Hey there!

So, my new project will take a lot of extra things beyond the standard "Buy, build, paint." Most notably, I need to get a lot of round bases: a bunch of 40mm for Ogres who are on square bases, and a handful more for random infantry on square bases or no base at all...

SO, I tried trimming the edges off of a square base. It technically works but it is hard and annoying, as well as not quite right. Does anyone know of a cheap but durable material that I can craft bases out of? Particularly something that I can cut up nice and easy. Cork? Some form of plastic that you can find in bulk? Has anyone else been in this situation?

The correct question is, would I be enjoying this hobby if I did this?

The correct audience is you.

One thing I like to use is either milliput or an air-dry modeling clay, and use a roller from greenstuffworks.

It allows you to make a large flat sheet and roll the design onto it, and cut out the size of bases you need with a sharp hobby blade and a ruler afterwards.

I would grab a hole saw of the right size and cut them out of MDF or HDF. Failing that, there are a ton of places that sell inexpensive bases. Check Ebay, and Litko.

So, you're not wanting to buy actual bases? Renedra make circle 40mm bases for a very reasonable price.

Reaper makes some good bases, Litko is as mentioned a good alternative

Also you could cut your own, not sure on all sizes but I know you can get the kind of cutters used to cut doorknob area out - just line up a few sheets of 1/4" plywood and start cutting (well, prolly want to clamp them).

Or you can get some polystyrene and do the same.

Also, craft stores with wood working, and wood dowels - or models - usually have some different size rounds that would probably work as well.

Tbh I should think it'd be just as easy to buy some cheap bases off ebay or what not too.
