I am building an ork stompa using 3d printing, some GW bits, my own moulds and castings, and other materials

I don't overly like the design of the stompa. It kinda looks like a stack of cans or Rosie from the jetsons wearing a skirt. Orkey technology looks... well kinda like an ork. The front of the battlewagon with ram looks like an ork face with a gob, the dreads and kans looks like orks, so I'm coming up with a design. I want to use certain components of the original stompa model so that my guy is recognizable but change pose and some other details. I found the chest plate and gun and saw arms of a stompa on kijiji so I'm going to use them. Other components will be 3D printed or created using moulds.
Step 1. Basic Design: Here's where I'm at. I want to use the ... skirt? ... of the stompa but break it up into pieces and tilt it so that it has more of a ork-like / hunched over pose. I also want to expose the legs and hips for greater mobility. (How does a stompa stomp if it can't lift its legs?)

I was asked to make a custom stompa off an Imperial Knight a year or so back, might provide some inspiration?

Awesome. Nice work. I need to get my hands on some of that plasticard stuff, I've never tried working with it.

Can't wait to see what you do with the stompa, I'm not much a fan of the original model either.

Another idea that I have is regarding the transport and access point. If an ork were to carry something heavy it might wear a backpack and because the AP is at the rear I figured that the stompa could have a large freight container or sea can or battlewagon body or something on it's back. The AP could be a hatch that orks could drop out of, possibly via a chain or ladder.

This is just out there, but what if your Ork Stompa was styled like a Squig? A giant gob with legs, loads of guns in the gob?

Ya I've seen some mechanical squigs and they look great. Not the direction that I'm going in for this model but something that I would eventually put together.

Still working on basic anatomy. Here's where I'm at.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
The right shoulder pauldron is a battle wagon cab. The bw deck is in his back as a platform for a boss or something. The cab has 3 turrets for the big shootas. The tw big shoota and scorched are in doors on the chest. There is a sea can on his back to hold and deploy the 20 orks embarked.

*sigh* ...the penis gun. No. We're not doing that. I often wonder if the people that design these things really care about what there doing. There are character builds that have no models, models that don't have the load out that are described in the rules, and well... models with penis guns.

OK, no problem. The model just seems a bit, well, lacking, without it.
Are you instead going to incorporate the vertical-seamed double-door assault chute a la the current Gorkanaut / Morkanaut?
I can't see why that'd be a problem...

Well ya that was another consideration. Access point is at the rear so how to make a rear door that doesn't look like a but. That's where I came up with the backpack / sea-can idea. No penises no but holes!

Ork design is so awesome.
Run the giant leaky exhaust pipes through the enclosed infantry transport compartment? What could go wrong!
Edit: and to further that, really good job on the design there, I'd never thought to actually 3D model something before irreversibly cutting holes in things xD
Looks like a really promising design.

Methinks the seriousness of your design is less Orky than it might otherwise be - there's a certain juvenile humor in Orks that you're deliberately avoiding.

So much of the final product will be 3d printed so I do some basic modeling to figure out some problems that I couldn't otherwise do on paper, kinda like a maquette. EG:

OK. Life happened, big break, I'm back.
UPDATE: I've started working on the actual files.
The legs are complete.
The torso will be clad in panels made from plasticard, scrap bits, cardboard, whatever, so I'll print a frame to build off of.
The back will be a platform that looks like the back of a battlewagon where a mek boss can stand.
The head will double as a cockpit.
The shoulders will be a vindicator and a battlewagon front.
...now onto the upper torso.

I'm working on the "gob" now. (The jaw cover). I'm not in love with the actual model's gob or the forge world one. I've seen some people use a battlewagon ram as a gob, it's looks ok to me... I really like the style on the meganobs where the gob is actually attached/part of the chest armour, it's also kinda similar to the neck guard on the Khorne Lord of Skulls.
...still working on it

It's Sea-Can o-clock.
The stompa is going to be wearing a sea can like a back pack. This will represent it's transport capacity. I'm thinking about having some ork boys hanging out of it and looking out of holes.
I'm still deciding what to make it look like... modern sea-can? 40k Munitorum Armoured Containers? Any Ideas?

Well... I think it's done. The grey shapes will be printed, the white are 40k bits, wires, and bolts that I have and will attach when it's done. As you can see the body is just a frame, it will be covered in bits of scrap metal like the original stompa. I'll probably use plasticard or cardboard for this. ...I'm still not sure if I want to glue the scrap metal to the outside of the frame, or the inside and leave the frame visable.... inside maybe?
Unfortunately my guy's printer is down so I won't be able to print this for a while, or I pay more do have it done by someone else... but I'm cheap so I'll wait.
