Hello all. I am working on trying to drum up some interest at my FLGS for DZC, and the best way I could think to do that would be to have some fully painted armies to lend out and a nice board to play on. So with that idea in mind, I bought a starter army for each of the five factions to paint up. Since I am a relatively inexperienced painter and have always struggled to finish off projects, I thought that I would post my progress here on Dakka in order to motivate myself and hopefully get some good feedback.

My ultimate goals for this project are:
1) Have 5 painted starter armies
2) Build a board and terrain to match the armies
3) Improve my painting techniques as I go
4) FINISH THE PROJECT!

So with that said, I have just about finished my first army: the PHR. I'll give a couple notes and thoughts here before the pictures.
*I have tried to set up a decent light box. I hope that they are good enough to see what I have done so far. I will continue to try and improve my picture taking. Tips would be greatly appreciated.
*I have based the walkers because I wanted more stability and I like making bases anyway. They add negligible height to the model ( took one of the new 32mm 40k bases and clipped off the sides).
*I have heavily washed this army to the point where it has pooled in multiple places. While this was slightly heavier than I originally intended, this is the look that I was going for. I want all of these armies to look like they are in the middle of a warzone. As much as I like the brightly colored and fresh out of the factory armies, I was going for a different look.
*I am strongly considering giving a matte finish to everything, as the shade I was using seems to be giving a glossy finish. I kind of like it on the mud, as it makes it look wetter. But I think it may be off putting on the actual models. Thoughts?
*Until I decide on the finish, the bases are not 100% done as I want to add some vegetation to the terrain. My goal is to make it look like they are fighting over an abandoned and overgrown city.

And now, what you have all probably been waiting for... Pictures!

Very good. Nice clean pattern and well painted. Only thing I can think of is your second last pic maybe a black wash over the white/beige colour to make all the lines pop out. Maybe the light is just reflecting it out but otherwise I have no other criticism.

Thanks for the response I can see what you mean. In person, there is a bit better definition on the lines. I'm definitely still trying to play with my lighting when taking pictures to show that better.

I have been surprisingly productive this weekend and finished my second army in a couple days! I'm not sure why I've been more motivated. I think it's because unlike painting warhammer models, I can block out the base colors for an entire army over the course of a movie or two. Either way, I'm hoping it continues.

So here is the UCM. I tried to go with a very utilitarian look. Minimal colors, almost all grey. The main spots of colors are the viewing screens (forgive my English, can't remember what they're called) for the tanks and aircraft. I also tried to go a little more vertical for the terrain on the troops. As with the PHR, I'm waiting on getting a matte spray and some foliage for the bases.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with these. I think the shading came out a lot better. I also really like the viewing screens on the dropships. In person, you can just barely see the pilot inside. I actually used Blood for the Blood God technical paint to shade it.

As always, let me know what you think

I like it. I don't know what to do with mine so I put them on hold. Nice seeing this. I really like what you did with the bases for your troops. Nicely done.

I think you should give it all a matte spray, personally. You could always paint some gloss varnish (ardcoat, for example) onto the mud to get it shiny again.

I think the armies in general could do with a bit of highlighting, even if it's just going over the more colourful areas to bring them out a bit, add a bit of contrast and more importantly visual interest. Good job though, and a nice idea to provide these armys for people to borrow. That's a cunning way to get people playing your favorite game!

Very nice project so far! Definitely agree with giving them a matte spray and re-glossing where needed. Interested to see where you go with the other forces.

Thanks mate! The bases are super simple to do. Just Stirland mud and some chopped up spruces. I'm hoping the foliage will blend the two elements together even better.

Yeah, that's a good point. I'm going to do a little research to see what the right spray is for what I want.
I see what you mean about the highlighting. However, I am worried that if I highlight the UCM and the PHR, I will lose the more realistic feel and move back towards the more cartoony look that some colorful armies have. So I'm not sure if I'm confident enough in my skills to do it right.

Thanks man!

Thanks for all the replies so far. Glad to see this is picking up some interest

I have just finished my 3rd starter army in 10 days! I was totally not expecting this to go so quickly, but I'm not complaining.

For this army, I have tried to go for a more Alien (the movie) feel. The army is all a dark green which I then washed with a very watered down mix of Tin Bitz. This has the effect in person to give the vehicles a slightly metallic shine, which I am really happy with. I am hoping the pictures show this off, but I don't think it does a good job. I alternated between natural light pictures and edited ones to try and show the color better. Either way, here is army number 3: the Scourge!

Overall Army:

Tanks:

Warriors and Transports:

Dropships:

I am very happy with this army as well. It was quite simple to do, yet it comes off as very unique and alien when compared to the other two. Overall I think it has a sleek, predatory look which is perfect for the Scourge.

The next army will be the Shaltari. This one will likely take me much longer than the first three, as there are a ton of details and I really want to do justice to these models. They are absolutely stunning!

I would also like to ask if anyone has a recommendation for matte spray? I am quite cautious on picking one right now, as I have heard plenty of horror stories about these sprays filming up and ruining models. So if anyone has a recommendation or a suggestion, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for the comments so far all!

That's different. Green eyes. I thought they were sick or from Nurgle at first. A nice change from all the red all the time. Just need a little highlight like a dot or something in the corner to make them pop more.

Thanks mate! I like that idea. I'll add a white dot to the lenses when I go back through to do the matte spray.

ITS ALIVE!!!

Ahm... Hi there. It's been about a month since my last post. As I predicted, this most recent army gave me some more trouble. Combined with some real life responsibilities, it's been a while. But I'm back! And I have tiny painted miniatures to show.

I can't stress enough how beautiful these kits are. There is a ton of detail on these for how small they are. In particular the gates (both the Eden medium gates and the Haven terragates) have so many cool details. However, that also means it takes a lot more time to paint than the utilitarian designs of the UCM and the PHR, at least for me. So take that as a half-apology, half-excuse for my tardiness.

But enough talk. It's time for pictures.

Shaltari Starter Army

Eden Gates

Tamahawk and Kurki Tanks

Braves and their Haven Gates:

I really love the extremely dark purple for these. I hope it comes out in the pictures, but in person they look sleek and deadly (IMO).

As I've said before, I will be going back over everything with a matte spray to counteract the gloss shade. However, after that, I will be adding gloss to the black viewing screens on the tanks and gates in order to give them a future-techy look.

I've also decided to do the bases all at the same time in order to give some consistency between the armies and for the board I will eventually make. If you want an idea of the look that I am going for, check out this wonderful P&M blog by Stevefamine here: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/701705.page
His terrain is exactly the look I'm going for: armies fighting over cities that have been abandoned for 100+ years. Obviously my painting skills are nowhere close to as good as Steve's, but this isn't a competition.
For example:

I will also be using the 40mm round spawn bases from 40k as the bases for all of my drop ships and give them the same terrain treatment as my infantry bases. I've seen some cool conversions using them, and I'm not a fan of the clear squares bases.

But before I can get to all of that, I need to start the final army: Resistance. I've always been a big fan of Mad Max and other nuclear apocalypse style movies, so expect this army to sway much more to the feral side of the resistance.

As always, comments and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for taking a look!
