I loved 40k and WFB when I first started them around the release of 4th edition 40k, but I soon got fed up with some of GWs practices and fell in love with Warmachine and Hordes instead. I played WM/H and the occasional 40k for years before school got too busy and I went on a wargaming hiatus. Flashforward to now as I try to return to miniature wargaming. I find the current WM/H and PP are not the game and company that I once loved. I find that 40k's rules have become an absolute mess even as GW the company improves. I try some smaller games but either can't get into them or can't find people to play them with. It's a sad affair, but I may just become a painter even though I loved the gaming side of the hobby. It's unfortunate that so many wargamers aren't willing to try other games and so make it almost impossible to play anything but the most popular but I understand why.
I have considered giving AoS a try, but I am waiting for either new Elves or a Bretonnia-like faction to really dive in.

Ah, that's too bad. If your local game scene isn't willing to try something that's more appealing to you then being a painter until something better comes along seems to be the best solution.
Hopefully when either 8th edition 40k or new AoS elves arrive they're to your taste and all your paint-ience pays off.

I would recommend giving AoS a shot. It's dead easy to get into, but the synergy and combo style play is really fun and tactical and apparently similar to WMH in some respects.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-) |

Mantic make some good games like Kings of war etc. where the company really try to keep the prices down to keep it accessibe to as many as possible.
Never tried any of their games but i've been to their headquarters in nottingham and their a bunch of decent blokes.

X-wing is a really popular miniatures game. Could be worth trying. And 90% of the population loves Star Wars.

I feel for your situation - it can be an uphill struggle against the gaming equivalents of Keeping Up With The Kardashians or Jersey Shore. Without the ready-made playerbase and pickup games of the big, popular, sparkly games, you often need a change in attitude and approach to gaming; although I don't know what your thinking is at the mo. When you say 'try some games' and 'can't find players', what do you do to persuade them to play?

Hear hear OP.
WMH is dead around here, 40k is a dumpster fire, AoS; whilst an okayish game is preceded by nothing short of cultural vandalism so I'm not touching it.
Only games played round here are Bolt Action, X wing, BB and Dropzone. None of which interest me for various reasons.

I have heard good things about SAGA and Frostgrave.
To an outsider like me that's not played either, they seem reasonably similar to Warmahordes in that they're skirmish games with a hero-focus (Frostgrave moreso than SAGA I presume) so they might fill that void for you.
Suitable models for those games are a lot cheaper than PP's offerings too, and look a lot better IMO.

I've seen Frostgrave and it looks pretty neat. So you could try it.

Saga, Frostgrave, and Kings of War are all great games/systems and low cost/maintenance in terms of investment over time. Rules for all are pretty straight forward and easy to learn - but like you said the challenge is finding the players into trying them (1) and (2) ultimately following suit and buying in.

If you are having a hard time getting people to try new games, I propose that you need to provide everythign for a game. Gamers are more likely to try if there is zero of their own investment.
So, if you want to try Frostgrave you will want to paint up two warbands and some undead wandering monsters, get a 3x3 matt, and make the necessary terrain. Only then do I find that otehr, risk averse players, will give it a shot. You have essentially eliminated the risk for them.

Yeah the hardest part in my area is it's basicaly GW or PP, and that's it. There are some people who play KoW, but other than that no other games go on. Even if I wanted to use Frostgrave or Saga, nobody around here knows or gives a crap about those games. I guess there's X-wing too but I have no interest in that.

Another vote for Frostgrave here. I'm not much into fantasy, but Frsotgrave is a nice, relaxed game with a simple system. Sure, you can't manage your warband as if you were playing Starfleet Battles... but that's why I like it. You can even print a few houses and ruins on cardstock, make sure they pile into a neat box even when assembled, and you have a ready-made game for demos anywhere you can carry a cardboard box to.
Edited for keyboard issues.
