Just had my first AoS game. First, it was great, very fun and fast paced, really hope they do something similar with it for 40k! It was a 1000 point game of Khorne vs Stormcast, and although I got my ass thoroughly whipped, I managed to kill no less than a quarter of the enemy army! My main problem was all my big units going down first, leaving the little dudes without support. Below is the list I used, I'm looking for advice on how to improve with the force, tactics involving the force etc.

Exalted Deathbringer (Impaling Spear)
Slaughterpriest (Hackblade and Wrathhammer)
Bloodsecrator

All 3 of the above I had in a blob in the centre of force, backed by Blood Warriors and left in range of the Blood Reavers.

Khorgoraths x 3
Skullcrushers x 3

Khorgoraths were on the right flank in a single unit, inches away from the heroes and Blood Warriors, while Skullcrushers were on the left flank with the Blood Reavers.

Blood Warriors x10
Blood Reavers x20 (10 meat rippers 10 reavers)

I lost all 3 Khorgoraths at the end of the 2nd turn to a barrage of Stormcast hero abilities and prosecutor hammers. They were charged by Draccoths, Celestant on Draccoth and Prosecutors and were beaten down. The single survivor managed to get a few attacks in but didn't do much good.
Blood Warriors were amazing, their No Respite rule and Gorefists really did a bunch of damage and they managed to take some Draccoths down. In my 2nd turn I deployed the Portal of Skulls giving my army battleshock immunity and one extra attack. That battleshock thing is so important, I'm going to have to use more Bloodsecrators.

Skullcrushers were next to go, they got bogged down in some terrain and couldn't get a charge off, so were charged themselves by some Retributors. 2 of the dudes went down while the survivor managed to kill a Retributor. Slaughterpriest and Deathbringer were charged by the Lord Celestant and a squad of 5 Liberators. Slaughterpriest went down, but the 2 heroes took out the Liberators and did some damage to the Celestant before they died. Bloodsecrator was the next to go after being charged by Prosecutors. The surviving Blood Warriors were picked off by what was left of the Draccoths.

Blood Reavers were still buffed by the Bloodsecrator so managed to get a bunch of attacks in dealing a lot of damage. Only 7 out of 20 were in base contact though because terrain and my own Skullcrushers were blocking them from piling in. I feel that while they performed very well, I really shot myself in the foot and they could have done so much better if more got in to attack.

The game ended with a single Bloodreaver surviving.

The list itself is not that bad though most people will tell you to ditch the Khorgoraths because their points to damage efficiency is pretty poor as is their general defense. However I use them as well because I like the models.

Khorne has several key weaknesses that make them a fairly low tier force (IMO) and you will be challenged using them:

First - they have no special allegiance rules or powers like the stormcast do, nor do they have any access to any really good artefacts.

Second - they are an army that centers around melee but whose melee units are fairly average at best, whereas the stormcast have both powerful shooting and powerful melee units that can pump out mortal wounds.

I find my blood reavers are key as I can put them near shrines and bloodsecrators to give them a lot of attacks so that they cannot be ignored.

Key strategy against khorne is simply to knock down the buffers like the shrines and the characters. Once you do that, the rest of the army falls pretty quickly.

Properly buffed Khorne can be pretty nasty, there was a largely bloodbound list at the uk masters. I think they are probably a bit steeper learning curve than stormcast though.

A bloodstoker for re-rolling 1s and bonus charge is handy and comes in the starter box

Hodge-Podge says: Run with the Devil, Shout Satan's Might. Deathtongue! Deathtongue! The Beast arises tonight!

Hi RyanAvx,

Synergy is key in AoS. As such my advice would be to try something like this:

Bloodstoker -General w/ Lord of War command trait & Chaos Talisman
Bloodsecrator
Bloodsecrator
Bloodreavers x20 1x Battleline
Blood Warriors x10 1x Battleline
Skullreapers x10

43 Models 85 Wounds 980 Points

That also allows you to roll on a Triumph table if your opponent is 1,000 points.

So within Matched Play your Bloodsecrator's ability to provide an additional attack actually stacks. Taking two is excellent at this points level as that's a great force multiplier for less points. You can also deploy one with the portal to give you immunity to battleshock if you think your going to take wounds before you get into combat (shooting) and run the other to cover a larger area on the table and bunny hop them.

I'd also advise to run the Reavers as one large unit of 20. When you come to combat activation you want to do as much damage with these guys before they die, due to their save of only "-". I'd also recommend you swap them for Khorne Marauders in bigger games, when you have other units that can have Rend on their weapon profile. -But that's a side note.

Using the combined buffs from the Secrators and the Bloodstoker your killy Skullreapers are:

Hitting on 3's and re-rolling 1's with Deamon Blades. Wounding on 3's with 6's causing mortals. Any 1's you can re-roll due to the Bloodstoker and avoid taking damage back.

That's 45 attacks total, excluding the champ.

Also keep the Meat Cleavers, the Rend is better on the Reavers.

Utilise the Blood warriors vs units like the Dracoths for defensive purposes.

Thanks,
