UPDATE:

If anyones interested I changed up my yellow formula quite a lot since the tac squad.

The Captain and Dread is as follows:

Grey Primer
Base: Averland sunsent through an airbrush
Layer: Vallejo Game colour Gold Yellow through an airbrush
Pin Wash: Seraphim Sepia
Highlight: 1 part VGC Gold Yellow and 1 Part VGC Dead White
Highlight 2: Dorn Yellow

For the Razorback I followed the Averland with a layer of white on the raised areas for a pre highlight. I feel this results in a much cleaner and vibrant yellow and the averland in the recesses provides a shade and also has the advantage of having better coverage so less of that horrible green tinge in the hard to get to places.

In person they look a noticable shade brighter to the tactical marines but only when placed right next to each other.

Also if anyones interested in trying the toned down method I used on the tacticals I spoke to another member of the army painter team at warhammer fest. He used about 50/50 averland sunset and yriel yellow to avoid the overly bright yellow. He used a soft make up brush to get a less scratchy and even finish when painting by hand.

OP:

So I have finally finished my first 10 man tac squad for my "new" Imperial Fists army. I say "new" cus it's taken me 4 months just do 10 men. Let me know what you guys think.

Very crisp and clean. Excellent work.

"Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls. The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does. That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

That is some top notch work there mister. Very smooth yellow. I love the restrained approach to the grime and dirt.

Would you care to share you yellow formula?

Couldn't agree more, superb work. +1 for the formula of your amazing yellow please!

To reiterate others - really clean and sharp. No wonder it took you 4 months! Every little detail - the plasma coil, the small armour panels on the arms etc - all just so well defined.

A great job. Even if I could paint that well, I couldn't go to that level on a Tactical squad

Dark Angels/Deathwing - just getting started!
Space Marines - Stark Crusaders 4500pts/PL244 (2700pts painted)
Eldar - Biel Tan 2000pts

Thanks everyone for the kind words . I set out to imitate the scheme of the eavy metal Imperial Fists that crop up in some of the rule books like this one:

Spoiler:

I got the idea for my base yellow from a GW painter who had his brilliant IFs on display at the warhammer 40k open day at WHW last year. I think the aim was to achieve something like the old citadel Golden Yellow.

Anyways... my formula on the yellow is mostly mixes:

Primer: vallejo grey primer
Base: 2x Yriel Yellow + 1x Averland sunset through an airbrush
Pin Wash: Agrax earthsade + Rinox hide tint
Highlight: 4x Yriel Yellow + 1x screaming skull
Extreme Highlight: 1x Yriel Yellow + 3x screaming skull

Word of warning I did hit a snag when it came to airbrushing with the base colour mix as I used standard gw paints thinned down. It seems to be quite bitty and blocks the brush often. So Im currently searching for an alternative thats similar but better to use. If anyone has any ideas it would be really helpful.

I think the more important thing to achieve the look I got was using a blend of yellow with a creamy colour for highlighting. I noticed a lot of tutorials including GW seem to go straight to ushabti bone but I think its way too stark.

@JamesY: Cheers mate and I did thanks. Had to use a new sheet with a different varnish but got there in the end

Fantastic work. As good as anything I have seen.

But if you ever want to get an army on the table, putting that kind of effort into each tactical squad will make for a daunting task!

You should be proud. They look amazing.

Cool, thanks for the formula. I don't use an airbrush yet myself but I know that Citadel do airbrush specific paints along side the normal colours. I have no idea if the airbrush specific paints cover the whole range though.

Thank you very much. I think Ill have to show some restraint with the rank and file from now on as Ill be at it forever and a day haha. But I felt it was s good exercise in seeing what I can achieve and then figure out where I can cut corners and be realistic. The most time consuming parts were blocking in the other colours which was made difficult by the fully assembled model so Im going to look into doing them in parts. Also when it came to the first highlight I went a bit overboard and did areas I didnt need to. Figuring out how to do that will probably be tougher than going the full hog haha

No problem . I recommend using dropper bottles to mix large quantities of each colour so that you dont have to mix em every time.

Ah yea I looked into that but they only do averland sunset in the airbrush range. Im gonna look into trying Vallejos gold yellow on its own and mixing it with airbrush averland too. Neither will be an exact match but Im better off doing it now rather than after Ive done 500pts worth.

I agree with the others, it's a fantastic and sharp paint job. Your yellow has the perfect amount of warmth while not being too bright.

On the airbrushing discussion: what are you thinning your paints with? Sometimes a flow improver (vallejo's airbrush flow improver, or even liquitex flow aid) can help a lot when you have paints that clog the airbrush quickly.

Glad you said that as thats what I was aiming for .

Im using vallejo airbrush thinner and Ive recently bought liquitex slo dri. The problem is actual grit in the paint. Ive tried to filter it using some very fine mesh but even then it still blocks.
