I am working on a Kislev KoW force, mainly as a hobby project, but the game seems very good as well, so I am aiming to make the army playable as well. Visit my blog if you want to see more of my army: mandollies.com

The army as it currently stands:

I have made up a 2k list, based mainly on the models I have and want to acquire, but also with some thought given to the playability of the army.
I think LoR seems to fit fairly well with my planned units, at least with some allies.

The list I have thought about aiming for as my first 2k list is:

1x Duke on Ancient Winged Alvarez, Potion of Haste (Ice Queen on Frost Dragon)
1x Wizard, Bane Chant, Inspiring Talisman (Ice sorceress)
1x Honor Guard Horde, Potion of Caterpillar (Gryphon Legion)
3x Halfling Ranger Cavalry Troops (Ungol Horse Archers)
2x Household Knights Regiments (Winged Lancers)
2x Halfling Volley Gun (Urugan Cannon)
1x Dwarf Ranger Captain, Wings of Honeymaze (Beast Shaman)
1x Dwarf Rangers Regiment (Kossars)
1x Dwarf Rangers Troop (Kossars)

The idea is to be able to do serious work in all phases, with an army that is fast, shooty and hard hitting.

The general plan is to have the Kossars on one flank, hopefully in terrain, harassing with bowfire and supporting / being supported by the main cavalry thrust going up the center. The Beast Shaman can support the Kossars, or if needed, can go bully some shooting horde, artillery etc with his very good mobility. (Fly, Spd 10, individual, vanguard)

The Gryphon Legion trottle up in the middle, with Lancers on each side and screened by the Ungol Horse Archers, with the Urugan Cannons following up behind the cavalry, probably towards the flanks to cover the largest area and protect against flankers. Any Ungols that survive can move to the sides to pick on flanks in late game.

The Ice Queen can be flexible, probably staying defensive and healing a bit, then taking advantage of any holes in the line when the lines clash.

How does it look?

The army looks gorgeous!

As for effectiveness, you'll probably struggle in some match-ups since you're very reliable on Thunderous Charge cavalry (though mitigated by the potion on the honor guard horde) and regular shooting which will struggle against a enemy with lots of stealth, or one that can afford to set up in terrain. But I think the army looks pretty well rounded and should be able to tackle most enemies.

Using Dwarf rangers as Kossars is pretty clever. They have really fitting stats when I think about it.

There is not this idea.

Beautiful army, and seems like a good setup to me.

Thanks, the main goal is for the army to look good

Seems LoR in general would have the issues you describe Zywus. Not much in the breath weapon department, and not great access to lightning either. Could of course shore that weakness up with allies somehow, but as you say, the dwarf ranger stats just fit so well for the Kossars, so nice to be able to use them like their warhammer counterparts.

For thematic reasons, I would probbably give the queen the diadem of dragon king, it feels wrong to see a dragon without a breath attack (or maybe a lightning bolt with the boomstick)

But playing the league for Kislev, you should really model some bear cavalry that you could use as the aralez knights. ^_^

I would like to find the points for the diadem, I agree the dragon should have a breath attack. Seems I have to give up too much to get it though.

I have considered bear cavalry, Tsar Boris is on the way, so some bear riders to join him would be nice, but I am currently thinking about taking the gryphon part of the "Gryphon Legion" a bit further and make mine ride actual demi-gryphs. There is a company making Polish-looking demi-gryphs that fit Kislev really well. They will fit more in with the winged lancers, although Bear riders are a separate level of cool, so still not sure what to go for (or if I should go for both)

You don't have the full rulebook yet ?

Hint : http://kow2.easyarmy.com is not only a very nice army editor, it has access to all options, including artefact (add the unit, then click on the green icon near the unit name to add options), and when you preview or export the list (top right buttons) you get the full text description or all special rules or upgrades, including artefacts.

Edit: or you were just implying that you cannot find the points for it in your list, and suddently I feel stupid ...

Congrats on a great looking army. I wish I could find the energy to paint my Kislev. I have a huge army of them I got back in 2006. At least once a year I pull them out, spread them all over the game table, then decide it's too much work and pack them up again Again, great looking force you have there

Thanks! It sure is a lot of work. I hate de-chaosifying marauder horses.

Let me know if you want to see them join the grand army of the Ice Queen

Exalt! I'm sure I've commented on your Kislev army somewhere, but here's a Dakka for really killing it. The D&D dragon really turned out brilliantly, and makes a great way to get the Tzarina into the list properly

Might be worth looking at Fireforge games medieaeval Russians as well for this great army.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Very nice dragon and ice queen, I can alsmost imagine hearing the Winged hussars song by Sabaton in the background so inspired I am by your kislev army (or maybe it's because it's in my currnet playlist )

More seriously, I own the old ice queen on horse model and it was much more crude that what you used, where did you find your ice queen model, did you convert or sculpt her yourself ?

Or was it some existing model that looked close enough to be used directly ?

@Salvage: Thanks

@Llamahead: Yes, I have seen the medieval russians, and they look like a good fit. Although I fear they are more realistic scale than even old GW? Do you have any fireforge yourself?

@jtrowell: I will check out that song Yeah, the old Ice Queen is really horrible, in my opinion, the decisively worst model in the otherwise great Kislev range.

My Ice Queen is made from:
- Crown from original Kislev Ice Queen
- The body and cloak from Morvahna the Dawnshadow from Hordes http://privateerpress.com/hordes/gallery/circle-orboros/warlocks/morvahna-the-dawnshadow
- Head from the main vampiress of the Coven throne
- Greenstuff (fur trims, hair)

I have also added the two magic users:

https://mandollies.com/2016/11/22/allor-the-amber-wizard/

Although from what I understand, my original plan to have the Dwarf Ranger Captain with wings will not work with the CoK ruleset? No magic items allowed on allies?

True. No magic items on allies. Also nu duplicate War Engines, Heroes or Monsters in allies, but other entries can be taken up to three times, so the two ranger units is allowed.

That is too bad, gotta redo my 2k list plans then.

I have taken my painted forces out for a spin, and I really like the speed of the list. The ranger cavalry did surprisingly well, while the Knight regiments felt a bit fragile. I felt like I was missing a substantial shooter to punish enemies maneuvering for advantage against my offensive forces, so I think the organ guns will fit in nice as an anchor for the aggressive part of the army.

Battle report from my first ever KoW game can be found here: https://mandollies.com/2016/12/05/battle-report-1-invade-1270pts-lor-vs-brotherhood/

Nice battle report.

Yeah the rangers are a very nice unique unit of the Brotherhood, but they are also very expensive, even with their decent nerve and stealthy, as they only have def3+. They really don't like being targetted by spells like lightning bolt pr fireball and breath attacks, and of course will fold fast in melee.

The fact that you had only one short ranged fireball (ice bolts) caster made it an ideal situation for them. Of course, with a cav army like yours you had the speed to reach them fast, so your opponent porbably had to invest some efforts to cover them.

Yes, I did catch them eventually, but I could not prioritize them early since he had a bunch of knights running around as well. At such small pts, they did feel dominating at times in that game.

I played one more game against the same brotherhood list, but with a new opponent controlling it. This time, the Rangers did not have such an impact:

Well, the rangers are really a very good unit, they are almost mary-sue level when you look at their profile :

- Ra 4+ with elite, so they shoot as well as elves, but with added Piercing(1)
- They are a troop, but still get 10 attacks (usually ranged troops only have 8), in fact with Me4+ they are more of an hybrid melee/ranged unit
- they are a troop but get a nerve value fit for a regiment
(combined with the previous point, another way to look at them might be to say that they are a regiment with the footprint of a troop stats-wise)
- They also get stealthy and vanguard, they are only missing nimble to be the ultimate rangers
- as a bonus theyr inspire villeins units (and of course themselves)
- they count as villeins so benefit from the Valliant rule

*but* then you look at their point cost and realise that for this amount you could buy things like a whole horde of decent infantry or a giant ...

They are indeed pricey, one of the good things of Kings of War seem to be that things are generally very fairly costed.

I have started work on a pricey unit myself. I decided to go for bear cavalry over demi-gryph mounted Gryphon Legion as it is better supported by the fluff and because it looks even cooler

Hoping that these guys can also make my opponents cry OP

Also finished up two Urugan Cannons: https://mandollies.com/2016/12/27/kislev-urugan-cannons/

Since the ranger captain with wings is out, I have been looking at the 2k list again and I am currently at this:

1x Duke on Ancient Winged Alvarez, Ensorcelled Armour (Ice Queen on Frost Dragon)
1x Baron, Horse (Boyar)
1x Wizard, Bane Chant, Inspiring Talisman (Ice sorceress)
1x Honor Guard Horde, Potion of Caterpillar (Sons of Ursun)
3x Halfling Ranger Cavalry Troops (Ungol Horse Archers)
1x Household Knights Regiment, Potion of Caterpillar (Winged Lancers)
1x Household Knights Regiment, Potion of Haste(Winged Lancers)
1x Household Knights Troop
2x Halfling Volley Gun (Urugan Cannon)
1x Halfling Archer Horde, fire-oil (Kossars)

This is 1955 points. Not totally happy with the Kossars as archers, but I think I need a hero that can disrupt shooters, and the ranger captain seems too expensive without the wings. Using several hundred points on dwarf rangers without inspiring also seem sub-optimal. The Kossars could also be used as city militia for +10pts. Not sure how to get this to 2k, any suggestions? More magic items? Less items and another unit?

Your bear cavalry is awesome, but it seems that you used only 3 models for a horde ? This might cause some confusion, and is under the minimum recommended by the FAQ, so be aware that some tournaments might refuse them.

If you cannot fit a 4th bear, maybe you might try to have at least an additionnal smaller model on the unit base like maybe a normal cavalry model on horse. The unit might then be described as being some commander on horse with his bear escort or something similar ?

Please note that the unit looks really good already and I would have no problem to play against it once explained that it is a horde, i am mainly thinking of preventing potential problems in pickup games or tournament. If you only play with friends it probably won't be a problem anyways.

Thanks

In the blog post there is an overhead shot, it shows that it will be very challenging to be able to fit 4 on a base. I am not too worried about it, rule of cool and common sense will probably go a long way

I also base characters on round bases after all

Fantastic models. Those Mierce guys truly know their stuff.

Those urugan cannons are Branzinos galloper guns crew with metal dwarf organ guns right? Such a simple but very effective kitbash.

You could perhaps find a small bear model and mount a halfling rider or something similarly small on? Or just a smaller bear tagging along, running between the legs of it's larger brethren. You could say it's a bear trainee. It would up the cuteness level of the unit quite a bit if nothing else

I don't foresee you having much problems with the bear cavalry representing a horde, but it's always nice to be technically correct (the best kind of correct) with your basing.

Lovely army - I've not faced Rhordians yet so probably not best placed to comment on effectiveness of build, but I noticed your comment earlier about Fireforge vs GW in scale for the medieval Russians.
Coincidentally enough someone posted a pic of a reg in the KOW Facebook group he'd made from Fireforge Russians and GW empire, and I think they look great!:

Those are sergeants I believe, but it is a nice pic of scale. While I like them, I now have plans for Kreml Guard with GW parts. That will be a while before happens though.

However, there is a tourney this weekend, my first for KOW, so I will soon get to pick up some experience in playing cavalry heavy LoR. I have picked up some painting traction and first out of the gate is a mounted Boyar.
More pics can be seen at the blog:
