Hello, Dakka, nice to be here again!

I've recently started playing X-Wing and I've decided that Imperium is my faction.
There are couple of lists that I've considered, one even saw a little game testing.

List 1: so, I heard the TIE Advanced sucks, eh?

Lituenant Colzet (TIE Advanced)
- TIE/x1
- Fire-Control System

Commander Alozen (TIE Advanced)
- TIE/x1
- Guinance Chips
- Proton Rockets
- Sensor Jammer
- Trick Shot

Wampa (TIE Fighter)

Soontir Fel (TIE Interceptor)
- Royal Guard TIE
- Autothrusters
- Push the Limit
- Stealth Device

Heavily influenced by jafar_ironclad (https://www.reddit.com/r/XWingTMG/comments/4bpij7/guide_tie_advanced_quick_build_guide/)
Give credit where credit is due, a good read for a beginner. (Any opinions on this text?)

List 2: swarm or aces? Why not both!?

Carnor Jax (TIE Interceptor)
- Royal Guard TIE
- Autothrusters
- Push the Limit
- Stealth Device

Deathfire (TIE Bomber)
- Guidance Chips
- Plasma Torpedoes
- Seismic Charges
- Extra Munitions

Howlrunner (TIE Fighter)
Academy Pilot (TIE Fighter)
Academy Pilot (TIE Fighter)

So, there they are. All c&c appreciated.

I see the synergies you,re trying for on Colzet & Alozen, but that's a fait bit of points on marginal situations. Sure, with lucky dice and ballsy maneuvers, you'll pull them off. Rarely twice against the same opponent, though.

If you want to field Tie/X1s, why not just go with Tempests with Accuracy Correctors and Vader-to-the-nines instead?

Tempest Squadron Pilot (21)
Accuracy Corrector (0)
TIE/x1 (0)

Tempest Squadron Pilot (21)
Accuracy Corrector (0)
TIE/x1 (0)

Tempest Squadron Pilot (21)
Accuracy Corrector (0)
TIE/x1 (0)

Darth Vader (29)
Juke (2)
Advanced Targeting Computer (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)
TIE/x1 (0)

Total: 99

Second list... I see Deathfire as a nice, juicy target. Seismic Charges require you to get up close and personal with the enemy, and a good PS to make sure your opponent doesn't use post maneuver re-positioning to just avoid the fireworks. You could keep Jax and just use Deathfire's points to add to your proto-swarm.

If you want c&c, it would be useful to provide lists we can quickly fiddle with in a list builder, rather than have to recopy everything manually. At least give us a list total so we know if you have spare points/an initiative bid we can play with.

Main problem with the Advanced is without the Title and ACT is it simply doesn't have the output, and whilst some of the named pilots, well Juno, could be good the simple truth is a) Vader trumps the lot of them b) there are other ships in the same price range that are flat out better, Quiz, O Leader, Ryad

Those last three actually all fit on a list, together:

"Omega Leader" (21)
Juke (2)
Comm Relay (3)
Stealth Device (3)

The Inquisitor (25)
Push the Limit (3)
Proton Rockets (3)
Autothrusters (2)
TIE/v1 (1)

Countess Ryad (34)
Push the Limit (3)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
TIE/x7 (-2)

Total: 99

Thanks for all the input!

Sorry, I forgot to add the point values. Both lists are exactly 100 points (as you may have figured out already).

Give credit where credit is due, a good read for a beginner. (Any opinions on this text?)

Opinion: the build guides are worthless. They do, by sheer quantity of builds, usually manage to include the viable ones but they have an incredibly poor signal to noise ratio. Most of the builds are hopelessly bad and only included out of some weird obsession with making every single pilot have a build of some kind. And, besides the builds being bad, the advice on why they're "good" is often very misleading for a new player. Throwing a bunch of clever names on the builds doesn't make them worth paying attention to.

I think it's safe to assume that any text that provides a build for every pilot isn't one that's meant for pure competiveness.

I figured that the point was more like: these are the best ways to fly these pilots. Se yeah, I took the advice with a grain of salt.

The article itself claims that TIE Advanced isn't optimal, but there are still a few reasonable builds.
How do you feel about those builds? Is Vader the only one worth flying?

Pretty much.

I resisted the idea that only Vader was useful for a while, mainly because I wanted to use Juno Eclipse (or try to cram a Advanced Maarek into a list that wouldn't fit his Defender). And you end up with something that's just as expensive in points (w/in 1-3 say) and simply doesn't work as well.

Given the scarcity of green on the Adv dial, PTL is _much_ weaker than Vader. And those advanceds need the bonus action a lot.

The issue is that it's presented as if those options are viable, and doesn't make it clear that 99% of them (including the ones on every other guide they've written) are complete garbage. It's information overload, and the newbies that actually benefit from build guides are going to have a hard time telling the difference between the few viable bids and all the random clutter.

Is Vader the only one worth flying?

Pretty much. You might be able to come up with a niche role for one of the others, but the only one really worth considering is Vader. PS 9 and action economy is far better than any of the other options in the vast majority of lists. The one exception is that accuracy corrector generics might make a comeback in a different meta, but right now two hits isn't enough to threaten any of the popular ships.

I agree, as much as I love using my Vader, Maarek, Juno list, Vader does all the work. Juno isn't bad for her flexibility, but she still isn't Vader.
