I've been kicking around the idea of starting a necron army and finally got around to reading the latest codex in depth. I don't understand the rationale for making these two shards unique given that the backstory suggests each C'tan was broken up into multiple pieces (a bit like avatars of khaine that way). Maybe only one shard of each C'tan retained the persona of the original?

In any case, if you had an opponent that wanted to play two shards of the nightbringer but paid the extra points for one of them to be transcendent c'tan (in a decurion detachment they are both "star god" selections), would you allow it? Assume this is a casual game and not a tournament.

I think of them less as "absolutely unique in the universe" and more "sufficiently rare that you would never see more than one on any given battlefield" akin to the unique-per-army Signature Systems of the Tau.

Further, the shards attract to each other, and the Necrons are more than aware of that fact - putting two Shards of the same C'tan into the field is simply NOT DONE, due to the inherent danger that entails.

I don't know what the RAW would be for Transcendent C'tan upgrades, but while it may be somewhat unfluffy, I wouldn't deny a game so long as it was legal.

Fluff-wise, the Necrons would never unleash two of them in close proximity. Shards coalesce, become harder to control and more self-aware.

You need a Tesseract Vault to contain shards above of a certain size.

Not sure 100% what is meant by paying the points to upgrade the deciever to a trancendent, as they are different codex options, and you dont upgrade any of the to any other.

In saying that, his list is perfectly legal running the different C'tan at the same time.

I have done this before, I feel it is actually a good way to lower the 'Cron power level. I say this as my C'tan have never done much at all for me, I always roll useless powers when generating them.

I'd play a friendly game against an opponent who wanted to use more than one Nightbringer, provided he let me borrow both of them sometime so I could do the same.

I'm a big fan of theme armies and the idea behind this one is a rogue, death worshiping destroyer cult (the non-destroyer elements are recent converts maybe?). Their assembling multiple nightbringer shards together is their effort to "go pro" with this whole destroy all life thing. Just an idea I've had bouncing around in my head, competing with a speed freak army for funding.

I think he was looking to pay for a trancendant but using the rules of a nightbringer.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I personally wouldn´t allow it because the FAQ buff to the nightbringer being able to use his gaze against anything on the table ignoring combat or flight model makes it rather nasty.
