Figured it was time to start one of these.

I've been on a bit of a hiatus from 40K -- painting and playing alike -- but have found a lot of enjoyment in starting to paint up my Blood Rage minis, as well as working on undead and adventurers for fantasy games such as Frostgrave, Dragon Rampant, and A Song of Blades and Heroes. Doubtless 40K painting will return someday.

Assuming nobody objects, I will also be putting up some pics of painted-up Nerf guns and maybe costume items for a 40K-style Ork LARP game that I'm going to soon. I realise this may be considered slightly off-topic for the forum, but I figure people will probably be interested since it's basically more painting and modelling of stuff in the 40K universe (just in a 1:1 scale!). I'll just upload a WIP pic of my two Sluggas to begin with, and will add more Ork costuming/props stuff if there is interest.

My minis painting is not the greatest in the world! And, my photography setup is also not brilliant -- I have a pretty decent phone camera but no lightbox as yet. I plan to pick up a small lightbox soon, which should let you all see my painting errors in finer detail.

Blood Rage stuff first. I loved painting the big monsters from this. They're incredibly detailed, but felt just as easy to paint as Bones.

Frost Giant

Mountain Giant -- I really enjoyed finding lots of different ways to do shades of leathery brown on this one.

Troll

Mystic Troll

Fenris

These are just about finished, I think. I am currently working on the Fire Giant and Sea Serpent, as well as having made a start on some of the regular Vikings and the Gods.

Next is a teaser pic for the Ork Nerf/LARP stuff. More available if there is interest!

This is a WIP shot of my shoota and two sluggas. The starting points are all Nerf guns: a Mega Rotofury, a Rebelle Sweet Revenge, and a Zombie Strike Doublestrike.

At this point, the following stages are complete (and I do have pics documenting them for anyone who wants to see):

1) Modelling: add ork glyphs and details in high impact plastic, craft foam, hot glue, epoxy putty (used to create heavily rusted areas and hide Nerf logos, with a light layer of putty which is then hit repeatedly with an embossing tool when still malleable), plasticard, corrugated plastic sheet (sign material type stuff -- used because it can be easily damaged to create another layer of weathering), modelling paste, Fuller's Earth (for rust, again), PVA, etc. Also at this stage, various cuts, scuffs, scratches, scores and other impact damage is added with a craft knife.

2) Undercoat some areas in Barbarian Flesh (Army Painter) and a bright Chromium Orange, to provide a couple of different rusty basecoats.

3) Marmite (actually chocolate spread -- it's cheaper) weathering and salt weathering.

4) Spray in Plasticote gloss black.

5) Scrub lightly to get the weathering from (3) complete

6) Rust effects: Modelmates rust effect paint is added, along with Vallejo Dark Rust and Vallejo Light Rust, in various layers, both on the pre-weathered areas and elsewhere.

7) Glyphs and other areas are painted, deliberately Orkishly i.e. not very neatly.

8) Fabric is added for detailing / sling / grip etc.

9) A few globby dabs of dark woodstain are applied in recesses to give an oily, dirty effect.

Next stages will be some mud effects using Fuller's Earth and PVA, and a coat or two of varnish.

Had a bit of a hiatus after the busiest ever month in work.

Made a start on painting my Genestealer Cultists, at last, as well as some progress on undead.

Here's five Copplestone Castings "Bareheaded Troopers" as Genestealer Cultists, with head swaps and a bit of milliput.

I think they look fine beside the other Cultists -- here's WIP paint jobs.

All minis in the pic have had a black undercoat, blue zenithal spray, and two home-made purple washes on fleshy areas. The Neophytes then all got one light coat of Pale Flesh or Dwarf Flesh over exposed skin, so that some of the original bluey purples showed through, and then another purple wash. Much more still to do on these, but I like them so far.

Thanks Evil!

Had another bit of a hiatus but got some painting in over Xmas and in the run-up to it, including (gasp!) very nearly finishing some minis...

I'm not one of your bona fide expert painters though so am uploading them here in their almost-finished state for some constructive criticism.

First up, two of GW's undead cavalry. Got these as a bit of an experiment, splitting the box with my son (who got three). We were both massively impressed with the minis, though, and will be buying more I think. At the time the intention was to use them with Dragon Rampant, but I think we'll be playing more Kings of War now so ideally need more.

I'm happy with the look of the cloth, other than the banner (which wants a lot more work). The armour is looking OK too, I think. Need to finish off the bases, though, and add some highlighting to some other bits like the vines and plume.

Next is a batch of skeletons with hand weapons and shields. These are a mix of Mantic, Frostgrave, and the odd Reaper Bones one. Not shown are the shields, as I'm reworking them a bit, but I'll get a pic up eventually... I'm happy enough with these for a mass of infantry, especially the slime on the Milliput paving slabs.

Finally, the official Frostgrave Wight. This was my first experiment aiming for the moldy, decayed cloth look that can be seen on some of the other minis, and it looks OK but unfortunately doesn't seem to have photographed too well. :(

Long time, no update! I've mostly been writing up my PhD, so crafting time has been rare and often somewhat desperate in nature.

I've been obsessing over Frostgrave terrain, mostly, so this update is about my work on that front.

This is a riser, of 50mm high foam, just to allow for upper levels to the ruined city. I have a few of these on the go. No paint job yet. I've carved flagstones into the top and stone retaining walls into the sides.

Here's a metal, house-shaped lantern I picked up for £1 in a charity shop, with the first of my modifications to turn it into a medieval style house:

And a few hours later, with most of the building done on the front at least. I still need to add a thatched roof and finish detailing the sides and back, before starting to paint it up.

Finally, some shots of an Amera ruined tower, based on styrofoam, with styrofoam and craft foam flagstones, and cork walls, added to make a terraced area. These are in roughly chronological order during the build and paint. Still needs some more painting, varnishing, flocking, etc., and I will also add an MDF base under the styrofoam...

Close-up of the steps:

And wall:

Action shot, with lich wizard and cultists, after a bit more paint...

Small amount of progress on the riser... It's now glued to a 300mm square base of 3mm MDF. The riser takes up half the base, so I can eventually have a bunch of risers in a row to represent the upper levels. Some risers will take up 3/4 or 1/4 of the base rather than the 1/2 as in this one. I also plan to do some double-height risers, for even higher level adventure.

Steps and stone wall by Scotia Grendel.

Some more terrain progress, though most of this still needs paint, as well as Milliput cobbles and other texturing / filling...

This is another riser section, with a ramp-like road. The modularity means it will fit fine with the other riser.

This is a "quarter" riser, as compared to the other two "half" risers above. The base is still 300mm x 300mm but the upper floor only occupies around a quarter of the base. Resin details from Ainsty, metal door from Black Tree Design I think.

And the start of a fighting pit that can be used either as part of the above modular terrain set (it's a "whole" riser, i.e. it's all set at the higher level) or as a standalone arena for playing Gorechosen.

Fighting pit progress: texturing the floor and some walls with 50/50 milliputt/plasticine, pushing 40mm MDF discs into it to act as floor tiles / movement hexes, removing 8 of the tiles so as to add them back in modularly as either plain tiles, obstacles, or flaming pits. Also added tunnel with portcullis (Zealot Doors). I imagine that fighters leap or are thrown down from the upper level, but that cleanup crews probably head in through the side door.

More progress, showing irregular paving slabs on the upper levels, four modular obstacles (in progress), four modular plain tiles (need paint) and mod podge / paint / ink mix over most of the foam and putty.

Detail of fighting pit rock wall with spikes to discourage lurking in corners:

I love that terrain, and the fighting pit is very impressive so far. The broken cage trap is neat.

Terrain's one of my favorite things to see develop, going from scraps and wild things into houses and dungeons is always amazing to me.

Here's my entry to Azazelx's Decembuary painting challenge. I did take the pic on 24 Dec but forgot to upload it. Hopefully the obvious Xmas stuff in it (Santa hat and Die Hard) help prove that. This is all Reaper Bones stuff, mostly from the 3rd KS campaign: three Frost Giants, one snake-god-thing with a humanoid head (I think of it as The God In The Bowl from the Robert E. Howard "Conan" story of the same name), and one non-KS troll.

More older pics that I did a while back and didn't upload, lazily. I spent a bit of time speed-painting some terrain for my daughter, so she would have enough for games of Frostgrave and Relicblade. So this is her Dragons Don't Share terrain from Bones 2, and a Saruman figurine in about 60mm scale, picked up for 50p as terrain from a wargames show, both given quick and easy stone paint jobs.

And some conversions for the Frostgrave Triple Sprue Challenge. The challenge was to take one sprue each of Soldiers, Barbarians, and Cultists, and build a wizard, apprentice, and captain. I call this three the Band of the Bone Jarl: I wanted a Northern European style necromancer's band. Someday they will get paint.

Decembuary update... I got some progress on these three before the house move, but have not yet found and unpacked them since moving ten days ago. Hope to do so and get some final painting done before the end of Decembuary on Wednesday! Quick and dirty WIP pics taken on a phone without a lightbox, as that was already packed:

Two years since I last updated this! To be fair I have moved house twice in that time...

I am going to chuck in some pics of projects started or finished, over the next few days. Mostly started, obviously. Who ever wants to finish a project?!?

ANYWAY this is my Deathguard Kill Team speedpainting project! I had like a day to get this lot done so I could play in GW Middlesbrough with my stepkids. Younger stepkid wanted a DG team and I had some from Conquest so...

First pic is after one hour (so, five minutes per mini), excluding drying time. I was able to take advantage of bad Army Painter spray consistency for once, rather than it ruining the project -- it gave some lovely tan / muddy patches. Basing time is included in the one hour, but assembly time isn't. This is essentially after a very quick and simple batch-basing job, then a green spray (I don't remember which one), then the patchy Army Painter necrotic flesh or equivalent, then some quick up-brushing in a couple of shades of paler green and greenish-yellow.

A plague marine and a couple of poxwalkers, now tabletop ready after a little more work. These and the rest of the pics are after another hour, basically, so a total of an extra five minutes per mini, mostly spent doing a few quick fleshy areas, some brassy dry-brushing on metal parts, and a generous load of washes. Loads of fun to paint, this lot.

Same for another group of three.

Champion and two poxwalkers.

And the last two marines.

All these will get revisited at some point but I may try to get the full DG army tabletop ready first.

Experimenting with a more desaturated look, this time using various Contrast paints over a zenithal highlight of Wraithbone ./ Mechanicus Grey. This is just an attempt to get some initial shading on the minis -- I've not added any metallics or washes yet, and there will doubtless also be final highlights once that's done.

Away from the plague marines for a bit and... let's have some more larp builds.

These are all for 40K larp games. I posted the Nerf guns I'd modded for Ork Larp upthread. Here's two shots of my final Cybork costume build, in play.

The mask is a generic eBay orc mask glued on to part of a generic eBay cyborg mask, but then I built up the eyes, nose, and cyber ear a bit. Scarf is just to hide my pink neck. T-shirt and shorts, from charity shop, distressed with various paints and stains. Leather jerkin is a WWII surplus one, adapted for larp some years back. Cybork chest is a harness from a rucksack, worn back to front, with a bunch of scrap hot-glued on and painted. Left (cyber) arm is mostly motorcycle armour, with the claw being an ancient Lego Bionicle foam claw. Right (orky) arm, not very visible, has a fibreglass pauldron at the top on which I painted checks then added some fake mud and blood. Chain-axe by ArtyFakes, bought second-hand. Left leg armour is surplus riot police kit.

Next is my take on a techno-barbarian Skitarius, based on Abnett's descriptions in Titanicus. Helmet is a modified Cyberman helmet from a charity shop, with added scrap, Milliput, foam, feathes, cables, and paint. Torso / neck armour is made from a muscle chestplate in fibreglass, second-hand; foam; plastic rivets; Milliput; the visor from a kid's knight helmet (charity shop again), paint, and a medieval leather collar. Right pauldron is mostly scrap and paint. Left is a polyurethane medieval style pauldron plus a foam bird skull mask.

Been a while since I updated here...

Tide of Traitors. For my Chaos forces in F28: War Always Changes, I can now field around 50 painted cultists. Still some basing needing doing. These are a mix of suborned Imperial Guard minis (classic Red Corsairs style approach of X-ing out the aquilas), some official GW Chaos Cultists, some Blackstone Fortress minis, some Tox Troopers from Miniatures of the North, and some Puppetswar future soldiers with Tormenters heads.

Deathguard: Also for F28 gaming, I've been painting up two Plagueburst Crawlers and three Blight-Haulers which are (still) almost done. Crawlers:

Pretty cool Frostgrave terrain Ian. I particularly like the spiral staircase to nowhere, it's a good way to make an access point to higher elevation with bridges. Death Guard are also looking suitably nasty!

The larp kit is also off to a good start, curious to see the final result.

Thanks Thumpingbear!

The exposed brain thing is being made by a friend who's just starting out as a pro prop builder, so it won't be my work, but I'll still doubtless show it off.

First miniatures painting of the new year, mostly so that next time we need to have an F28: War Always Changes combat in a cargo bay, we have painted cargo to hide behind. This is a mix of GW terrain, resin from Scotia Grendel, 3D prints from Dark Fantastic Mills, and scratch builds from food and drink lids. Quick & dirty rust paint job. The 3D prints had noticeable lines but rather than sanding them I just piled the paint on!

I am officially very bad at regularly updating this.

Here is a post of space dwarf progress for the year though...

This army has been put together with F28: War Always Changes, in mind, and I've played a game with it already.

In the main photo, in the background on the left we have three Automated Defence Platforms, each with twin LAT cannons, and their accompanying Sensor Platform (made by Daemonscape and Scotia Grendel respectively). Flying just behind them is an Ancestral Mystic (Move 12) represented as a hoverboarding dwarf; board by Satyr Art Studios and mystic by Macrocosm. Also well behind the lines with them is my scratchbuilt Dvergi Company HQ (Underground); CP Models do some great space dwarfs including vehicle commanders which are manufactured as upper body only, so one of those, with binoculars, is looking out of a hole in the ground to represent the Spotter, while a Leader mini from the same manufacturer is emerging from a tunnel mouth, and a partially buried antenna represents Communications. Middle rear is the three-compartment Dvergi ATC, a lovely 3D print from Watcorp, with three Robots, two from Reaper and one from Diehard.

Midground, left to right, we have four Bikers including another Ancestral Mystic, all by Ramshackle Games; and two squads of Freeholders with their scratchbuilt Tunnels. The Freeholders are a mix of manufacturers but most are by Hasslefree.

Finally in the foreground, again left to right, there's a Tunneler APC, made from a converted toy; a two-Dvergi heavy machinegun team, representing an HMG Pillbox; and a squad of Miners with their Forward Bunker.

Further photos show details.
