Hoping this doesn't cross the line with regard to personal blog territory, but is I am considering growing facial hair but am concerned a goatee might look a i bit old fashioned. I'm not that keen on a full beard, so I'm open to suggestions.

Grow a full beard, then when your sick of it, turn it into a goatee, then see which one you like better.

It really depends on your face and how the hair grows. Some guys can't pull off a full beard because the hair grows patchy. If you are one of these, the goatee is for you.
I used to be exclusively goatee, but my wife likes the full beard on my, so that's what I have now.

I suggest you grow a full beard first, then see how you like it. If you don't, just save off the sides and you have a goatee.

I tend towards the sci-fi villain or Musketeer sort of look when it comes to growing a beard in general.

This is the best advice. If you are growing your beard, be sure to keep your neck clean. No neck beard. Repeat. No. Neck. Beard.

For fun advice, go with the mutt and chops. Nothing says bad ass like this woolly mess on your face:

Obviously, you should go for a soul patch instead. That I even had to remind you that was not only an option but THE option is sad.

Beards are more to my personal tastes. Goatees just make some dudes look like evil overlords.

But YMMV.

Don't forget the monocle and bowler. Very British and very awesome. But everything classically British is awesome.

It will take years to grow it out that long. In the mean time...

Whatever you do, avoid the neckbeard. Thats just wrong.

As of Chrimbo, 'can't be bothered to shave' has become 'beard'.

It's still growing in (need to let the body grow through, so it doesn't look stupid and straggly', so there is an element of neckbeard - but that's a temporary measure which I should be able to trim back either this weekend or next - whenever I can actually be bothered.

Thanks for all the replies, am going beardy for now figuring it'll be obviously easier to trim down to a goatee later rather than trying to do it the other way round. Seems a bit patchy after more than a month now (I seem to have a permanent gap about a finger-tip's width in the centre of the 'tache area, it'd make any attempt at a Hitler look more like quotation marks!) but I'll stick with it for now.

Any advice on beard/goatee maintenance appreciated though, I'm getting near 40 but I've never seriously attempted facial hair outside of lazy stubble.

If you're 6'5"+ and weighing in at least 280, go for the full beard.
If you like to wear sunglasses indoors go for the goatee.

Otherwise, shave.

It is really better suited for your personal blog and/or social media page.
