So I'm going to start painting a blood angels army. I'm mainly going to be airbrushing the red basecoat on it. Secondly, to highlight it twice with getting progressively lighter red. Finally, a sharp highlight of a bright orange. Which colors from which producer should I buy and use?

I don't really know about which paints to use from the GW/AP/Vallejo ranges, but I think you want to throw a shade in there otherwise the models are going to look very flat and strange with all those highlights but no shades.

If you're interested in how I do mine BA's, pictured here...

I start by priming the model white, preshading with blue (I use Tamiya blue) and then gradually building up a red until I like the look (I use Tamiya Flat Red, it's my favourite red for airbrushing, but you can get the same effect with other reds). I then gloss varnish it (I like Tamiya X22) wait a couple of days for the gloss to cure then apply a dark brown (almost black) oil shading. I don't do a super thin "oil wash", I just thin it down a little bit and paint it directly in to the crevices, then use a clean brush to blend out the transition, the gloss is important because it makes blending the oil paint possible, without the gloss the oil will bite in too much and you won't be able to blend it in.

Finally I just hit it with a satin varnish. I don't actually like the look of sharp edge highlights on them, but if you want an edge highlight you could add one.

I personally started off using only GW paints and then was able to get a hand on AP and Vallejo products which led me to use all three.

AP for primers and base coats, GW for shades/glazing and Vallejo for black, white and light-color highlights.

I've used many different paint schemes for my Blood Angels so far. And now my army looks like a patchwork blanket.

So by all means, play around and experiment. But at some point, you also have to settle on a method.

This method produces nice results:

Also, despite what Vallejo claim, their paints are not airbrush ready. But it only takes a little thinner and a little Flow Improver to get them going. The paint probably has to be thinner than you think.

The Vallejo airbrush primers doesn't - imho - adhere very well. But they leave a beautiful finish. I'd hit the minis with a dusting of spray can primer (the cheap-ish stuff for cars is good - Dupli Color eg.) and then follow up with Vallejo primer.

AP sprays for priming.

Vallejo paints for everything else (with a mix of random washes/metallics from various companies which I just ended up wish).

So yeah, Vallejo for most of your paints.

That Next Level Painting guy has quite a few good tricks.

Maybe check out this video too: https://youtu.be/5ZHBLxXP9vw?t=6m18s

Airbrushing red on top of a brown color can be very nice, as browns are usually good to shade red. Vallejo burnt amber is a great color for that.

So have a mix of all 3? I like GW, but thinning paints every single time is a hassle. Most Vallejo colors I have have great application. Haven't tried AP but there prices look good from other retailers. Pretty much I should get mostly vallejo paints?
