Hello,

Rocket Pig games is looking for a miniature painter to paint our epic sized 3d printed miniatures.
While we cannot pay for commission work at this time, what we are offering in exchange for services is:
3d printed miniatures/copies of all/any painted jobs you complete.
Free advertisement at our booth at our GenCon 50 this summer.
We will display your business cards (assuming you offer your painting services to the general public).
Advertise your name/company clearly as the artist/painter of our miniatures.
We will pay for ALL shipping (to and from) for the miniature exchanges.
As we are a very new family business this is our only option available.

For an idea of the miniature type you will be painting please refer to our KS page:

We are also already working on the miniatures for our second KS project that will also be on display at GenCon this year as well.

Please feel free to email me at wisdomknight777@hotmail.com if you are interested and/or have any questions regarding this job.

Ugh, just pay your artists something. You can arrange a lower fee or future payments if you have a decent record.

Or not.

While I certainly wouldn't recommend approaching individual artists and asking them to work for 'exposure' (because that's a great way to get yourself injured in the hurty bits). there's nothing wrong with putting out this sort of blanket 'anyone want to do some work for free stuff' request... because there are plenty of hobbyists out there who are willing to work for free stuff and a bit of exposure. I've done it myself in the past.

Of course, the company offering such a setup obviously needs to keep in mind that applicants are likely to be variable in quality. The old adage that 'you get what you pay for' isn't always strictly true, but offering peanuts does often get you monkeys.

I've paid everyone that's ever worked with me, including hobbyists.

If you haven't then that's a failure of your own business ethics, rather than a failure of a system.

This kind of post is literally asking to work for exposure. Best to offer pay, but state up front that you have little, then negotiate.

Exposure, in this day and age, in this tiny niche market, is not worth much at all.

$54k from a KS plus they offer other services.

They advertise having sound booths! doing voice overs, writing and consultancy (sic). And 2!!! 3d printers!

Someone will probably do this and good luck to them, full time artists/painters maybe looking elsewhere.

Spoiler:

Not to be too blunt, but with 54 thousand dollars, you can afford someone to do work for you. Treat for-hire artists with some goddamn respect.

You misunderstood... The only person I ever would have been paying is myself.

But I have quite happily carried out work for other companies in the past for nothing more than some freebies and the shiny feeling that I've contributed to getting a new starter off the ground.

I like freebies.

Goodness gracious, currant12.

Heck... at OP, shoot me a PM... I'll consider doing it for trade. I'm not a "pro" but I paint... and do so quickly. I have done one commission and that was for beers. I MIGHT do it.... depending on your expectations, quantity, and timeline.

My one commission example is below for my level of painting. You may also check my gallery. If you want true quality, you will have to pay a pro (not me obviously). As with all things:

YOU MAY CHOOSE ANY TWO OF THE FOLLOWING:
A.) High Quality
B.) Fast Work
C.) Cheap

Given the number of creative people within Rocket Pig, and the companies manifesto for 'Always giving back, no matter the financial situation' I'd like to think that rather than being malicious exploitation, that it's nothing more than incompetence where they've failed to budget for the cost of making their product more presentable, and doubly failed to keep enough money in reserve to cover unexpected costs.

Offering some product does go toward offsetting the whole paying with exposure thing, but it'd need to be a decent amount of prints (the normal value of commissioned painting work, for example) or custom sculpting work.

Tied and gagged in the back of your car

Exposure kills, pay your workers.

To put it another way, if your company is so irrelevant and mismanaged that you can't even afford to pay the people who will be responsible for your image, in what fething world is any sort of 'exposure' that you offer going to be remotely relevant?
