Morning Dakkaites! More madness from the mind of me, this time in a 30K flavour.
I bought the Horus Heresy books as they were released, and always planned to start a force but could never decide on a Legion. Then came Shattered Legions. Why just paint and play 1? So I bought a bunch of stuff including some 3rd party Salamander stuff from Spellcrow and started in.

The Emperor's Children came about because I found a bunch of MkIV armour pieces in a Sternguard Veteran box and decided to do a Veteran Sergeant in Artificer armour.

So far I only have the two Sergeants painted; a Salamander Breacher Sergeant in Artificer armour and the Emperor's Child. Still not sure what squad he'll lead; possibly a Tactical squad

Here's how they were last night

And here's this morning's work

Early days yet, but I already have 3 terminators prepped for Salamanders, and possibly a Praetor for the Emperor's Children

I'm tossing up between Sons of Horus/ Luna Wolves or Raven Guard for my third

Looking like a nice start, can't wait to see how these guys come out!

Thanks shasolenzabi and evildrcheese! Decided to go Raven Guard after all, the Dark Fury squad sold me. I'm still deciding on what Rite of War I go with, I'm leaning towards Pride of the Legion to represent that even the lowest Legionary is a veteran because of their experiences in the Istvaan system, and the Survivors of Istvaan one is locked out unless I switch the Emperor's Children with Iron Hands.

Some more work on the Salamanders, started on a Terminator, a Breacher with meltagun and almost finished the sergeant. Don't have all my bitz boxes with me or I'd have done more!

Good start for the Salamanders there!

Good GS-work. I really like the sculpting on the scales

Do you use black (or none) primer? It's pretty hard to get paint to stick well right out of the pot onto unprimed plastic. And difficult to get good coverage over straight black.

I think you'd get better coverage of your paints if you either "dust" black sprayed models with thin bursts of white from a top angle ("zenithal highlighting") or used a light grey primer.

Question, how are you able to post your pics? I'm following the instructions but not able to get anything going.

Thanks Nintura and Zywus!

Unfortunately, i can't claim the scales as mine- my GS work is terrible. The shoulder pads, meltagun, sergeant helm, torso and loincloth are all resin bitz from Spellcrow, their "Salamandra/ Dragon Knights" range. The shields are GW Lizardman shields.
I haven't primed either of these models, I'm away from home and forgot the spray paint. The zenithal lighting idea is a good one, I'll have to give it a try

So it turns out I once started a Salamanders force and then forgot them... Here's what I dug out of my not finished/ later box earlier today

I'm thinking the bionic head guy as Sergeant for my Legion Terminators, the Cataphractii as Praetor, and the actual lizard Salamander as a lightning claw terminator

Some work on the EC too, building a Tactical squad and painting the special edition Forgeworld dude in Tartaros armour with glaive as the leader of an EC Legion Terminator squad

Also decided to go with the Pride of the Legion, due to the sheer volume of Terminators I own

Very early shots of my Emperor's CHildren Legion Terminator Sergeant.

I haven't sorted out his head or his base yet, but I did put in an order for 2 sets of Legion Tartaros Armour to accompany him.

I was planning to add a squad of Phoenix Guard terminators to this army, but I figure as Fulgrim's bodyguard they probably weren't on Istvaan III to get virus-bombed

That will make a good base color for the Emperor's Children scheme

Got another Tactical Squad to paint as the Emperor's Children, and did some swapping to acquire Aquila breastplates from the 40K marines, pics to follow.

Thanks Shasolenzabi, I usually just give it a wash or two and a light drybrush and it comes out something like the sergeant I posted a bit earlier

Just started work on 5 veteran tactical marines for the Emperor's Children; the guy at the back will have a missile launcher but I'll leave that off until they're painted. My original Sergeant was going to go with these guys but I decided to move him sideways into an equally kitbashed Palatine Blades squad

An interesting blend of armies, and the command squad there looks like a good start for such.

looks cool so far! If I may reccomend: get a cheap spray primer from lowes or walmart, just to help the paint stick better

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

I use Rustoleum's Fkat Black. Cheap, and is wonderful, drying, and even if you oversprayed, the detail is as crisp as ever.

Thanks guys!

Shasolenzabi I'm going with as many eagle-centric bitz I can find for the EC, so even their little squad vexilla's look like something incredibly ornate; hopefully will work nicely with the more feral Salamanders and the stark darkness of the Raven Guard

Brennonjw and Lliu, thanks for the advice; somewhere I have several cans of black spray but I put them somewhere 'safe' so I can't locate them easily

Still working on the Shattered Legions, just having some time related issues.

Recently found an old Venerable Dreadnought model, the metal one with the massive wings across the sarcophagus, and decided to add some armour to the Emperor's Children contingent.

I need to glue his feet to the base, then drill and pin the legs; metal dreads are heavy! I'll also be swapping out his assault cannon arm for something else.... T/L lascannon perhaps?

Well the old Venerable Dreadnought looks like it will fit in well with your Emperor's Children. Twin-linked all the way...especially on single shot weapons.

Cheers,

Thanks Captain Brown, I'll go with the las. I have a plastic venerable dread weapon sprue somewhere.
Hey Shasolenzabi. You can never have too many boxes on legs. It's a little ornate for a 30K dready but it is the Emperor's Children.

I'm thinking, since Dreadnoughts don't get the Legiones Astartes special rules, of running a trio of dreadnoughts to represent each of the shattered Legions. So this guy would have a Raven Guard and a Salamander brother incoming.

Let me know what you think, and thanks for watching

So, finally got some work done on these gents:

Found the feet for the dreadnought

And he's a big sucker!

Also finished assembling the Terminator sergeant:

And put the shields on half of the Salamander Breachers

Thinking I'll be converting some spare Ravenwing bikes I have to Emperor's Children outriders,,, Stay tuned!

Still working slowly through the Salamanders Breachers, and I came up with a different, much easier to remember and brighter scheme for the armour. Thoughts?

Salamanders Breachers are looking good so far, love those shields. Really nice touch.

The EC dread works really well too. Great idea.

Thanks EDC, I should have a set of Lascannons for the EC dread by the end of the week. In the meantime, I finished that Breacher

I'm planning an old-school basing style; dark earth with slate and occasional tufts of grass something like a windswept highlands area. The idea is they regrouped on a small moon or planet out of the way of the war.

Like many people, I bought The Burning of Prospero. It wasn't even for the Space Wolves, although the special characters are sweet; it was simply to get a bunch of Mk III armour and Tartaros terminators easily. I've already used the characters in conversions, but I was still left with the Sisters of Silence and, most importantly, the Adeptus Custodes. I like how they're bringing hints of the Sisters into 40K, but to my mind the Custodes are a 30K only unit. So where better to put them than here?

Using the teaser rules from the White Dwarf, this is a minimum strength Custodian Guard Squad. I'm going full helmets for these guys, because I think they look cooler fully armoured. I'm till tossing up whether I keep the single handed spear or swap it for a two handed spear.

Yeah, Custodian Guard!

They do exist in 40k, but imagine they're only deployed in small numbers like a small elite strike force.

Looking forward to seeing these dude done.
