Pics

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ten painted scions. Also got another 10 part built for 2 ten man squads, and a built command squad with 4 volley guns. Aim to sculpt 2 5 man melta squads.

The squats in painting will finish my vet guard squads. 5 squads, in with option to be melta or plasma, and 2 plasma and 2 melta. The command squad has 3 plasmas and the standard, as i wanted to use the cool model. Sculpted two commanders cause it was fun, so blah. Most squats have sculpted beards, shades, or something to make them look less samey. Mostly plastic, which i prefer to metal. So far got flesh done and moving onto red.

Scion commander and commanders of squat prepainting. Oddly pics showing on my phone as sideways, but hey ho. Theme for commanders is big beards, axes, peg legs, cigars and eyepatches.

Command squad with volley guns. Not sure how well balanced the volley guns look, maybe too back heavy, but came out okay. Much happier with commander with power mace/club thing

Too lazy to paint, so put some arms on scions. Feeling good abput squad leader with bolt pistol. Just need to bulk arm out with a bit of milliput and it'll look good.

5 scion conversions closer to completion. Another 4 done later on, so only one more to go.

Got a bit more painting done. Just need two more highlights and red sections will be finished. I had forgotten how tough batch painting can be.

Not squats, but an army I sold on ebay. Bit gutted but I dont need two vet lists, and while an arbrite army is cool it is not squat cool. I had originally wanted the enforcers to be my vet list, and my squats to be infantry blobs, but i ended up making my squats vets as the stats seemed more squat-like. Got some lovely ebay feedback so looks like they found a good home.

Begining of scion conversions. Some will require more work than others. The sqauts where damaged models, mostly donated by kind members of a facebook group (you know who you are, thanks for help). Estimate they'll be done march, based on current laziness.

Where I am with my scions. Guildmasters are commissars, though may change their weapons to axes or at least smaller more balanced looking swords. Both plasma gun squads are now almost completed sculpted. Squats without arms will be sculpted soon. Will make 2 five man melta squads, a melta command squad, and a five man flamer squad. Plan to try and press mould another 5 scions to add to flamer squad. Had tried to use the press mould method before, but realised it'll only work if I do it before I put on the backpacks, visors, and helmet fins.

Group shot of vet list. Pics a bit washed out, but you get the idea. Loads of painting to do. Once finished and varnished maybe get some coloured shrubs for bases to add a bit of contrast. Seeing as painr scheme is basically greens, reds, and black think id go for a blueish shrub for contrast.

But more painting done on arms and hats. Still not sure what colour to paint my commanders coat. I was thinking a dark grey. I feel painting whole coats green would make the models overly green, so just painting hems green.

Nice. Always cool to see an unusual army. Thanks for sharing, I've got some more inspiration for my eventual squat army

Thanks. They are a fun army to do, but the plastic squats can be a pain to work with. Awful mould lines, hard to get plastic squats in good condition on the cheap, and only three basic types. Moreover, they tend to look very samey unless you sculpt little bits on them like beards and shades. Despite that the details are great, the bald head with the shades is great to sculpt on, and your models will prob be in full cover at all times (though unable to return fire as they cant see over the wall).

Another green highlight done, a highlight then that colours done. Also chose colour for commanders coats. Going for a dark grey. I hate painting black, so any colour that lets me avoid it is good really, and it will be dark enough that the collars and cuffs will still pop.

Been struggling to get sufficent time and motivation to paint, though i've managed to get a bit further on in highlighting the green sleeves. To distract myself i've had some fun painting eyepatches and coats on my command figures, and have made a start on the standard bearer. I have uni work to finish, so will have to take a step back for a bit. Hopefully i'll still get time to sculpt here and there, so can give the scions some love.

Bit more work on sculpting, allowing me to avoid painting. Milliput sculpts, and curretly working on collars. Need to shave them down once they dry, then I can begin helmets.

20 sculpts half done, really shaping up now. Thinking 2x 5 man melta. 5 man flamer. Command with plasma. Also tempted to try press moulding again, before i sculpt anymore detail. Could add 5 to flamer squad to bring it to 10. Last time i tried to press mould it was a disaster but hoping itll work better due to lack of detail at this stage. Any experiences of press moulding would be welcome?

First press moulded scion was awful, but next two are much better (they are two up front on clean bases). Had to use grenades to cover a point that keeps coming out of the mould badly, and the feet details keep coming out badly (note half of the foot was so bad i cut oit off and will resculpt it), but overall im happy with what ive managed to achieve.

Time for quick bit of army fluff, somewhat inspired by the way both Trump and Brexit have affected people. I'm not trying to make any value judgments through my fluff, but am interested in the way the same event is creating such a polarized reaction, with one side being depicted as overly pessimistic, and the other side being depicted as naïve.

I am basically building two armies, who I see as being the two different reactions to the plight of the squats. One side is my mech vet list, who are the remnants of a cluster of squat home worlds. Whilst they have succeeded in surviving the tyranid onslaught, they have endured massive casualties, resulting in a crisis within squat culture and identity. The survivors are rebuilding their forces, and on a galactic scale are roughly equivalent to the Tau, being unable to rival the power of the Imperium of man, but having the potential to grow again and become a more powerful race. Since the great tryannic wars the survivors exhibit a more antagonistic relationship with the imperium, having become more insular, and less trusting of other races. Some of the older squats worry that their race has become arrogant, and is in danger of angering the imperium, whilst others argue that the imperium had betrayed its duties to the squats, when it declined to help in the fight against the Tyranids. These individuals have the ear of the leading councils, and have been able to sway the new Squat empire into asserting its independence from the imperium.

Since the destruction of the old clans, squats are now lead by the Guilds, who helped build new cities, and led the effort to reclaim old holds. Squats began to cluster around these individuals, replacing the old clan system with guild allegiance, led by elected councils. Membership of these councils is based on wealth, prestige, ability and honour. Only the most charismatic and powerful squats can hope to join these councils, or gain the favour of their rulers, and as a result many squats can be seen on the battlefront wearing elaborate hairstyles, and feigning indifference to the destruction around them.

Whilst many squats are satisfied with this society, others have been traumatized by the destruction wrecked during the tyrannic wars, and have began to form into a doom cults (as represented by my scion list). They are known as the nameless ones. These individuals see squat society as essentially doomed, and have taken a vow to do all they can to delay this end, by donning the cult's armour and selling their lives dearly on the front lines of the most destructive warzones. To join the cult these individuals must shave off their beards, and renounce both their identity, and all of the personal honour they had accumulated. Their wealth is then collected and used to fund the cult, who use their finances to buy the best weaponry, bought from the guildmasters, who control the factories.

The nameless ones are reviled within squat society, as the denial of personal honour is seen as a heresy. Despite this the armies of the squats are often reliant upon these individuals, and as a result have been forced to accept them. On the battlefield the nameless ones are often accompanied by junior members of the guilds, so that they can be watched over to ensure that their actions are compliant with the squattish way of war. Dark rumours surround the nameless ones, alleging that they have used dammed technology, increasing their numbers through cloning. This would be an affront to all other squats, as the thought of a life without ancestry is abborent within squat society. Furthermore, it is rumoured that the nameless ones favour a reunification with the imperium, viewing it as the only way to secure a future for squats in a hostile universe.

A civil war threatens to break out, and other factions prepare to take advantage and steal the technology of the squats. It is a dangerous time, and noone knows how it will end.

Did five pressmoulds in the end. I was having issues getting the feet to cast right, which is why 3 of them have peglegs now, as you can see in pics. I feel if I did it again I could get it to work better, but figured getting five models out of it was good enough for my needs.

I also pulled the head off one sculpt and put a head from the plastic squats on it (the one with hat with hat and beard removed).

Just visor, helmet fin, and backpacks to sculpt now.

Behold the army of tiny eggs!

Seriously though, they're looking good. It must be a real slog but it'll look awesome when it's done.

Keep it up!

Thanks, someone had actually pointed out they look a bit penis-like before I put the fins on them, so eggsy is an improvement. I actually find the sculpting relaxing, its the painting that's the slog, which is why I haven't did any for ages now. Will need to hop back on the painting station soon if I'm ever going to get my Vets finished, but with a dissertation to complete, and a needy pet dog, finding the time and the motivation is impossible at the moment.
