I am very interested in getting started with LOTR and the Hobbit, but I have some questions. Can The Hobbit and LOTRs squads and characters be played together. I'm thinking going with dwarves, but do I just have to have dwarves or can I have multiple different factions in an army as long as they are good. Also what is a good start in terms of miniatures and books. Thanks, in advance

The only hard division in the game is good and evil. Any good forces can be in a good army, and any evil forces can be in an evil army. You just can't mix good and evil.

That said, the game uses warbands as the basis of list building. A warband consists of 0-12 warrior and one hero. The warriors and hero must be from the same army list. In your example, you could have 12 Iron Hills Dwarfs and Dain as one warband, and 12 Mirkwood Rangers and Legolas as another warband both in one army.
