Hey, me and my friends play casual 1000 point games at the moment. We are inexperienced players and just starting to get into 40k. I say casual but we enjoy being competitive and really trying to win!
I play Eldar vs Necrons a lot and I generally win. But my friend has recently started taking 2 ghost arks and we just discovered they always fire at the full range of their salvo profile! This is a massive problem for me because I can barely get the arks killed before they're on top of me. If they are shooting full range salvo weapons AND the warriors inside are shooting it's really nasty.
- At 1000 points, what's a good way to deal with an armour heavy Necron list?
- I won't field a wraithknight, it's too anti-fun for our group.
- I would like to use fire dragons but not sure the best way. If they go and blow up a Ghost Ark, the warriors will just come out and kill them which is a terrible trade.
- Previous games I've been fielding a Falcon with a bright lance and a Guardian squad with a bright lance to try pop the shields. I'll then follow up with scatter bikes to glance it down.
- The bright lance combo worked well but that was only against ONE Ghost ark. He now takes 2 and they have way more dakka than we thought.
TL;DR - How to deal with 2 Ghost Arks charging up the board into my face at 1k points.
Guardian's, Vypers and War Walkers can bring bright lances/EML (Black Guardian varieties from Fracture of Beil Tain can even pop up behind them to bypass the quantum shielding) Wraithguard with their D-weapons can easily remove vehicles (Will have similar issues to Fire dragons though) Crimson Hunter/Hemlock Wraithfighters can also devastate vehicles- (Have to start in reserve and are fragile, but very good firepower) Dark Reapers with the St 8 Missile upgrade can also get through, and have a larger range than any Necron weapon except the Doomsday Ark (And they ignore jink which is an added bonus) Falcons and Fire Prisms also have access to weapons that can get through them Vaul's Wrath Support batteries can bring either D-cannons or Vibro Cannons to get through as well (Vibro cannons are cheaper and have better range, but need a full unit to get the most out of them)

Thanks mate, I like the idea of the deep striking black guardians.
I find the formations and stuff really confusing for 40k. Can I run a normal Eldar army like 1 HQ and 2 Troops and have an Ulthwe Strike Force at the same time?
What does your friend usually play? Does he run a Decurion or a CAD?
I play necrons all the time so I could tell you my thoughts on the necrons weaknesses (mostly CC).
Ghost Ark have Quantum Shielding meaning their armour is 13 but if glanced or penetrated it goes to 11 so just get some units with 5+ Strength or D weapons and after a while you will destroy it (flamers do most damage as its open topped so the units get hit as well).
Could always use psyke powers as necrons have nothing to prevent pysk powers so its a free turn to do more damage.
He just runs CAD, we both agree that the Decurion and Wraithknight are banned, they kinda ruin the games.
It's very hard to kill the 2 Arks before they get too close. Once they are close the Necron weapons just tear through Eldar. I think the answer is to try access the rear armour and have jetbikes or templates ready for the warriors coming out.
Yeah a Decurion is pretty ridiculous, especially if its a friendly game. However, if you play Formations you can still do a Reclamation Legion without the 4+.
Best way to destroy warriors is using blast weapon, preferably large blast as they are a blob unit so getting rid as much as possible with as few weapons as possible is the best course of action. Flame weapons work wonders as well.
the back of tbe ark is armour 11 so you still want to be shooting with strength 8+/D to go constant damage.
Ask your friend to use the Retribution Phalanx formation. Its Formation power is cheesy but very fun to play with/against
The best idea is high str low ap weaponry, as GA are open topped they will blow up if you get a pen through with an AP2 weapon on a 5+, 4+ if ap1 as you add an extra +1 for the open topped. Not sure what the eldar have besides the massed D they can bring.
The Str 8 missiles on the Dark Reapers sounds juicy if they ignore jink, while having the range to stay in relative safety. GA's are good as they can drive up the board in a perma-jinked state and still let everyone shoot all the time (the bulk of the firepower).

Its good yes, but it still has the same problems as a Necron army has. And are easily exploited, you dont really need to kill a lot for necrons to crumble with the Decrion . Kill the Troops and any Long range weapons and you should be fine. The Wraiths are the only OP thing and just kill the spider 1st before trying to kill the wraiths (they are easy to kill without the Spider)
Some other tips:
Force your opponent to out position single units to over kill them (Make sure to kill full units)
Force them to play long ways
Target Priority is key. If they have a Troop/Ghost Ark in the back ignore it for as long as you can and focus what is close.
If they have 1 or 2 Long range heavy units for Long range (Forget the name? DoomsArk?) You can easily move into a position it cant shoot and force it to move.
Eldar can just out range them all game and have D-scythes as back up for the Open-top or for Wraiths.
WK's with D-cannons
Psychic
Artillery (Yes eldar can use it lol XD)
Any Long ranger S8+ (bright lance, EML etc..)
FW-Units Lynx
Warp Hunters
