What books do you need to start?

What would you add to the forces in spite of dawn?

I haven't played fantasy in 2-3 editions but there are players in my area.

Also, when will the dwarves get some love?

You need no books. The Rules and Warscrolls for all units are available in the Age of Sigmar App.

Stormfiends and Stormvermin, maybe a Grey Seer for the Skaven. I haven't a clue for the Swifthawk Agents.

We don't know, hopefully soon.

Also, just so you know, Warhammer Fantasy Battle doesn't technically exist anymore and Age of Sigmar is a very different game. You probably already know that but you did say you were gone 2-3 editions.

You don't really need any books. Most of the rules are available for free to download on the GW website, and they also have an iOS and Android app for the rules and warscrolls for the units. Just search for "Age of Sigmar" in app store.

However, if your local group will be using matched play, you will most probably want the general's handbook, which is also available in the Age of Sigmar app. This will contain most of the additional rules for matched play, the relevant battleplans for them, and also the points cost and army building restrictions. You might also want the battletome for the army that you want to use, but that is not totally necessary.

For the high elves, a skywarden (skycutter chariot with hero on it), and maybe a few shadow warriors and more swordmasters, probably.

For the skaven, a second set from spire of dawn maybe, and a probably some stormfiends and stormvermin.

This is nothing like 6th, 7th or 8th edition WHFB as I know it. I only played 8th ed, but this is drastically different from it but is a good game, better in some regards but it's all personal subjectivity.

Dwarves had the fyreslayers a while back (basically slayers getting their own army), but regular dwarves are always on the rumour mill. They are also called Duardin now.

It is highly likely that we will see some new dwarves at the end of March. If you go to the scroll builder website you can see the points for everything. There is a new general's handbook coming in the summer, which I highly recommend getting. The grand alliance community forums have lots of useful info. Several people on there have used the spire of dawn set as a basis for a new army.

Spire of Dawn contains a copy of the rules. The only other book you'd need is the General's Handbook, but it might be worth waiting a month or two for the new version (they're going to release an updated version yearly).

I went with a Verminlord and a (previously mentioned) Skywarden with banner.

I built my seraphon army buy getting the start collecting kits and selling the carnosaur each time except the last. With discounts I payed for 1 box and ended up with 40 cav, carnosaur and 60 warriors.

No madam, 40,000 is the year that this game is set in. Not how much it costs. Though you may have a point. - GW Fulchester

Just be wary, that the General's Handbook might be replaced in the next few months. So if you buy it, it can be invalidate with the General's Handbook 2 that is being worked on.

Thing is, it can come out next month or summer, or maybe next year. If you buy a new Battletomb or codex the Diciples of Tzeench and the Sylvanth (spelling) and I believe the Stromcasts have points in them so you don't need the General's Handbook for points then.

I would say borrow a copy unless you don't mind having the book invalidated in a month (very unlikely but with 40K coming up with a new edition it would be wise to release now) or in the summer (will compete with 40K new edition) or maybe in fall (after 40K new edition has settled). Or even next year if GW really wants the new edition super balanced.(yeah right. )

So it's up to you if you want to buy the General's Handbook. How much use can you get out in a few months of it? At least it's not very expensive.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

first off, warhammer fantasy as you know it is dead. it is replaced by Ages of Sigmar.
if you want to play the old WHF then there is some fan made rules for the 9th edition somewhere else here on the forum.

as for books you need the generals hand book.
playing AoS outside of pitched point system that you find in GHB is 100% pointless whitout a ton of inhouse regulations and banns.

the old forces from WHF is now in a complete mix and match.
if you want to use your old fantasy armys there are free pdf rules for the old armies on GW`s site, but many of the models/armys are no longer prodused by GW.

basicly you want the grand alliance books to be up to speed on aos.
the battletomes are the beginnings of the new aos armies. thouse armies that dont have a battletome have not been made to aos army yet, and you will find their aos rules in the grand alliance books.

atm the only battletome for dwarfs are the fyreslayers, but regular dwarfs will apparently get some love in march.

I headed to my local Hobbytown and hit the half price section. I was going to get the Sigmar books but they are even cheaper on eBay. I got the following:

Lothern Skycutter

Screaming Bell

Thanquol and Boneripper

Hell Pitt abomination

Doom flayer team

I figures if I cant use it, Ill eBay it
