Also, back 2 baseix sells polystyrene sheeting that might serve your needs, too.
Otherwise, any decent model store (model kits and/or model trains) will usually have the stuff. It's called sheet styrene and comes in thicknesses from 0.25mm up to 3mm ("Evergreen" branded stuff).

A lot of companies use styrene to print their advertisements on and throw them out when a new promotion begins. I stop by a cell phone retailer every now and then to pick some up and just cut it down into 1x1 sheets. Nice and cheap alternative if you can find the right place.

Check your local area for an industrial plastics store. They sell things like dropper bottles, those plexiglass display stands you see in stores, zip-lock bags etc. Mine also sells sheet polystyrene and its much cheaper than pre-packaged modelling supplies.

If you're going the mail order route, ask for 'sample' sizes. The ones I get are basically an a4 sheet cut in half which naturally reduces the postage by quite a lot.
