If you go far back enough, past Maldred, Merovich, the Red Pox, etc. one can find a rather normal history to the creation of the duchy of Mousillon....

.....well, except that part when Landuin rides home after winning the battle with the greenskins only to find his duchy besieged by Undead...

Which leads to the question - what is the Original curse on Mousillon? Because Landuin didn't provoke it...

Is it something from the dim elder past when the Elves used to walk around the land? Curse of a Ruinous Power? An ancient necromancer?

Or is it just one of those unlucky places that just......I guess.. naturally raises the Undead for no apparent reason?

And on a Real World Side Note - does anyone know where they got the inspiration for Mousillon? It feels like Lovecraft's Dunwich or Innsmouth..... just with less cosmic horror and more undead.

It's rather unknown. The troubles did start after the undead attack during Landuin's time which is heavily implied to have started from a Necromancy curse but everything else is only hinted at.

Since then it has been a hotbed for undead activity from once housing the Black Grail (the only thing able to make undead Grail knights) to having a entire ghoul kingdom underneath it.

The land is so tainted that the dead raise themselves and any river structures, like inns, outside Mousillon will have defenses pointing towards the river at undead frequently get washed down stream.

No idea on it's inspiration, unfortunately. (Though Innsmouth is a good similarity)

I think it had something to do with the Red Duke.

Nah, the Red Duke was centuries after the curse on Mousillon. That started in Gilles' time.
