Been toying with the idea of a mixed chaos army for quite some time. I've wanted to field some artillery pieces in my main CSM army, so I turned to R&H to fill the gap. Very new to them in general, trying to get a feel for how they work and what makes a good unit/item/upgrade. I just went with what seemed to provide the most "bang" for the points.

As it stands, I feel like it would be a damn strong army to shift at 1850. Lots of tough, fearless, fnp bodies, lots of movement, excellent saving potential, and objective secured on damn near everything that isn't a vehicle, with the vehicles providing a solid AV12 wall and some nasty long range support.

Thanks for looking, and let me know what you think!

Any thoughts on what to sacrifice to find the points for them?

You could drop the Terminators down to a 3 man Termicide I guess if you really wanted the rhinos. That might also give you enough points for field artillery battery if you had extra points. Not the best renegade unit but for 30 points not bad.

Or you could use any extra points to give the rhinos dozer blades and combi weapons maybe.

I would also drop the termies to a 3-man unit for termicide use with either melta or plasma combi's. I'd take the extra points from that, drop the Helbrute, and grab some Autocannon Havocs. You can then use the single Autocannons in your CSM units to finish off their targets and they can move and shoot, thanks to being DG. The other nice thing is they can hunt light vehicles and leave your Rapiers to hunt the high AV or Superheavy/Gargantuan targets. Also, as stated, grab a few rhinos with what points you have left, if only to scoot around and steal objectives with ObSec.

Ok, if dropping the unit of termies down to 3, my instinct is to keep them cheap and not upgrade their melee weapons, just leave them with power axes. For the Havocs, I have been quite fond of my autocannon wielding wonders, but should they get a rhino as well?

And what's the opinion on upgrades for the renegade command squad; chimera?

Cheap is good on the Termies. Be sure to grab a combi for each, then Axes/Mauls, depending on taste/meta. If you have the points after grabbing rhino's for the CSM squads, it wouldn't hurt. You can either use it to get them in position midfield for Objective camping, followed by Autocannon hosing or just leave it empty to drive around and grab Objectives.

I've never had much luck on Renegade Command Squad upgrades. I typically just have my Demagogue jump into a tougher squad for protection. However, I've seen a lot of people toss an Autocannon in the squad since they have decent BS.

So I just couldn't find myself loving the idea of the termicide unit. With the amount of firepower already on the field, I just don't see the need for a deep strike sacrifice unit. As such, I made some changes.

Rhino's are now in the CSM squads, picked up the Havoc's w/autocannons, dropped the termies and the helbrute, picked up a unit of Chosen with Rhino, 4x flamers and 1 autocannon, and switched the raptors to melta instead of plasma.

No changes to the renegades, though I did think about getting extra crew for the Rapiers. Worth it?

I use my "termicide" units to take backfield objectives late in the game, and the DG kind are hard to shift without the proper firepower. Taking them might be a good idea, use your firepower to take out the AP2, deepstike them near an objective and go sit on it.

Also, the list is lacking antiair bad, the autocannon havocs might be able to help you there but if your opponent brings more than one flier your going to have a bad day. If there isn't a lot of flyers where you play, you should be fine, I usually pick up a quad cannon just in case

Curious, do you have FW Rapiers or did you scratchbuild/convert them? I've been wanting to get some but FW is a little pricy.

I am currently in the process of scratch building some myself. I bought some dollar store bulldozers to get tracks that were perfectly sized and have been gathering some different weapon options from other cheap toy lines. A couple magnets and they should out good for me. I'll be using mine for both Renegades and CSM.

On the question of extra crew, I always buy extra crew and militia training for Renegade Rapiers. At the cheap price, it's almost silly not to.

True, backfield objective camping is a nice bonus, but if that is the case I'd want them to be a larger unit. My meta has a proliferation of massed small arms fire, and I know for a fact 3 terminators (regardless of mark) do not last more than one round of shooting.

Death Guard are incredibly hard to shift. T5, Fearless, FNP (re-roll 1's), Relentless, 3+ armor, Stealth from any attack outside 18", AND objective secured? Hell yeah.

I'd have to disagree with you on the lack of anti-air. The havocs fill that roll very well, haven't been disappointed since I started running them for that purpose. I do agree that they can't target more than one flier a turn, to which I reply with: Rapiers. While not their main role, 3 TL lascannon shots against a flier absolutely wrecks a flier; it's very rare I don't get at least 1 hit, and there are two batteries. The only air-heavy lists I play against have three Valkyrie's and two Heldrakes, and neither has proved to be too much of a nuisance yet.

I've been using stand-ins while I fine-tune the list to see what's going to stay and what will be changed out. The forgeworld models will be used as a guide, but it is doubtful I'll purchase; don't need the SM models anyway. I have enough bits to scratch-build the main cannon and add tracks/wheels/platform, and access to an industry-grade 3D-printer if I feel frisky on a slow day at the office.

Sounds like a solid plan. Get some pic's up of your progress if you can.

I'm just not familiar enough with artillery pieces in 40k to know off-hand if they're a worthwhile investment. The militia training, yes that I'm a fan of. Oddly enough, in two games, I haven't lost a single crewman yet, but I get the feeling my opponents didn't really know what to make of them either (not exactly veteran gamers).

Artillery Lists can be brutal. ADL with waves of zombies. Make your Demagogue an ordinance tyrantand artillery become elite. My go to R&H lists include 60 zombies, 4 eeartshakers, 3 medusa siege guns, and 6 Quad mortars because they're cheap and never disappoint.

I only say the antiair thing because we have a flyrant spam guy and another who runs daemon princes, it sucks when all of your high str low ap guns can't shoot up :(

I hear ya. I've been going back and forth on the ADL the entire time I'm writing and reworking the list. It's those damn tanks...every time I go to add in the ADL, the little voice says "you know another tank is only 5 points more than the ADL...".

I had been using the IA13 ruleset for the last couple of games, and I think I used it just because it's what I had on hand. Hadn't even considered using the Vraks set.

The quad mortars have come up from a friend of mine at least once before; he swears by them as well, in that he hates playing against them with his orks.

As I'm definitely keeping the army combined (CSM+Evil IG...you just couldn't let me have my 3.5 iron warriors, could you...), I don't want to go too overboard with one side over the other. The renegades have been doing well as my long range support, and the CSM have been my supreme objective holders. They really just don't shift.

That being said I noticed a need for something massive to cover beyond the 36"; everything within 36" has become a lovely zone of death. So I'm reworking the list to see about getting something like the earthshakers in there. Considering dropping a few wyverns and making small adjustments elsewhere. Thoughts?

I only say the antiair thing because we have a flyrant spam guy and another who runs daemon princes, it sucks when all of your high str low ap guns can't shoot up :(

Very true. Flyrants are a fairly rare occurrence where I'm at; only a couple people have any nids to play, they don't bring them often, and they definitely don't spam flyrants. I've been out of the tournament scene for several years, so no real idea on what the meta actually brings these days. Do flying circuses still come up often?

I would try to get some Earthshakers in there, they can only direct fire within 36" but you can hit people on other tables if you really wanted too with the 120". Mainly its to harass backfield objective holders, so no they cant just leave a squad there uncontested. Plus instant killing a space marine squad in one shot makes my heretic heart happy

Not extremely often in my meta, but often enough for me to bring AT LEAST a quad gun to every game

That allowed me to get rid of the Mutant Rabble I was less than in love with to begin with. There are now 4 fully loaded Rapier batteries, all with extra crew and training. Wyverns were dropped down to two single vehicle units to fill the Elites requirement, and two heavy quad launchers were added in Troops. I had placed in earthshaker platforms first, but I couldn't figure out if they were treated as artillery pieces or as weapon teams (didn't see a T value listed in battlescribe while making the list), so instead went the quad launcher route.

If anyone has an answer as to how the heavy ordnance battery functions on the tabletop, it would be much appreciated.

Also, side note on modeling options: is it just me or does the forgeworld cyclops seem like the perfect size/better price-point for forming the base of the rapiers?

Cheers all, and many thanks for your help up to this point.

Two things, Wyverns and quad mortars more or less perform the same functions, taking both isn't a bad thing, but you are doubling up. Also, I believe you get 8 Troops slots with the Purge, id string those zombies into multiples of ten instead of a big blob of 1.

Heavy ordnance batteries function as artillery as far as rules are concerned, much like the Quad Mortars. Theyre T7 like the quad mortars as well

I felt the same about the mortars vs the wyverns, except that I would be able to place the mortars in more clever/hidden spots (being smaller and all). In any case, I wanted the earthshakers from the get go, and if they act like the other T7 artillery pieces, then that is just fine by me. Switched them up again, and liked the idea of dividing the zombie into two units.
