I don't like to measure if armies are "viable or not," but I'm curious if a pure Deathwing army could work. Models such as DW knights, DW terminators, Dreadnoughts, and any Dark Angels vehicles can be used.

'Could' it? Yes. Will it? As with almost any question of viability, it depends on your environment/playgroup.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

I mean the formations have good benefits, but Terminators are bad themselves.

One problem. You need CAD alongside deathwing formation or you lose by default.

Not if you use the Deathwing Strike Force and use some Venerable Dreadnoughts in Drop Pods.

Ah yes though that's expensive tax since if opponent gets to choose second turn you have to put that far out and hidden and still hope he isn't able to torch it anyway. Or take 3+ to get more and still have to do such hiding. Hiding nearby results generally in getting blown anyway and then game over.

Before straight DW was killed I used to run 1000 point DW lists. It was alright, but in no way competitive. You just have so little stuff, none of which is especially scary. DW knights might kill stuff if they ever get into melee but they spend most of the game killing unimportant stuff and chasing anything remotely fast in circles. Dreadnoughts' AV12 always fails you. Your shooting is never good, as your only useful gun is the assault cannon but it's one per five.

They're units that wants to get into melee but they're too slow to reliably get there, and there's a lot that can kill them while they do try to get close enough to stuff to charge.

The universal turn 1 DS is the only thing that made them decent, but that's gone sooooo...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh, and everyone thinks that DW knights were buffed when they were given AP3, which is nice, but what made them genuinely scary was 3 S10 AP2 (or was it AP1?) attacks at I4 apiece on the charge. Sure, once a game, so it's a bit gimmicky, but it meant your opponent would never risk getting anything near them, including their melee specialists. All of the scariest melee units in the game are terrified, you'd outright nuke a wraithknight with it.

Now you AP3 at all times but only get 1 S8 AP2 attack at I4, even on the charge. Went from 235 point unit that can guarantee death to 1 unit and still do moderate damage for the rest of the game, vs now being able to butcher tac marines and nid MCs and that's about it.
