Howdy all, first time poster new to the genre looking for tips/guidance.

I'm painting this reaper MINIature scary lookin dude (the picture is not of my own work just one I grabbed from the interweb) , hes going to be fixed to a 40mm base covered in some rocks (cork), sand/gravel, green/stuff and water affects to be turned into lava, but I'm still working on all that.

My inspiration piece had some cool miniature broken pillars affixed to it, and a tombstone which I probably wont have space for. I had this idea to add some skeleton bits, ideally an arm or half a body kinda of coming out of the lava reaching for the feet of the main dude. Would also like to maybe put a skull or two laying around (I found a website that sells a "sack o skulls" anyone have experience with that?)

So my main question would be, where do you all get your "bits" or "conversion" stuffs to add to your bases? I'm not adept enough just yet to make stuff out of the modeling putty, but I have this desire to have access to as many things to add to the base as possible and was hoping there was maybe a website I havent found yet that sells just that? To me the base is half the fun, or maybe more haha. Thanks in advance for any pointers or tips.

Find a local crafts shop, should have something in there. Even better if you find a store that sells stuff for miniature railroads, they should have all sort of grasses and bushes and whole bunch of other stuff (like bags of toothpicks or matches etc.). Sand and small stones you can get from the yard. I myself use dried up birch bark that I've collected myself.

For the more grim darky stuff I guess you need to go for the webstore or if you have some leftover bits from other miniatures just raid those.

You probably already knew these but hopefully it was helpful.

Thank you for the response. Upon further investigation there is a sticky thread at the top I overlooked which goes into massive detail regarding places to shop for basing bits so I will spend some time sifting through that info and should be good to go.

Find a local model railway shop, they have a lot of very useful stuff like gravel, scatter and dust. And also a plethora of scenic stuff like cork and plasti card sheets and shapes.
