That is some excellent brush control to do the diamond pattern to begin with. I do my checkers exactly the same way, but need a lot more corrective work, and I'd completely ruin the colour underneath.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

I find as long as i get that first line done, the rest is a lot easier because each line uses the previous one as a guide. Always a bit nervous doing that first one.
