To make a long story short, built a Zone Mortalis table, but don't play 40k anymore. What other games could I use it for?

I haven't played 40k in a year, I haven't played seriously(I.e. At least a game a month) in two. Instead I've been playing Malifaux.

But in that time I had been working on a Zone Mortalis board. At this point it is unpainted and only enough to play a small size game. Today I got really nostalgic for 40kand went through the traditional stages of "Should I try to play again."

Short answer is no I can't.

Long answer:
Spoiler:

1. My friends who played are in another state. The players in my area are not as narrative driven and have lost their gaming space due to arguments with the owners.
2. A lack of satisfaction with the balance of the game. Example, my Orks could never beat my friend's Ad Mech, but my Orks always beat another friend's sisters of battle.

But I've got the board and materials around to expand it. I wanted to turn it into a Malifaux board, but it's too spacious for Malifaux. I've got Deadzone, but again the table is not suitable for it.

Are there any games out there that might be good for a Zone Mortalis board?

I'm willing to consider army, skirmish, or RPG type games. Preferably skirmish as I don't want too invest in buy too many new models. Preferably I'd like to play a game reminiscent of Aliens/Space Hulk.

Too short! I had to go search to see what Zone Mortalis meant. I haven't played 40K for several years.

The players in my area are not as narrative driven

Not altogether sure what that means either. They're not casual players? Power gamers?

And if they've lost their gaming venue, are there any other gamers or venues near to you?

This one might have possibilities. You don't have to invest in any new models. It's the reason I even hold on to some of my old 40K models.

Check out Mantic Games Deadzone.

Its a skirmish game so fairly low model count. They even have an "ork" faction called Marauders.

^^ Deadzone is also played on a 2'x2' table which is a fraction of a ZM board.

Just picked up the Rogue Stars book and it's fantastic. Seems to be exactly what you're looking for. Check it out, mine was like $13 so even if it's not your cup o tea you're not out much. The character creation rules let you point out just about anything you'd like to field.
Want a Space Marine, Han Solo and 2 Fremen on one team? Totally doable.

the table is only limited by your imagination really - you have the tools to make something happen, so get working.

I'm from the future. The future of space

For whatever you choose, are you expecting to be able to buy half of what you need to play and hope that someone else will show up with the other half?

If so, you may never see play on your table. Whatever you decide on, you'll probably have to provide both armies to go with your terrain and invite people to play. It sucks that 40k has both failed you in terms of game balance and that locally it has attracted players with issues, but when you go independent in your wargaming, you need to put in more work in terms of finding opponents. I think it's totally worth it though.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

I second Rogue Stars, it even has rules for fighting in Spaceships.

Possibly AvP when (if) the Wargame book comes out?

Rogue Stars seems like what I'm looking for. From what I can tell it has a lot more customizable aspects to it so I don't have to play in a specific setting like 40k or Deadzone.

Only thing I hope is that it's easy to play. From the limited resources online it seems like it does skirmish pretty well. I wish I knew the complete list of archetypes/templates you can use. So far I've seen Star Cops and Miners.

That has the makings of an epic rivalry right there.

Warpath firefight rather than deadzone would probably fit best for a zone Mortalis style game at full size.

Lord of the rings fighting in Moria?

Are walls etc removable? Cause... This could very well be a thing...

with the DC universe miniatures game from Knight models. You can also do Batman as well but you'd need to have people be able to climb over the walls rather than punch through them. Both games are played on a 3' by 3' so you could use most of the board.

I think infinity and frostgrave could work too. Though I don't play either games myself.

Any skirmish game will work well on it.

Frostgrave
Rogue Stars
Infinity
Rampant Stars
Imperial Assault free-form
Deadzone
Dust

etc, etc, etc.

Gotta second Warpath Firefight. Even 2k point games will be much smaller than current 2k Warhammer games. Think...3rd edition Warhammer 40k point costs?

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I played Necromunda on a home made version of the Zone Mortalis board a few years ago. It was made using foam sheet and looked quite cool I thought.

Anyway I was suprised how well Necromunda played on it as although you lost the traditional multi-level aspect it enhanced claustrophobia And brought flamers and shotguns more into the fore.
