So,i was looking at my new traitor legion book and I decided i'm going to start a thousand sons army. The one thing i noticed is the lack of anti-tank and of board presence. My question is could you run the Grand Coven detachment as your main detachment, and a CAD of chaos space marines?

Here is just a list I threw together:

War cabal:
1 exalted sorcerer-160 pts
1 sorcerer mastery, level 2, mark of Tzeentch-100pts
1 5-man group of rubric marines,melta bombs,rhino-190pts
1 5-man group of scarab occult terminators,soulreaper cannon,hellfyre misslerack-300pts
Lord of the legion:Ahriman-230pts
Deamon engines:1 hellbrute, twinlinked lascannon, heavy flamer-145pts

(CAD)
HQ:1 chaos lord with terminator armour, combi-melta, lighting claw-117pts
Troops: 2 10-man chaos space marine squads with 2 meltas in rhinos-390pts
Heavy support: 1 3-man obliterator group-210pts

Yes, you can build your army using any number and combination of Detachments (except for detachments with particular restrictions, like Allied Detachments {p122} and Formations using Unique models).

This is legal, but I'd think about running the CAD Iron Warriors so you can take obliterators as troops and not spend the points on the chaos marines.

This. Alternatively you could go Cult of Destruction (1 Warp Smith and 3-5 Units of Obliterators) and roll with whatever Mark you want.

The Warp Smith costs about the same and is similarily equipped as the Lord, allows recovery of your vehicle, allows dropping terrain cover saves, and doubling fire of a unit of Obliterators. All this while still saving the points from the troop choice (more unmarked Oblits or pays for marks on the Oblits).

Third options is a IW Sorcerer for more WC and Oblit troops.

For me personally I roll Tzeentch for the improved Invuln and Tzeentch love/fluff, but many Nurgle for that toughness/FnP.

2 10 man marine squads in rhinos are not going to help you with anti tank, melta or not. The IW suggestion is a great one but as a 1kson player you should be looking into heretech disp for your anti tank.
