The game has come a long way in the past couple couple years that it has been being created. I have demoed this game for Weta Workshop both at PAX Prime and GenCon. Although it has miniatures, it is a board game but one that is goes fairly quickly and is a lot of fun. You choose your pilot, choose your faction and build a deck to your play style.

-------------------------------------------------------

GKR: HEAVY HITTERS! - KICKSTARTER LINK

From the miscreants at Weta Workshop and Cryptozoic comes Weta Workshop’s first tabletop game, set in the sports-crazy dystopian future of Giant Killer Robots!

Strap in for the most epic smackdown this side of the megapocalypse. Gather your squad of Giant Killer Robots (GKRs), build your deck, and face your rivals in the ultimate fight for fame, fortune, and sweet salvage rights. Scheme, strategize and strong-arm your way to victory as you dominate the media landscape, one billboard at a time.

The story goes like this...Big plague. People died. Governments fell over. Things got bad, real fast. Fortunately, the corporations saved the day! Under their command, things got a whole lot better. But what to do with all those abandoned cites? There’s money to be made in the salvage rights. But which corporation gets them? Enter the Giant Killer Robots League.

THE ROBOT RUMBLE STARTS NOW!

GKR: Heavy Hitters is a standalone, deck-building tabletop game for 2-4 players, combining high-quality collectibles with dice-rolling, card-building and tactical play! Pilot your Heavy Hitter (the biggest, baddest robot on the board) and a squad of three Support Units through the ruins of an old city, competing to either wipe your opponent off the map or reduce four skyscrapers to rubble.

KEY GAME FEATURES
  • A unique hex-based tabletop gameplay experience
  • x4 Giant high-quality Heavy Hitter miniatures up to 139mm tall
  • x12 highly detailed Support Units standing up to 47mm tall.
  • x10 Buildings that break up the landscape and alter the way you play, every time
  • x193 cards with unique artwork from Weta Workshop artists
  • Four corporate Factions, each with its own weapons and abilities
  • Four Pilots with special skills
  • Five distinct phases of play
  • Two ways to win!

  • THE FACTIONS
GKR: Heavy Hitters features four unique corporate Factions. Each has a squad of GKRs ready for you to take control, including one Heavy Hitter and three Support Units with a whole heap of special abilities. As Pilot, you get to pick one Faction to fight for. Which will you take into combat?!

$100 base + $40+ shipping to the US for a robot-themed deluxe remake of King of Toyko / Monsterpocalypse?

I put down a reminder, and I'm sure it'll go big, being WETA and all. It's just kind of a hard sell for me. The robots are nice enough, but game itself seems somewhat uninspiring.

Sort of a pity that the unpainted, unassembled set goes for more than the painted, assembled set.

I love the general theme and I love big robots, but this one is missing the mark for me for some reason. I think I just don't like the robot designs that much, I would have preferred something that looks more Pacific Rimmy.

Agreed, have described them elsewhere as 3D scribbles.

Originally I wasn't a fan just on look, the robots aren't my style. I mean I love robots, but I'm more mecha than borderland style robots. I did get drawn in by the deck building aspect, where I design my corp deck based on the pilot to suit my game style. That let me decide if I wanted to play defensively to tag or offensively or a balance. The difference in cards and changing how my deck was, did give me a different experience each games.

It is a shame that the they don't just have a "unpainted" set by itself, so if someone just wanted to go in for the miniatures only. There is always a possibility that can change as well. The campaign is going pretty strong on day 2, given historicals of similar campaigns... I expect the lull to hit in a couple weeks. What they do during that time and how long that lull happens will see what other additions and changes happen to the campaign.

The minion robots all look at least decent to me, but the big robots just look ...overdesigned and underthought? 3D scribbles kind of nails it. They just don't look like the type of robots that I'd want to see fighting monsters or aliens...and giving them two handed gundam firearms really doesn't help.

To be fair, they're Oz/NZ, so "Mad Max" / Borderlands aesthetics figure more strongly in their collective consciousness than the rest of us.

The guns are an unbelievably terrible design element, as they're carrying naval artillery cannon - they'd be able to level those buildings from miles away. Except they're being held by teeny, tiny, Trumpy hands - instead of being built into the hull like a RX-77D Guncannon or shoulder-mounted like a Metal Gear.

These things should be fitted with wrecking balls and giant crowbars, engaging in close combat.

You might have something there...I am loving the look of the big robots for their Borderlands look. Not sure I would get it as I would want to paint them myself, but will keep my eye on it.

The unpainted one is more expensive as you get both painted and unpainted minis. It has the core box plus a suite of unpainted robots. The core box has painted ones. Essentially double minis if I read it right.

That's because they aren't meant to fight monsters & aliens.

The lore of the game as far as I understand it is that in the future people have abandoned the big cities of old and so companies are fighting over the rights to demolish the cities.
Some bright spark then said "Hey, let's make this into a game show for entertainment with the prize being the demolition rights" and the government and demolition companies agreed.

They're literally (lore-wise) designed to fight each other in a game show, rather than something more important like saving humanity for external threats.

Since I first found out about this a month or two ago I've been looking forward to this. It's a shame that there isn't a boxset with just unpainted minis (rather than a set of painted and unpainted), but once I get a bit more cash I'm almost certainly going to back it.

Dunno if there is. Manchu said "Sort of a pity that the unpainted, unassembled set goes for more than the painted, assembled set." which is wrong. The $125 pledge level includes a fully painted/assembled set. The $150 includes a fully painted/asembled set, and also an unpainted set. So that statement was wrong, because the price difference is $25 for an unpainted set.

So you can't buy just the unpainted set, the only way to do so is to spend more money? Like, I see your math, it's $25 more to get the unpainted with the painted, but if there's not a way to get the unpainted otherwise, then it's actually more expensive as you have to spend more money to get it.

I don't know if you can or not, I'm not a backer. Please note my response was addressing Manchu's statement "Sort of a pity that the unpainted, unassembled set goes for more than the painted, assembled set." which is not correct. I'm not sure where the rest of this came from.

You don't need to be a backer to know.

But sure, point taken - you get the unpainted, unassembled models in addition. The rub is, there is no other way to get them at present. So that's the real pity, I guess.

I probably will, it's just that it requires more effort.
And also the pre-painted models are also meant to be pre-assembled too, which for some of the heavy hitters will make it a bit awkward to paint certain parts.

3165 backers at $404,427 currently with the next Stretch Goal at $435k for plastic dashboards. I have to admit it is going stronger than I anticipated. I'm torn with the SGs they are both things that improve the game, add to it but underwhelming for a board game with miniatures. There have been people asking just for an unpainted add-on so hopefully that picks up some traction, not just for people who just want miniatures but because I'd like to get a second set to kitbash with.
