At the risk of sounding like a crybaby...why is this here? I know Dakka requires ads revenue to stay aloft...but is this something strictly on my end? Or is this a Dakka site deal?

As far as I can tell, Dakka's adverts come through Google's AdSense, which is supposed to only offer adverts tailored to a site's content, but this can occasionally end in rather strange interpretations and odd ads being generated.

I think there's the ability to block specific ads, though, so it should just be a case of flagging when an anomalous advert appears and letting lego take take of it.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Google chooses ad content based on the 'topic' of the host site and your internet history, with the occasional oddity thrown in to keep everyone on their toes. The ads you see won't necessarily be the same ads anyone else sees.

That's what I figured was the case...now I'm seeing ads for Pumpkin Ice Cream...I guess some of it is coming from left field.

The Pumpkin part or the 'Meet Filipino Women' part?

Just where have you been on the Internet?

I only go to Reddit, Netflix, YouTube, the SWToR forums, the WoW forums, and Dakka.

Even if we talked about illicit content I look at...I don't specifically look at anything "Asian"...so I honestly have no clue.

Nah, I'm fairly sure the various dating ads have a fairly broad scope for who they're shown to.

MOM? Mail-Order-Mods?

Could those ads take cues from news articles that are read by a user? With President Duterte in the news I wonder if you got tagged as a Filipino-interested party based on any articles you may have read about the Philippines.

The bewildering ones I get, are for converting to Islam, and various other religions.
I can only assume the wordcount in Off Topic contributes, because I have no curiousity in those areas.

Ha!

Based on that, I'm really curious to know just how they do define their search/display parameters!

Google probably figures that a forum full of middle-aged toy soldier nerds probably needs a link to mail-order brides.

Something that may be sinister or may be a coincidence:

I noticed an ad for Clearly.ca, an eyeglasses site. I don't need glasses and haven't searched for them at all.

My daughter is getting glasses however, and I have been discussing this with my wife through text via skype.

Does adsense read my fething skype conversations as well as my google search history?

We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".

Skype is invasive as hell. The adverts from my Skype are all based on things I have looked at online.
Sometimes the specific site I used (amazon).

I wonder if information from one of the spammer threads got picked up during a Google sweep before the mods were able to lock it down.
