Alright I have a modification to my decimator/defender list that I need clarified. I know the one combo in this works, and the delivery method is good, but the last part of the exchange I'm not clear on what happens.

So I have:

RAC with predator, engine, Palpatine, Kylo Ren
Maarek Stele (defender) with juke and x7 title

RAC sets up the target with Kylo, Maarek comes in for the kill with a crit boosted from Palpatine (hopefully didnt need it for defense) and pushed through from juke.

Critical damage is taken, so "I'll show you the dark side" triggers, instead dealing a face-up pilot card. (When you suffer critical damage during an attack, you are INSTEAD dealt the chosen faceup Damage card) Maarek then triggers, and replaces that card with 3 drawn from the deck and I choose what I want. (When your attack deals a face up Damage card to the defender, INSTEAD draw 3 Damage cards, choose 1 to deal, and discard the others)

So critical damage is suffered (shields or not), Kylo deals a face up card instead of the damage, Maarek's 3 drawn cards are used instead of Kylo's crit.

So the question is what happens to the "I'll show you the dark side" pilot crit? Is it returned to the card, as another crit was used instead of the pilot crit? Is it discarded? Is it returned to the damage deck? Does the condition fall off the target ship?

Nothing happens to it. Maarek's ability replaces the effect that causes the card to be dealt, it just sits on the condition card waiting to be used.

Note that the rest of the interaction is not as certain as you think it is. Supposedly the question of what exactly counts as "by your attack" has been ruled differently at different events, and is likely to be FAQed in the near future.

That seems pretty cut and dry to me. Ive read that a lot of places have clarified Darth Vader and Kylo not working together, as Darth Vader specifies AFTER you attack, but Maarek and Kylo work just fine. Both trigger from dealing critical damage. (maarek's just activates when Kyle's card comes into play, but that card is STILL a result of your attack)

So since the crit stays on the condition card, the condition token is still on the target ship, right?

The issue is whether Maarek gets to pick one a card when a ship takes a "major explosion" card and rolls the hit for extra damage. Is it still considered part of Maarek's attack when another card deals a face-up damage card because of something that happenedin Maarek's attack? It has been ruled both ways at major events recently, so whatever your preferred interpretation may be it's likely to get FAQed in the near future and there's no guarantee that FFG is going to go with strict RAW.

Correct. The only way for the condition to leave is if something explicitly says it is removed, and only two things can do this: applying it to another ship (because it is unique), or the "if there is no damage card" trigger being met. Neither thing happens, the condition stays just like it isn't removed if the ship it's on takes a target lock.

It seems like a nasty combination but (aside from my thematic objections to having kylo and Palpatine in the same list ) that's a lot of points in a large base ship with no evade dice base. For half points that's 32... and getting a deci to half or killing it is, if not trivial, certainly not terribly hard.

The other potential problem is that Maarek doesn't have a way to generate crits after Palpatine is killed or if you need to use Palpatine on defense. Maybe score/debt on him? Just my thoughts...

You can run the decimator like an AWAC. You don't have to have Chiraneau, either. Any pilot can work with him, just give it Kylo, palp, and an engine upgrade. Since the condition doesn't leave the target, the decimator can boost out of arc and stay at r3+ if it wanted. Chiraneau is just there for his high PS, and synergy with Kylo.

Score or debt would be interesting, but juke is my go-to for Maarek. It pushes the damage he needs through. If he naturally gets a crit, that's most likely going through from juke. Palpatine just ensures that he will almost always have the opportunity, and can add additional hits/crits to ensure one gets through.
