I, like many others, have played and enjoyed the hell out of Total War: Warhammer. I absolutely loved the Empire campaign, and it got me inspired to try my hand at them. I think it'll be an interesting challenge to paint models that aren't sci fi models, and to paint the quartered Talabheim scheme. I got a bunch of the ol' flouncy shirted men of the Empire together and started painting. The idea will be to use them in old editions of Fantasy or The 9th Age, which both hold some interest in my group. I'd also gladly try Age of Sigmar or Kings of War if someone wanted to give either a go. Anyway, here's my first unit:

This first unit served as a "test model" for the army and I'm not thrilled with how they came out. I got overconfident with Ceramite White and Mephiston Red's coverage over black, and had a hard time getting a truly smooth coat. For my next unit I:
1. Will try the scheme over grey primer
2. Won't batch paint 20 dudes at once, jesus christmas that was a bad idea

The bases were super easy - definitely the easiest part of the models! I glued the sand on the model, primed it black, then the bases were just Steel Legion Drab drybrushed with Tallarn Sand and Karak Stone. The grass is Gale Force 9.

It took a few months, but I finally found the motivation to go back to my Empire. This time I primed grey, which I should have done to begin with. It made things way easier, and I'm much happier with the results! I'm still going for a "good enough" level of painting, nothing quite like my Ultramarines, but I think they'll look great on the tabletop:

Great job! It's hard to get a lot of detail on lots of models, but they look fantastic from even a small distance. I tried batch painting 30 boyz for a squad before... they still aren't done. I found the magic number to be 5.

10's worked well for me; I did batch paint 30 Valhallan guardsmen once though; I don't remember a minute of it!

Thank you!

I just finished up my unit of 12 Reiksguard. I had to mix in some Knights Panther bits because that's just what I have, but I'm pretty happy with the results nonetheless:

It was too striking for me not to do! I've got inklings of painting an Imperial Knight in the same scheme, but we'll see how bad that idea is when we get to it

I think it would be great to see Imperial Knights done in the classic knight orders from the Empire. There were a bunch of them.

Thanks guys! I'm hoping to make this army look really appealing on the tabletop and this scheme is definitely doing me some favors there.

I've already ordered Templar cross and gryphon transfers, so expect a Reiksguard-looking Knight at some point in the future, once I decide doing big fields of white and red is a good idea

I played in my first game of Age of Sigmar this weekend! It was fun, and my Great Cannon was so effective I went home and finished painting it almost immediately:

Less effective (but still very cool) were my Captain and Witch Hunter. I love these models, and they stand as great contrasts to one another:

I suspect we all want to see an Imperial Knight done in a Knights Panther style - giant animal skin, and all...

Thank you! Total War is seriously about as good as Dawn of War as far as being an army seller if you ask me. I've got 10 more Swordsmen (including flag and musician) on my desk right now, with a box of Demigryph Knights just begging to be assembled.

Swords, and boards, and feathers in their hats - that's a good looking start to a regiment, Brother.

I see you've got them spread out a bit in those pictures - how well do they rank up as a block?

Thanks! They rank up really well, I just wanted to spread them out a little so they'd photograph better. The swords rank up easier than the halberds or crossbows do, that's for sure.

Thanks! It's kind of exhausting painting all this red and white, but I've got some Ironsides Handgunners coming up next:, which should actually be pretty quick considering they don't have anywhere near as many baubles and bits as the stock Empire troops do, and most of them are covered in platemail.

The Empire: The mustachioed fashion icons of the Old World. The Imperium wishes they could be this stylish.

This looks really good! When I painted *a* Talabecheim state trooper I just did the pants in red and the shirt in white. Doing the quartered thing seems like a real pain especially with the colors you are using.
