medium.... Holy crap what a difference! I am much less intimidated now. Heres all the Union Trousers and 10 or so of 60 Conderates in captured trousers. Only 60mins.

The bronze tubes, Napoleons, apparently were unpainted since bronze is not liable to oxidation as quickly as iron. The iron tube guns were painted black or possibly light grey in Confederate service. No-one is really sure, so I would go with those colours and not worry. My Napoleons are bronze, and the rifles are black. All my figures are Union.

Well, I finished the dark blue blouses yesterday and I hate them. Going back and darkening thrm with a blue wash. Original coat was a thinned dark blue. Do you all think I should just paint opaque then drybrush?

Yankees are getting closer to finished. Probably another 3 solid days. The skin wash has helped I think. Still uncertain about how to do flags. Not gonna do the prepackaged ones that came with the minis.

Thanks Judge! Got off early today (0800) so I will try to make some more headway. Thanks for commenting.

Im learning a great deal about the war and the times around it. For instance, my GGGF was involved in the Siege of Vicksburg captured July3 or 4. Released after the war and was either bushwhacked or died of illness on the return. My GM and GGM always said he was shot in the back, but I am unsure. Also I think the cannon tampers had multiple purposes and werent actually just for pushing powder and shot. The big end was sheep skin and wetted in a bucket to clean out any debris, extinguish sparks and cool the barrel. All sorts of ingenious deadly sad stuff.

Your stuff is looking pretty good.

Have you ever visited the Vicksburg war memorials? Personally, I've visited it twice (I live about 2 hours away), and learned a lot about the siege. If you're not too far away, it makes for a nice Saturday visit (the Union battle line is a lot more interesting - the Southerners built very few memorials, instead spending the memorial money to help locals).

There's also an old Railroad Depot down by the Mississippi River there that has a scale model of the entire Vicksburg battle line. It's pretty darn cool and puts the drive-through tour of the memorials in a whole different perspective.

It never ends well

@Stormonu:
- My mom went to Vicksburg and knowing about my hobby sent me multiple pics. She also found my GGGFs name in the computerized rolls.

Here's some cavalry.... the horses are nearly finished for both sides. Next will be the Zoauves for both sides followed by the big block of confederate regulars.
